Semi-chisel or full chisel chain: the corner to trust

Updated: 22 October 2026

The numbers on your bar already match the loop in your hand. The remaining argument is the corner of the tooth. Semi-chisel or full chisel is that choice, made after the fit is settled, and it is not a reason to change pitch. Retailers describe a square corner as quicker in clean timber and a rounded corner as the usual choice for gritty firewood. A shop sentence that one shape is about 10% slower is not a measurement. Prices below are from the amazon.co.uk listings in the [chainsaw chain comparison](/hub/saw-accessories/chainsaw-chain), stored on 19 October 2026. Peter F. checked those listings. The corner of the cutter

Full chisel is a square corner. Semi-chisel has that corner taken off. Chainsawbars.co.uk uses the same split and still requires matching pitch, gauge, and links. The shape does not turn 56 links into 57. Chamfer chisel is Oregon’s rounded tooth on 91P and 91PX. The UK page for 91P057E says chamfer chisel, for homeowners, up to 42 cc. Low profile names the pitch, not the corner. Measuring comes first, on the buying guide.

Firewood and grit

Garden Machinery Direct calls semi-chisel the usual firewood shape, because grit knocks a square corner back faster, and full chisel the faster shape in clean timber. That is retailer advice, not a timed test. Oregon puts chamfer chisel in the same occasional-use place. A hidden nail ends either tooth. Do not treat a Full Chisel attribute as the better chain for dirty logs. A .325 inch bar does not take a 91P chain because both are sold for firewood.

When the listing disagrees with itself

Believe the bullet and the part number when the attribute says Full Chisel. Oregon 91P057E at £14.11 is 57 links. The bullet says Chamfer Chisel. Oregon’s UK page agrees. The attribute does not, and a 9 cm length line is a separate conflict. Rotatech B079YN73FS at £19.99 is 52 links and 1.3 mm for Husqvarna 135, 235, and 236. The bullet compares it to Oregon 91PX, which is chamfer chisel, and it does not say LP. CHAMSUREUK, Savior, and Anesty say semi-chisel. HBHGBJZAA says low profile, which is not a corner.

What not to change

Do not file a rounded tooth square, and do not drop the depth gauges for a faster cut. AFAG308 tells users of top-handled saws to keep the maker’s profile. A 1.1 mm FuGuiB chain does not become a 1.3 mm match because the bullet says semi-chisel. Believe the part number when the attribute says Full Chisel, and pick the rounded corner for gritty firewood unless you already cut clean timber and will sharpen sooner.

Common questions

Which cutter is for gritty firewood?
The rounded corner sold as semi-chisel or, in Oregon’s name, chamfer chisel. UK retailer advice treats it as the usual firewood shape because grit knocks a square corner back faster. That is not a timed test. It is the reason most bullets in this set, and Oregon’s 91P page, talk to occasional users rather than to a square-corner timber chain.
Which cutter is faster in clean wood?
Retailers describe full chisel, the square corner, as the quicker shape while it is sharp and the timber is clean. They also describe it as the shape that loses that edge sooner in dirt. No percentage on a shop page is a measurement for these listings. If your logs are gritty, the speed claim is the wrong reason to switch.
Is chamfer chisel the same family as semi-chisel?
It is the rounded-corner name Oregon uses on 91P and 91PX, sold for homeowners and occasional use, with a low-kickback claim. It is not the square-corner full chisel those same listings sometimes put in the attribute field. Use chamfer chisel and semi-chisel as the rounded family, and keep full chisel for the square corner.
Why does the Oregon listing say both full chisel and chamfer chisel?
On B006HTA56C the bullet says Chamfer Chisel and the attribute says Full Chisel. Oregon’s UK page for part 91P057E says chamfer chisel. The part number and the bullet agree with each other. The attribute does not. Do not buy that chain expecting a square-corner tooth.
Does full chisel change the pitch?
No. Pitch, gauge, and drive links are unchanged by the corner of the tooth. A full chisel chain at the wrong pitch will not run on the sprocket. Settle those three numbers on the buying guide before you compare corners. A .325 inch bar is not solved by an Oregon 91P chain.
Is a full chisel chain a low-kickback chain?
Not from the name alone. Low kickback, on the chains that claim it here, is tied to the rounded chamfer or semi-chisel tooth, a bumper drive link, and the depth gauge. A Full Chisel attribute on a conflicting listing is not a safety claim. No chain shape prevents kickback.
Should you file a semi-chisel chain into a square corner?
No. Filing a new corner, or lowering the depth gauges for a faster cut, is outside this page and can increase kickback. AFAG308 tells people using top-handled saws at work to keep the maker’s depth-gauge profile. Use the file the chain maker specifies for the tooth you bought, or leave the sharpening to someone who already cuts that shape.
What if the listing only says low profile?
Low profile names the pitch family, also written LP or Picco, not the corner of the cutter. You still need a bullet that says semi-chisel, chamfer chisel, or a part number such as 91P before you know the tooth. A listing that never states the corner has not told you whether it is square or round.
