Wood sander buying guide

Updated: October 2026

A wood sander buying guide starts with the surface in front of you, not with the largest wattage in the search results. Belt sanders, random-orbit sanders, sheet sanders, detail sanders and hand tools share one name and do not do the same job. The [wood sander comparison](/hub/sanders/wood-sander) lines up twelve amazon.co.uk listings, from about £14.99 to about £63.99. The checks run in this order: motion, dust, the abrasive you can buy again, handling, then the plug. Picks by job are on the [best wood sander](/hub/sanders/wood-sander/sub/wood-sander-best) page. Peter F. compiled this on 16 October 2026 from those listings and public UK guidance. This is not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Match the motion to the job

Choose a belt sander to level robust timber or take off a heavy coating, and only if you can keep it moving. The SHALL uses 76 × 533 mm belts, claims 1010 W and six speeds, and weighs 4.58 kg. It will dish a veneer if you pause. A 125 mm random-orbit sander is the broadest first powered choice for open doors, panels and solid tops. Bosch PEX 220 A, DESOON, POSENPRO and JCB use that round format. It will not reach a square corner. A sheet sander vibrates a flat pad and can work closer to a corner than a round disc. BLACK+DECKER BEW220-GB and the DEKOPRO 280 W listing are the one-third-sheet tools. The DEKOPRO mouse, the BLACK+DECKER Mouse, the KATSU and the POPULO are for trim and are inefficient on a tabletop. The Hmkesoteric tool is manual, with 240-grit sheets, for a curve you do not want a motor on.

A bag is not dust control

An included bag or box is not dust control. HSE guidance for powered hand-held sanding at work calls for on-tool extraction with a Class M or H unit, tight hoses and holes that line up, and respiratory protection normally at UK APF 20. That is occupational guidance, not a shopping badge. Several reviews in this set say the small box leaks or falls off. If you sand often, budget a hose and a suitable extractor.

Abrasives you can buy again

Check the abrasive you will buy in six months. A 125 mm hook-and-loop disc is widely stocked. Detail sheets are often a shape that only that pad accepts. The POPULO listing disagrees with itself on whether the pad is 100 × 140 mm or a 4-inch disc. The KATSU page includes a 140 mm disc attribute on a mouse tool. A replacement backing pad matters more than a starter pack if those sheets are the wrong grit for the second day. The JCB is 2.02 kg with variable speed and a 3 m cable. RPM on a sheet sander and OPM on a random-orbit sander are not one scale.

UK mains, and when to walk away

UK mains are nominally 230 V, with a BS 1363 plug. Confirm the rating plate. In this batch the POPULO title says 230 V and an attribute says 120 V. The DEKOPRO one-third-sheet listing is marked 220 V. The SHALL does not state a voltage. Do not treat those lines as a UK 230 V tool. If the plate or the plug is wrong, that listing is not the one to order. The DEKOPRO sheet has fifteen sheets and two reviews. The pack is not the evidence. Call a competent person before you sand unknown old paint, a board that may contain asbestos, or a veneer that is already thin. Stop if a tool smokes, smells burnt, has a damaged lead, or stalls. The head-to-head between the two common finishing motions is on random orbit versus sheet. How to move the pad is on how to use a wood sander.

Common questions

Which type of wood sander should I buy first?
For open DIY woodwork, a 125 mm random-orbit sander. Add a detail or sheet tool only when the round pad cannot reach the corner you care about. One wattage figure will not cover a cupboard door and a worktop, so plan the second tool before you sort by stars.
When is a belt sander too aggressive?
On veneer, on an edge, and anywhere you cannot keep it moving. The SHALL is for robust timber and heavy coating removal, not for a finished top. It weighs 4.58 kg and claims 1010 W. A pause can dig the face.
Is random orbit suitable for preparation and finishing?
It covers both on open faces if you change grit and you do not press. It does not replace a pointed pad in a corner or a belt for rapid levelling. The scratch is less directional than a belt, and a square corner still needs a second method.
Do I need a detail sander for corners?
If the job includes trim, mouldings or inside corners, yes. A mouse pad is slow on a door and inefficient on a tabletop. Buy it as the second tool, after the pad that covers the open face, not as the only sander.
Are 125 mm discs easy to replace?
They are the common UK size in this set. Detail sheets are more often tied to one pad shape. Check the hole pattern before you buy a bulk pack, and ignore a listing cell that disagrees with the pad in your hand.
Does a dust bag make sanding safe?
No. A bag or box is not Class M or H extraction. Occupational guidance still expects proper extraction and, normally, suitable respiratory protection for powered sanding. A leaking box in the reviews is a reason to budget a hose if you sand often.
What if the listing says 120 V or 220 V?
Do not assume UK 230 V. The POPULO conflict and the DEKOPRO sheet’s 220 V line need a plate check. A star rating does not settle the plug. If the plate or the fitted plug is wrong, that listing is not the one to order.
