How to use a wood sander

Updated: October 2026

You have a wooden shelf, a door or a tabletop in a UK kitchen or garage, and you want it smooth enough to paint or varnish without swirl marks, a dip or a room full of dust. Learning how to use a wood sander means letting the abrasive cut while the pad stays flat and moving. This guide from Peter F., updated on 16 October 2026, follows public UK sources and amazon.co.uk listing details rather than a laboratory test, and links to Amazon may earn a commission. Which machine to buy is on the [wood sander comparison](/hub/sanders/wood-sander). The routine below starts before you switch on.

Set up the work before you switch on

Clamp the piece so it cannot creep when the pad lands. A loose shelf chatters, and that chatter becomes a scratch you then chase with the next grade. Keep the cable, and the hose if you are using one, clear of the moving pad. Read the rating plate before you trust a listing photo, because a tool that is not meant for UK mains is a reason to stop. Put the tool down if the lead is damaged, the plug is cracked, the switch works only now and then, or the motor stalls, smokes or smells burnt.

Start with the finest grit that still cuts

Norton Abrasives UK treats coarser grades as the ones that remove more wood, and skipping a grit does not heal the scratches already left. Begin with the finest grade that still cuts the defect you can see. On a ridged offcut, that may still be a coarse sheet. On a flat painted door, a finer grade often only keys the film. Sand with the grain. Bosch DIY’s UK guide says not to sand wood against the grain with an orbital, belt or random-orbit sander, because those cross-scratches show once a finish goes on.

Keep the pad flat and moving

Keep the pad flat and in motion. Extra pressure does not stand in for a coarser grit, and pausing in one place hollows the timber. A framed belt path does not carry over unchanged to a palm random-orbit or a sheet sander. A fast belt, such as the SHALL listing, digs a hollow if you dwell. A 125 mm random-orbit pad covers an open face if you do not tip the rim into the wood. A sheet or detail pad gets nearer a corner, though it leaves a ridge if you rock it. Mechanism choice is in the wood sander buying guide.

Treat the bag as a helper, not the control

A dust bag or box collects some of what the pad throws. It is not extraction checked to a stated class. HSE notes that powered sanding, and belt sanding in particular, can produce high levels of wood dust. Document WD7 describes on-tool extraction to a Class M or H unit, a tight hose and holes that line up with the pad. In that workplace setting, respiratory protection is normally UK APF 20. At home, follow the manual. When the bag is full, empty it, because airflow drops and dust escapes at the pad.

Clean, inspect and finish by hand

Switch off, then brush or vacuum the surface before the next grade. Coarse grains left on the wood will score it again under a finer sheet. If earlier scratches remain in light from a window, stay on that grade. Arrises and mouldings are safer by hand, because a powered pad rounds them before you notice. Between coats, you are taking off nibs, not cutting back to bare wood. Stop for a competent assessment if the paint is old and unknown, or if the board might contain a hazardous material. Thin veneer belongs on the wood sander for furniture page. Compare models on the best wood sander by job page when the timber is too thin for the pad you are using.

Common questions

How do I use a wood sander without leaving scratches?
Keep the pad flat and moving, sand with the grain, and do not skip the grade that still has to remove the last scratches. Norton’s UK advice is that a coarser step’s marks remain if you jump ahead. A belt that dwells will hollow the face, and a tipped pad will still swirl. Check in raking light before you change paper.
Which grit should I start with?
Start with the finest grit that still cuts the defect in front of you. A coarse grade removes more, which helps on ridges and is too aggressive on a flat painted face or veneer. No single ladder fits bare oak, old paint and a sound varnish film. If the sheet only polishes, step coarser for that pass, then work back without skipping.
Should I sand with the grain?
Yes. Bosch DIY’s UK guidance says not to sand wood against the grain with an orbital, belt or random-orbit sander, because the marks show under a finish. Festool’s belt example also travels with the grain. A hand block can follow short end grain more slowly, but it should not cut across the face as a shortcut.
Is the dust bag enough indoors?
A bag is a helper, not the control. HSE workplace practice for powered sanders is on-tool extraction to a Class M or H unit, a tight hose and aligned holes, plus respiratory protection normally at UK APF 20. That does not make a domestic bag illegal. For a long indoor job, an extractor that fits the pad is stronger than a full bag, and you still follow the tool manual.
When should I stop and hand-sand or call someone else?
Stop if the tool smokes, smells burnt, has a damaged plug or lead, switches intermittently or keeps stalling. Hand-sand edges, thin veneer and tight curves. The 240-grit Hmkesoteric sheets suit only a spot where a motor would overshoot. Ask a competent person to take unknown old paint, suspect board, or dust you cannot control.
