How to set up an outdoor hot tub

Updated: October 2026

The tub is in the garden and the pump is still in the box. How to set up an outdoor hot tub, for these inflatables, is ground, air, water and a socket, not a model ranking. Level slabs, a fill line, the cover on while it heats, and the manufacturer's lead straight into an RCD socket are the whole job. A same-day soak is the usual disappointment. Which listing to buy sits on the [outdoor hot tub comparison](/hub/steam-baths/outdoor-hot-tub). Lay-Z-Spa's setup notes and these nine listings were read on 19 October 2026. We did not fill a tub. Put it on ground that stays level once the water is in

Choose the spot before you inflate. Water is about 1 kg per litre. Lay-Z-Spa quotes 696 kg filled for the Miami, a different 2–4 person model, so use that only as a picture of the load, not as the Aruba's 26.3 kg empty weight. An EASE.ZONE is 29 kg empty with an outside of about 2.08 m. Three SENODON listings print 27 kg and item dimensions of 66 × 58 × 38 cm, which is the parcel, not the circle you are about to make. Argos's inflatable guide says not grass and not loose gravel. The Aruba does not name a ground cloth. One SENODON title and the £730.99 generic do.

Inflate, close the drain, fill to the line

Inflate in place. Dragging a half-filled liner across paving is how a new tub picks up a hole. Several pages say assembly required is No, including the EASE.ZONE and the SENODON files. That field means you are not bolting a cabinet. The EASE.ZONE listing still says the built-in pump inflates the tub. The Aruba field says Yes, and a UK reviewer used a video because the printed instructions were poor. Close the drain, then fill to the line on the wall, not to the rim. The £745.99 listing's low-water heating claim is one ASIN, not permission to run every pump half empty. Put the cover on before the long heat.

How long the first heat actually takes

Plan on overnight in colder months, not a soak after tea, unless the listing prints a rate. Lay-Z-Spa's winter note, for that brand's pumps, says about 1.5–2 °C per hour and at least 24 hours from cold. The Aruba page does not print watts. If the water starts near 10 °C and you want about 38 °C, even 2 °C per hour is most of a day, and the cover stays on. The EASE.ZONE prints a 1200 W heater and a rise of 0.5 / 1 °C/h. Both numbers are on the page. No other ASIN here prints a rate. A 40-minute bubble stop on the £745.99 file does not mean the heater has finished.

The socket, and the job you hand to an electrician

Plug the manufacturer's lead into a socket that already has a 30 mA RCD of the type the maker specifies. Lay-Z-Spa says never an extension lead, and quotes a 7 m cable for that brand. A lead left on a reel heats under a continuous load. If the lead cannot reach, move the tub or have an outdoor point fitted. Wiring Matters treats an isolator about 2 m from the water's edge as best practice on a fixed supply. None of these nine listings states a BS 1363 plug. A new circuit in England is notifiable under Part P. Winter packing is on outdoor hot tub in winter. Seat clashes are in the buying guide.

Common questions

What ground is acceptable?
Paving, a sound patio or a deck rated for the filled weight, checked with a level. Grass and loose gravel sink once the water is in. Lay-Z-Spa's 696 kg example is the Miami, not a measured Aruba. If a spirit level will not read true, it is the wrong spot.
Do I inflate before or after I move it?
Inflate where it will stay. Carry the dry tub, then run the pump. A half-inflated shell dragged over a patio edge is a puncture before the first fill. Assembly required: no does not mean you can roll it into place full of air.
Can the lead go on a reel or an extension?
No. Use the lead that came with the pump, unwound, in an RCD socket it can reach. Lay-Z-Spa states that ban and a 7 m cable. A coiled reel under a heater is a heat problem. If you cannot reach, stop and have a socket fitted.
How full is full?
Full is the fill line on that tub, with the drain already closed. It is not the top of the wall. Overfilling floods when someone sits down. Underfilling can leave a heater or a jet mouth out of the water. One low-water sentence does not reset the line on the other eight.
How long until 40 °C, honestly?
For a Lay-Z-Spa pump the brand's colder-month note is about 1.5–2 °C per hour and at least 24 hours from cold. The Aruba page does not print its own watts. The EASE.ZONE prints 0.5 / 1 °C/h at 1200 W, a pair of rates, both slow. Fill the day before if the soak is dated.
When do I fit the cover?
As soon as the water is at the line and the pump is circulating, and leave it on through the heat. Straps, if supplied, stop the wind lifting it. The cover is not a winter freeze system. Only one listing here names Freeze Shield.
