Random orbital sander vs sheet sander

Updated: October 2026

You are sanding a panelled door in a UK hallway, and the square stops beside the panels are where a round pad stops being useful. A random orbital sander vs sheet sander comes down to pad shape and motion. The round tool suits open faces. The rectangular sheet suits square corners and, on a clamp model, sandpaper you cut yourself. Peter F. wrote this from amazon.co.uk listings checked on 16 October 2026 and public UK guides, without a lab test. The wider range is on the [wood sander comparison](/hub/sanders/wood-sander). Two motions that shops often give the same name

A random-orbit sander spins a disc and shifts it in a small orbit, so the scratch changes direction. A sheet sander vibrates a rectangular pad and does not add that spin. Bosch’s UK guides put the rectangle on flat wood and paint, and random orbit on flat and curved work. Homebase calls the finishing action orbital and the combined motion random orbital, so the same search returns both. In this set a 125 mm disc is random orbit and a one-third-sheet rectangle is the sheet sander. An open face wants the disc. A square inside corner wants the rectangle.

Open faces favour random orbit

A 125 mm random-orbit sander is the broader first tool on a flat door, a tabletop or a gentle curve. Bosch links it to faster removal and a finer scratch than a vibrating pad. Keep the tool moving and change grit when the paper clogs. The disc clears an open face faster than a sheet, and it cannot enter a 90-degree corner.

Square corners favour a sheet

A sheet pad can set one corner of the paper on a square stop that a 125 mm disc only touches with its rim. Homebuilding places it on corners, panel doors and between-coat work, and it removes stock more slowly. The BEW220-GB, at about £20, is the clamp example and arrives with one sheet. DEKOPRO is a 90 × 187 mm pad at about £33.99, with two stored reviews and a 220 V attribute. A coarse sheet will still cut veneer. Mouldings are covered on the wood sander for furniture page.

Discs, cut sheets and dust

Random-orbit refills here are 125 mm hook-and-loop discs in common grades. Sheet paper will not grip that pad, and a worn backing pad lets discs fall off. A clamp sheet sander takes ordinary sandpaper cut to size. The BEW220-GB ships with one sheet, and the dust holes still need to line up with the paper. A bag on either machine is not Class M or H extraction. HSE guidance for occupational hand-held sanding calls for on-tool extraction to a suitable Class M or H unit. Ports and voltage are in the wood sander buying guide.

When neither tool is the one to start with

A belt sander removes material faster than either of these two. If you pause, it can gouge timber or break through veneer. A pointed bead sits outside this pair, and Homebuilding sends that tip to a mouse or a hand block. For open doors, choose a random-orbit sander as the one powered tool, and add a sheet sander when square corners are regular. The best wood sanders page compares listings once the pad is chosen.

Common questions

What is the difference between a random-orbit sander and a sheet sander?
A random-orbit sander spins a round disc and orbits it, so the scratch changes direction. A sheet sander vibrates a rectangular pad and does not add that spin. In this set the round tools are 125 mm hook-and-loop discs and the sheet tools are one-third-sheet pads, including the clamp-held BEW220-GB. Choose by shape and motion. Wattage only describes the motor.
Which is better for flat doors and panels?
On an open door or panel, a random-orbit sander is the stronger first choice. It removes material faster and leaves a finer pattern if you keep it moving. A sheet sander can do a flat painted face or a between-coat rub-down. When the disc misses the stops on a panelled door, change to the sheet or a hand block.
Which gets closer to a square corner?
The sheet sander does. A 125 mm round pad cannot sit in a 90-degree corner, so only the rim meets the joint. A rectangular pad can place a corner of the abrasive against that stop. A pointed moulding stays beyond both pads.
Can I use ordinary sandpaper in a sheet sander?
You can if the sander clamps the paper and you cut it to the pad. The BEW220-GB works that way and arrives with one sheet, so later refills can be ordinary sandpaper. A 125 mm random-orbit pad needs hook-and-loop discs. Match the fixing on the listing, and line the dust holes up with the paper.
Will a random-orbit sander leave swirl marks?
It can. The spin that refines the scratch also leaves a swirl if you stop on the timber, stall the pad, or jump from a coarse grit to the finish. Keep the tool moving and lift it clear before it stops. A sheet sander avoids that swirl, though it can leave marks of its own.
Is a sheet sander gentler on veneer?
It removes material more slowly, so you have more time to see that you are through the face. A coarse grit will still cut veneer on either pad. Check for solid wood or a thin face first, and stay with finer grits where the veneer is already thin. Valuable or damaged veneer is work for careful hand sanding.
Do I need both?
Both earn a place when you mix open faces and square corners. For most doors, tops and panels, one 125 mm random-orbit sander plus hand sanding at the stops is enough. Add a sheet sander for the rectangle and, on a clamp model, paper you cut yourself. Heavy stripping needs a belt sander.
