Best hammer tacker

Updated: 21 October 2026

You want a shortlist. The best hammer tacker in this set is the one whose staple system, leg length and box contents match the job. Stars are a second check. The [hammer stapler comparison](/hub/staplers-and-nail-guns/hammer-stapler) holds all seven amazon.co.uk listings, from the Tacwise A19 at about £12.20 to the 1783 bundle at about £49.95. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Peter F. recorded the prices and staple ranges from those listings. We did not run a lab test, so best here means a strong fit for a stated job, with a reason to skip the others.

Best for roofing and membrane

Felt and breathable membrane in UK trade articles usually call for Type 140 flat-wire staples. If the schedule allows 6–10 mm, the Tacwise 0322 A11 at about £21.99 is the gun-only buy: 4.6 from 1,000 reviews, a magazine of about 150, about 0.9 kg, and a three-year warranty line. Staples are not in the box. It does not fire nails. If the longer leg is 12 mm, the Tacwise A54 1173 is the only Type 140 gun here that states 6–12 mm, at about £31.16, with 4.3 from 415 reviews and a one-year warranty line. Pay the difference for the extra 2 mm. The 1783 bundle is 60,000 staples at 10 mm for about £49.95. Use it only after you have checked that 10 mm is long enough. Spacing and stainless versus galvanised sit on the hammer stapler for roofing felt page. The A19 is not a roofing pick.

Best for carpet underlay

Underlay splits on the staple you already own. The Stanley HT150 at about £27.81 shows 4.4 from 1,081 reviews. It fires Type-G only, at 6–10 mm, loads two sticks, and weighs about 449 g. Staples are not included. It is the strong fit when TRA705T, TRA706T or TRA708T is what the merchant sells you. The bullets stop at 10 mm, so a 12 mm stick is the wrong upgrade. The 0322 is the other underlay candidate when the counter stocks Type 140. It is heavier, at about 0.9 kg. If you switch between the two, you keep two drawers of staples. There is no hybrid in this table. Leave the A19: the 3.0 from 85 reviews includes breakage on underlay. The hammer stapler buying guide sets that order before any of these names.

Best kit and best budget

The Tacwise 1793 ECO at about £23.01 is the best value row if the box has to contain fasteners. It shows 4.5 from 93 reviews. The box has 500 Type 140 staples, 500 Type 180 10 mm nails and a remover. The nails are brads. They will not stand in for a coil nailer. You are buying the kit, not the deepest comment history. The 1783 at about £49.95 is the bulk checkout: 60,000 Type 140 staples at 10 mm. Skip it when you already hold 140/8 or 140/10, or when the job needs 12 mm. The budget craft gun is the A19 at about £12.20, Type 13 or 53, about 0.4 kg. Posters and light sheet match the bullets. A full room of underlay does not.

What to skip

Skip the OX Pro until the manual confirms the flat-wire code. The listing says 6–14 mm, bottom load, and 3.9 from 160 reviews. Moulded size marks have not matched the staples that ran. Do not put Type 140 sticks in it on a guess. Skip 12 mm staples in the HT150 and in every Type 140 gun except the A54. Those mismatches are set out on hammer stapler staple types.

Common questions

What is the best hammer tacker for roofing felt in this table?
For Type 140 at 6–10 mm, the Tacwise 0322 at about £21.99 is the gun-only fit, with 4.6 from 1,000 reviews and staples sold separately. For a 12 mm Type 140 leg, the A54 at about £31.16 is the only listing that states that length. The 1783 can supply 10 mm staples in bulk if that length is what the felt allows. The A19 is not the roofing row. None of this replaces the membrane maker’s fixing schedule.
Which gun if I already use Stanley TRA706T staples?
The Stanley HT150. TRA706T is a Type-G staple, and the HT150 bullets name TRA705T, TRA706T and TRA708T at 6–10 mm. It is about £27.81, staples not included, with 4.4 from 1,081 reviews. A Tacwise A11 will not run that stick. Stay at 10 mm or shorter. A 12 mm Type-G buy is a known miss on this listing even though some other pages mention 12 mm.
What is the best starter kit under £30?
The Tacwise 1793 at about £23.01. You get the hammer tacker, 500 staples, 500 Type 180 10 mm nails and a remover, with 4.5 from 93 reviews. The 0322 is cheaper at about £21.99 and does not include staples. Check the leg length on the 1793 staple pack before you use it on felt or underlay. The nails are not roofing nails.
Is the 1783 bundle worth it?
It is worth it when you will fire a large number of Type 140 staples at 10 mm and you want them in one checkout at about £49.95. The gun side matches the 6–10 mm A11 family, with 4.6 from 72 reviews. It is poor value if the job needs 12 mm, because those 60,000 staples are 10 mm. In that case the A54 plus a separate box of 12 mm staples is the cleaner spend.
Should I avoid the A19 for underlay?
Yes, if the underlay job is more than a small patch. The A19 is about £12.20, Type 13 or 53, about 0.4 kg, and 3.0 from 85 reviews, with breakage and jamming described on underlay. Use the HT150 or a Type 140 gun for a floor, depending on which staple you can buy. The A19 still has a place for light sheet and craft.
Is the OX Pro competitive at £24?
On price it sits with the entry Type 140 guns, at about £24.00 against about £21.99 for the 0322 and about £23.01 for the 1793. On evidence it is the one to pause on. The 6–14 mm claim is only useful after the manual names the flat wire, and 160 reviews at 3.9 include staple-label complaints. Competitive for a buyer who has already matched that wire. Not a substitute for a Type 140 A11.
