How to use a soldering iron on a first session

Updated: 21 October 2026

The iron is out of the case, the bench is a kitchen table, and the dangerous minute is the one before the first joint: a hot tip with no stand you trust, flux fume at eye level, and a dial you turn to maximum because the solder will not melt. This page is the first session, not a ranking. Choose the tool in the [soldering iron comparison](/hub/soldering-and-welding/soldering-iron) if you have not bought yet. The notes come from listing instructions and UK review patterns in this batch, not from a timed lab. Heat the joint, not the solder reel, and leave as soon as the metal wets.

Set the bench up before you plug in

Put the stand where your hand already wants to rest the iron, then decide whether you believe it. In this batch, Beizkna’s stand is described as matchbox-sized, the XODMAO stand is unsteady, and a HANDSKIT L-series stand toppled with the iron in it. If the reviews for your ASIN say that, weight the stand or buy another before you heat the tip. UK mains are 230 V with a BS 1363 plug. The XODMAO and the YIHUA 926 name a UK plug; some other rows do not, so look at the live photos. A 13 A fuse is the wrong default for a 60–90 W iron. Where the leaflet is silent, a 3 A fuse is the usual small-appliance choice. One L-series buyer saw a flash and a blown fuse on first switch-on. Test while the return window is open. Rosin in cored solder produces fume that the Health and Safety Executive links to occupational asthma in SR20. Open a window or use a fan that pulls air away from your face. The iron does not make the job fume-free.

Tin the tip, then make one practice joint

A new tip will not wet if it is dirty or if it is not actually hot. Heat the iron, then feed a little cored solder onto the tip until the surface shines. Wipe, add a touch more, and only then go near the work. The YIHUA 926 instructions say to tin at 250°C. One buyer still could not melt solder until the panel was nearer 350°C. If nothing happens, check that the tip is seated. On the HANDSKIT SI Series, thin tips failed to touch the heater, so maximum on the screen still left a cold point. Practise on scrap, not on a flex you cannot replace. Touch the tip to the pad and the lead together, then feed solder at the joint so it flows onto metal. Pull the solder away, then the iron. A good joint looks like a small volcano, not a ball sitting on top. A ball usually means the pad was cold or the tip was dirty.

Temperature, time, and the mistakes that lift pads

Use the lowest temperature that wets the joint in a second or two. One SI Series reviewer worked around 320°C with a fine chisel on small and moderate boards. That is one person’s habit, not a rule you must copy. Large connectors and ground planes need a bigger tip or a station that recovers. Turning a 60 W gun to maximum and leaving it there is how pads peel. On the XODMAO, one buyer only got a fast heat-up by starting at maximum and then reducing. Come down before you touch a fine pad. If you are still pressing after three or four seconds and the solder has not flowed, reseat the tip or change to a chisel that contacts the pad. A needle tip looks precise and often cannot deliver heat. The Beizkna’s finest tip struggled to hold solder while the other shapes were fine.

When you stop and fetch someone else

Stop when the pad lifts, when the board is discoloured, or when the product is still connected to the mains. Unplug the device you are repairing. Fixed wiring in a house is BS 7671 work for a qualified electrician. Anything the manufacturer tells you not to open is the same kind of boundary. If you are clearing a hole, you want wick or a pump, not a dry tip. Those tools have their own pages: soldering flux and a desoldering pump. Hot air for SMD chips is not this iron. If the tip will not tin after you have seated it and tried known-good solder, return the iron while you can. A WEP station that never heated was only discovered after the return window.

Common questions

What temperature should I set on a first joint?
Start near the point where known-good solder wets in a second or two, then adjust. A reviewer on a HANDSKIT pencil worked around 320°C with a fine chisel on small boards. The YIHUA’s own 250°C tinning line was too cool for one buyer, who needed nearer 350°C. Those are experiences, not a calibrated standard. If the joint is a large connector, more heat or a bigger tip beats parking the dial at the top of the scale.
Why will the solder not melt?
The usual causes in this file are a tip that is not seated on the heater, a dirty or untinned tip, a stand-in reel of poor solder, or a set-point that is optimistic. HANDSKIT buyers found thin tips that stayed cold at maximum. Clean and tin first, then reseat or replace the tip, then try a different solder. If a station that worked once now will not leave 90°C, treat it as a fault.
How do I tin a new tip?
Heat the iron, touch cored solder to the tip until it coats, wipe on a damp sponge or brass wool, and coat it lightly again. Do this before the first joint and again whenever the tip goes dull grey. An untinned tip oxidises and then repels solder, which is the complaint some YIHUA owners had with the supplied tips. Add a little solder before you put the iron in the stand at the end.
Do I need the sponge that came in the kit?
You need something damp or a brass cleaner. A dry sponge does not clean, and a missing sponge is not a reason to wipe the tip on your sleeve. Keep the cleaner next to a stand you trust. If the kit stand is the matchbox type reviewers describe, fix the stand problem before you care about the sponge brand.
How long can I leave the iron on?
Do not leave it unattended. Listings in this batch talk about sleep after 5, 10, 15, or 30 minutes, depending on the model, and those timers are claims you should still test. Switch off if you walk away, and pull the plug when the session is over. A hot iron in a stand that reviews say topples is a fire risk, not a convenience.
