How to fit a circular saw blade on a 250 mm saw

Updated: October 2026

The new blade is on the bench and the old one is still on the arbor. Guessing the bore, or taking the riving knife off so a thin plate will pass, is how the fit goes wrong. This is how to fit a circular saw blade you have already bought: isolate the saw, prove the hole, seat a ring that is in the box, set the knife inside the kerf, and compare marked speed. We wrote it on 16 October 2026 from HSE guidance, one Axminster manual, and the gaps on these amazon.co.uk listings. We did not fit the blades on a rig. The listings are the [250 mm x 30 mm circular saw blade comparison](/hub/saw-accessories/250mm-x-30mm-circular-saw-blade). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Isolate the saw and read the bore

Unplug the saw, or lock off the isolator, and take the battery off a cordless mitre saw. Wait until the blade stops. Read the arbor on the plate and the bore on the blade. A 30 mm hole on a smaller arbor needs that ring in the box, not only in a photo. Stop if the listing never stated the bore. The Toolzone pair is that case: thin-plate reviews, an Erbauer saw that would not clamp, and spacers mentioned by buyers that the components cell does not name. Measure the hole. If you cannot prove a match, the blade stays off. Test a ring on the bare arbor first. Saxton and Tech Traders name 16, 20 and 25 mm rings. The DeWalt blades do not. The three-pack also prints a 1/2 inch shank against a 30 mm line, so you trust the hole you measure.

Seat the ring and the blade

Tap the ring flush. A proud ring holds the flange off the disc, so the nut feels tight while the blade is free. The flange has to cover the ring. Teeth face the cut. The Axminster AP254TS manual, maximum blade 250 mm on a 30 mm arbor, says the teeth face the front. Your drawing wins if it differs. Thread direction is saw-specific. That manual says clockwise to tighten. Other saws use a left-hand thread. Use the saw's spanners, and stop if the nut or flange is cracked. The negative-rake Saxton title names a 25.4 mm ring the components line does not list. A 25 mm ring on a 25.4 mm arbor is loose. Leave it off. Rake, rather than inventing a bush, is the laminate page.

Set the riving knife and the guard

Set the knife before any timber. HSE guidance puts it within 8 mm of the blade at table level, thicker than the plate and thinner than the kerf. Both 100-tooth Saxton blades print 1.8 mm and 2.6 mm. The AP254TS quotes a 2.5 mm knife, a body of 1.8 to 2.4 mm, and a kerf of 2.6 to 3.2 mm. The DeWalt single prints 1.8 mm and no kerf. Toolzone prints neither. If you cannot show those two comparisons, you are fitting blind. The top guard covers the gullet. Leave the knife on. A cheap-pair review includes someone who removed it. If the plate will not pass, or the saw will not clamp, the disc goes back. Wedging the guard open is how a short cut becomes a kickback.

Speed, dust, and when to stop

PUWER says you do not exceed the marked speed. Only Toolzone prints a blade maximum, 6,000 rpm. The AP254TS prints 4,150 rpm, so that saw's lower mark is the ceiling even if a blade says 6,000. No stamp and no maker's sheet means you stop. HSE eight-hour dust averages are 3 mg/m³ for hardwood and 5 mg/m³ for softwood. Extraction, and a mask if it misses, belong to the cut. Call someone competent when the guard will not close, the knife cannot sit in the kerf, the flange or nut is damaged, the timber is structural, or the saw has a scoring blade. Whether 250 mm reaches on a larger saw is 250 mm versus 254 mm. A proved bore, a covered ring, and a knife inside the kerf is the job you finish yourself.

Common questions

What do you isolate before the nut comes off?
Remove the power: unplug, lock off, or take the battery off. Wait until the blade has stopped. Read the arbor and the bore before the nut moves. The thread direction is in that saw's manual, not in a universal rule.
Which way do the teeth face?
They face the cut, and the blade arrow should match the guard. On the AP254TS the teeth face the front. Your manual wins if the drawing differs. If the arrows disagree, the blade comes off before timber touches it.
How does a 30 mm bore take a smaller arbor?
With a 25, 20, or 16 mm ring, flush, thinner than the plate, and covered by the flange. Saxton and Tech Traders name those rings. Test the ring on the arbor first. The DeWalt boxes do not name rings. A loose bush is not a fit.
What if the plate will not pass the knife?
The blade comes off and the knife stays. It should be thicker than the plate, thinner than the kerf, and within 8 mm at the table. A Toolzone plate that would not pass, and an Erbauer saw that would not clamp, are returns. Running without the knife is outside this method.
What if the title promises a 25.4 mm ring?
Treat it as missing until it is in the box. The negative-rake title says 25.4 mm. The components line lists 16, 20 and 25 mm. A 25 mm ring is not a 1 inch bush. If the arbor is 25.4 mm and the bush is absent, wait for the right ring.
When do you stop and call a professional?
Stop when the guard or knife cannot be set, when the flange or nut is damaged, when the timber is structural, or when the saw has a scoring blade. Those fits are not finished from this page. A straightforward change with a proved bore is the job the steps cover.
