Choosing a welding table for a garage

Updated: 18 October 2026

In a single garage, the largest top you can buy is rarely the right start. The car, the doorway, the stored footprint, the floor and the air all compete with the welding table. A useful welding table for a garage must reach its working position, stay stable, and leave a plan for fume and sparks. The [welding table comparison](/hub/soldering-and-welding/welding-table) includes folding benches, a fixture top, a long platform and heavier complete tables. This page maps those types onto a shared UK garage. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Decide between a shared bay and a permanent corner

First decide whether the car returns after every session. In a shared bay, stored size and the route to storage outweigh a slightly larger top. A folding frame that clears in a few minutes is useful. A table that needs two people, or a new stack of parts against the wall, will soon be left in the way. A permanent welding corner changes the calculation. You can fix a tabletop to a bench you already own, or consider the complete 1,200 × 600 mm Nukeson frame. That top is stated at 5 mm, with height from 880 to 960 mm before wheels, and the listing does not publish a hole system. If repeated fixture work is the aim, a documented 16 mm grid may use that corner better than this amazon set. Mark working and stored rectangles on the floor with tape. Add room for your body, the torch lead, the return lead, clamps and the workpiece hanging past the top. Then open the garage door, the internal door and the car door. A 600 mm-wide table can still block the bay when a metre-long frame overhangs it. The surface trade-off is on the folding bench or fixture table page.

Compare weight, wheels and stored behaviour

The lightest product in this set is the 6.83 kg YESWELDER three-panel tray. It is easy to carry. Its seller-stated load is only about 30 kg, and its hole system is not published. It suits light portable work, not the garage's main fabrication bench. OLBRUS weighs 18.2 kg and folds around a 33.4 × 23.8 inch perforated top. The amazon.co.uk listing shows 4.6 from 43 reviews, which makes it the more evidence-backed fold-away bench here. Its 2.6 inch pitch is not a standard 50 mm grid. Techigher, GarveeMore and Koioplie are each listed around 23 kg, with combinations of wheels, tilt and height adjustment, and with conflicting loads or variants. Lidzopas and London Boutique are each listed at 27.1 kg. That is movable on castors across a smooth floor, and awkward to lift over a threshold. The Lidzopas listing also conflicts over whether two or four castors lock. MoPei is a 36 × 140 cm folding platform with height from 70 to 110 cm. One UK reviewer says it folded into a car boot. Another says it could slide open in transport because it lacked a lock. A folding claim needs two follow-ups: how small it becomes, and what keeps it closed.

Check the doorway, route and floor

Measure the narrowest part of the route, not only the garage opening. Internal doors, turns around shelving, steps and protruding handles can stop a welded frame that looked modest on the product page. UK specialist maker BPT notes that flat-pack parts can pass a normal doorway while a large assembled table may not. Its 2,400 mm Model L is around 400 kg, a different handling class from these courier-sized listings. Flat pack helps only before assembly. If the permanent table cannot leave in one piece, decide whether that is acceptable before you weld tabs or fix the top. The MegaMaxx TIG top is meant to be assembled and welded. The Nukeson uses a welded top with flat-packed legs. Plan the removal route as well as delivery. A sloping slab makes castor stability and levelling harder. Cracks or a suspended floor deserve a competent look before a very heavy table goes in. The table, the workpiece, the tooling and the leg loads all reach the floor together. Around 900 mm is a common maker reference for standing work, not a universal height. Adjustable models such as GarveeMore or MoPei help in a shared space, and every pin must be locked before you strike an arc.

Treat air in a closed garage as a separate system

A welding table does not control welding fume. HSE guidance says indoor welding fume should be controlled, commonly with effective local exhaust ventilation at source, and respiratory protective equipment may also be needed. An open garage door can support general air movement. It is not a designed substitute for capturing the plume near the weld. Do not weld with the door shut simply to keep the noise in or the heat in. A small room can put fume through your breathing zone before it drifts towards the opening. Shielding gases also introduce an asphyxiation risk in poorly ventilated or low spaces. The process, the consumable, the duration and the room layout decide the control, not the size of the top. Keep extraction and ducting out of the spark path and follow the maker's instructions. If you cannot establish adequate control, stop and get competent occupational-hygiene or LEV advice rather than inventing an air-change figure. Occasional home use does not make the health evidence disappear. Capture fume close to the work, keep clean replacement air available, and stand so the plume does not cross your face.

Keep sparks away from the car and storage

Move the car out before hot work and clear cardboard, paint, aerosols, fuel, oily rags and wood dust from the spark path. Covering a car that stays nearby is not the same as removing it. Hot particles can reach gaps, mark paint and lodge in hidden trim. Perforations, slots and removable plasma bars are meant to let material fall below the top. Inspect the other side of nearby partitions and the area under shelving. HSE advises a fire watch for at least 30 minutes after hot work, and 60 minutes where a smoulder could stay hidden. The return clamp, surface preparation and the post-weld checks are in how to set up a welding table. A fold-away table earns its space only if storage is also safe. Let hot steel cool, remove debris and dry a bare top before you fold it against a wall. Secure the folded frame so a child, a pet or the car cannot knock it over, and keep oils and anti-spatter away from ignition sources.

Common questions

Will a welding table fit through a garage door?
Usually the garage opening is not the limit. An internal doorway, a turn or a shelf may be narrower. Measure the whole route, including wheels, handles and packaging. Flat-pack parts can enter spaces that the assembled welded frame cannot later leave.
Can I fold the table and park the car?
Yes, if the stored dimensions leave safe clearance and the folded frame stays locked closed. Mark the stored footprint before you buy. Let the table cool, remove projecting clamps and secure it against tipping before the car comes back.
How heavy are these amazon welding tables?
Published weights in this set run from 6.83 kg for the YESWELDER tray to 27.1 kg for Lidzopas and London Boutique. Several folding benches are around 18 to 23 kg. Some heavier complete listings do not publish a weight, so do not assume one person can carry them.
Can I weld in a garage with the door shut?
A shut door is not a fume-control plan. Indoor welding needs suitable control for the process, commonly local exhaust ventilation at source, with respiratory protection where required. Follow HSE guidance and get competent advice if you cannot show that the plume is captured.
What working height should I choose?
Around 900 mm is a common maker reference for standing work, not a universal answer. Include the workpiece thickness and your welding posture. An adjustable frame can help, but every pin, screw and castor must be fully secured before you strike an arc.
Is a suspended garage floor a problem?
It can be, particularly with a heavy table, a workpiece and concentrated leg loads. The seller's capacity describes the table, not the building. If the floor construction or the allowable loading is uncertain, ask a competent building professional before you install a permanent heavy fixture table.
