Multi sander vs orbital sander

Updated: 21 October 2026

You already have a random-orbit sander, or you are about to buy one, and a 3-in-1 kit on amazon.co.uk looks like it might replace it. This page uses the four listings from 19 October 2026, not a lab test: Bosch PSM 200 AES at £81.00, DOVAMAN ROS06A at £47.47, and two DEKOPRO 300 W kits at £36.99. Products Compared can earn a commission if you buy through a link, at no extra cost to you. The specs are on the [multi sander comparison](/hub/sanders/multi-sander). One motor with several bases saves money when the work mixes flats and trim and you own nothing yet. It loses when you already own a disc sander, or when the carton does not include a disc.

What each side actually is

A dedicated orbital sander is a disc, often 125 mm or 150 mm, built to stay on flats. Our 150 mm orbital sander comparison is that tool. A detail or delta sander is the pointed plate for skirting and corners, which is the delta sander comparison. A multi sander tries to be both by swapping bases on one housing. In this set the DEKOPRO bullets and the DOVAMAN listing do that: mouse or detail, sheet, and an orbital pad. The Bosch PSM 200 AES does not. UK reviews describe a rectangular plate and an iron-shaped detail plate, a case and a microfilter. There is no 125 mm head on this ASIN. Separate tools split the dust path, the grip and the weight. You can leave the orbital on the bench and carry only the detail sander up a stepladder. A 3-in-1 makes you carry the whole motor, then stop to change pads. The Bosch change is the one UK reviews call easy, and it is the lightest body here at 1.43 kg. The DOVAMAN is listed at 2.26 kg.

When the 3-in-1 is the better buy

Buy one multi-base kit when you own no sander and the week’s work is a tabletop, then drawer fronts, then skirting. The DEKOPRO B0F66VRWPR at £36.99 is the best value for that mix: a stated 125 mm pad, a sheet pad, a mouse pad, six speeds from 7,000 to 13,000 rpm, 300 W and a 230 V AC line, with 4.1 from 320 reviews. Fine dust leaves the box, and nine sheets are a starter set. The DOVAMAN at £47.47 is the same decision with 4.4 from 299 reviews, a vacuum adapter, and fifteen 80-grit sheets. It is heavier, and reviews mention noise and a heat smell under load. A 125 mm head on a 3-in-1 is a convenience disc. It is not the equal of a dedicated 150 mm orbital. Homebase describes the multi-sander as the tool between detail and random orbit. The Bosch belongs here only if your flats fit a rectangular plate, plus corners. At £81.00 and 4.4 from 586 reviews it is the top pick inside the multi set for the case and the plate change. It is a poor substitute for an orbital sander, because the disc is not in the box.

When separate sanders are the better buy

Keep, or buy, a dedicated orbital when most of the area is flat and wide: tabletops you do often, or doors. A 150 mm pad covers more per pass than the 125 mm head named on the DEKOPRO bullets. If that orbital is already in the house, add a detail sander for the skirting rather than a 3-in-1 that sells you a second orbit motor. Separate tools are also the better buy when dust control is the constraint. UK reviews still describe fines escaping the DEKOPRO and DOVAMAN boxes. A dedicated orbital with a cuff you already trust can be the cleaner flat sander. You still need RPE at APF 20 under HSE wood-dust guidance when extraction is not controlling the dust. Skip the multi kit when the search result is a belt, a polisher or a single orbital. Skip all of these for a floor. None of the four listings is a floor sander.

One recommendation

If you own nothing and the jobs mix a furniture flat with trim, buy one 3-in-1 and do not buy a separate orbital in the same week. Choose the DEKOPRO B0F66VRWPR when the budget is about £37 and you will add sheets and a mask. Choose the DOVAMAN when you want the higher star line and the stated adapter, and you accept 80-grit paper plus a heavier body. Choose the Bosch only when the photos show two plates and a case, not a disc. If you already own a random-orbit sander for flats, do not buy a 3-in-1 for the disc mode. Buy or keep a detail sander for the edges. Bases, plugs and the duplicate DEKOPRO listing are in the multi sander buying guide. The other DEKOPRO ASIN shares the 320-review line and prints 220 V.

Common questions

Does a multi sander replace an orbital sander?
It replaces it only for flats that the included disc or rectangular plate can cover, and only if you do not already own a dedicated orbital. The DEKOPRO and DOVAMAN cartons include an orbital pad. The Bosch PSM 200 AES, on UK reviews of this ASIN, does not include a 125 mm head. A 3-in-1 disc is a compromise against a 150 mm orbital you would use every week.
Is the Bosch a 3-in-1?
Not in the sense of mouse, sheet and 125 mm disc. UK reviews describe two plates, rectangular and detail, with a case and a microfilter. It is the top pick in the multi set for that two-plate job. It is the wrong answer if the question was what replaces my orbital sander.
When is a separate detail sander enough?
When the orbital you already own handles the flats, and the new work is skirting, window boards and corners. You then avoid paying for another disc motor inside a 3-in-1. You still unplug to change sheets, and you still treat wood dust as a COSHH issue.
Which 3-in-1 should I buy if I own nothing?
DEKOPRO B0F66VRWPR at £36.99 is the best value: three bases, six speeds, 230 V AC, 4.1 from 320 reviews. DOVAMAN at £47.47 is the step up if 4.4 from 299 reviews and a listed vacuum adapter matter more than the extra £10, with the limit that the sheets are all 80-grit. Ignore the second DEKOPRO star line. It is the same 320 reviews in this capture.
Will one dust box beat two tools?
No. A single pod is simpler to empty, and it is still the part UK reviews criticise on the budget kits. Two tools can mean two ports, which is more faff, and the tool you use on the large flat can be the one whose cuff already fits your vacuum. Neither arrangement meets an HSE wood-dust limit by itself.
What about price if I buy two specialists?
Two corded specialists will usually cost more than £36.99, and they take two sockets’ worth of storage and two flexes. That premium is rational when each tool will be used often enough that pad changes annoy you. It is a poor first purchase when you have one bedroom of furniture and no sander at all. Start with one multi-base kit.
Can I use the multi sander on floors and the orbital on furniture?
Use neither of these multi listings on a floor. Bosch reviewers say the PSM 200 AES is not for large floors, and a 125 mm pad on a DEKOPRO is still a hand tool for furniture. Keep the orbital on tabletops and doors. Floors need a floor machine and a dust plan that is outside this page.
