Welding table buying guide for UK workshops

Updated: 18 October 2026

You can search for a welding table and find four different tools under the same name: a folding bench, a perforated fixture surface, a lightweight spark tray and a plasma-cutting stand. This welding table buying guide separates those jobs before you compare headline loads. Start with the [welding table comparison](/hub/soldering-and-welding/welding-table), then check the working surface, the tooling system and the evidence on each listing. The eleven amazon.co.uk prices run from about £87.99 to £399.95, noted on 16 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

A folding bench earns its place by disappearing when the car returns. The Techigher and GarveeMore offer steel tops, slots, tilt and wheels, but neither listing states a standard fixture grid. They can support one-off brackets without the repeatability of a regular hole system. If storage comes first, that trade-off is on the folding welding table or fixture table page. A fixture surface uses a known hole diameter and pitch so clamps and stops can locate work again. The 5 mm MegaMaxx can add that style of top to a bench you already own, although the listing leaves 16 mm or 20 mm unresolved and does not state pitch. London Boutique states 5/8 inch holes on 2 inch centres. That spacing is 50.8 mm, not a metric 50 mm grid. The 6.83 kg YESWELDER is a three-panel tray with a stated load of about 30 kg. The MegaMaxx plasma bench uses removable bars so sparks fall below the cut. Decide whether you need support, repeatable location or a sacrificial cutting surface before you read any load number.

Choose the hole system before thickness

Hole diameter matters only with pitch. UK specialist makers commonly offer 16 mm for hobby and lighter fabrication, and 28 mm for heavier tooling. If you already own clamps, choose the table around that investment. A larger system is not automatically better when every stop and square must be replaced. For a first system, 16 mm on a stated 50 mm grid is the more common compact-workshop proposition in the UK sources for this guide. A 5/8 inch hole is about 15.9 mm, so a shaft may fit a 16 mm hole. A listing on 2 inch centres uses 50.8 mm spacing, and a multi-hole square made for 50 mm may not line up. OLBRUS is further away, with 0.63 inch holes spaced 2.6 inches apart. Slots, such as GarveeMore's three slots of 3 × 56 cm, let you slide an ordinary clamp. They do not define where the second frame will sit.

Read thickness and flatness together

Thickness affects stiffness and how much abuse the top can take. It cannot be judged alone. UK specialist makers sell ribbed hobby constructions with plates around 6 mm; the ribs and frame are part of the structure. That does not prove every 6 mm plate is flat, or that a thinner folding top is useless for light repair. Published flatness beats an adjective. Most amazon.co.uk listings in this set publish none. Precision in a title is not a measurement. The MegaMaxx TIG top states 5 mm mild steel, and two UK reviews mention a bow or warp. One reviewer pressed and tack-welded it flat during assembly. OLBRUS does not state thickness. Do not infer a figure from another brand.

Treat conflicting loads as unresolved

A load is useful only when the seller defines the condition and the listing agrees with itself. GarveeMore prints 230 kg in the title, about 227 kg dynamic and about 454 kg static elsewhere. Techigher gives 180 kg in one place and 226 kg in another. Averaging those numbers would invent a figure with no engineering meaning. Ask whether the number is an even static load, a moving bench, or the whole frame. A high capacity does not say whether a vice will distort the top, or whether castors stay still while you tack. Techigher and GarveeMore records also contain a 10 × 10 × 10 mm size line that cannot describe those benches. Where the variant is unclear, confirm it with the seller.

When this price band is the wrong shop

These products run from £87.99 for the Techigher to £399.95 for the Nukeson. That band covers portable supports, folding benches, a tabletop and a larger frame. It does not guarantee a documented 16 mm by 50 mm ecosystem. UK specialist fixture tables can start above it. BPT advertised entry models from £549 when this was checked. Paying more makes sense when a published tolerance and compatible side faces save time on recurring work. It makes less sense when the table must fold after occasional repairs. Clamps, stops and squares are a second bill. The room is on the welding table for a garage page. After delivery, how to set up a welding table covers stability, the return path, spatter and the fire watch. The table does not control welding fume.

Common questions

Should I buy 16 mm or 28 mm holes?
Choose 16 mm for a compact hobby system unless your work, existing tooling or chosen manufacturer gives a clear reason for 28 mm. The larger system is aimed at heavier fabrication, and it means larger, costlier accessories. Diameter alone is not enough: confirm the pitch and compatible tooling before ordering.
Will 5/8 inch clamps fit a 16 mm table?
A 5/8 inch shaft is close to 16 mm and may fit an individual hole, but the systems are not interchangeable. Check actual clearance and pitch. A 2 inch imperial grid is 50.8 mm, so a multi-hole accessory made for a 50 mm metric grid may not align.
How thick should a welding table top be?
There is no universal minimum. The frame, ribs, span and intended load all contribute. UK hobby fixture makers commonly use plates around 6 mm in structured tops, while portable products may be thinner. Ask for construction details and flatness rather than choosing on thickness alone.
What should I do when a listing prints two loads?
Treat the capacity as unresolved until the seller says which figure applies to your exact variant, and whether it is static or dynamic. Do not average the figures. A load claim also does not establish flatness, resistance to a concentrated load, or castor stability.
Is a folding bench a real welding table?
Yes, if you need a steel surface for one-off welding and you accept its limits. It is not automatically a fixture table. Without a stated grid, thickness and flatness tolerance, use it as a portable work support rather than a precision locating system.
Why does an amazon size line say 10 mm?
Marketplace catalogue fields can be wrong, or they can describe the packaging. In this set, 10 × 10 × 10 mm cannot describe a bench whose title says roughly 110 × 53 cm. Use the title dimensions that agree with each other, and confirm the delivered variant when fields conflict.
