How to use a multi sander

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have fitted the wrong pad, pressed too hard, and watched a swirl appear in a varnish coat. This is how to use a multi sander on the four corded kits captured on 19 October 2026: the Bosch PSM 200 AES, the DOVAMAN ROS06A, and the two DEKOPRO 300 W listings. Products Compared did not run a lab sanding test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Which carton to buy is on the [multi sander comparison](/hub/sanders/multi-sander). Unplug, fit the base that matches the surface, step the grit, and stop when the dust or the motor tells you to.

Fit the base that matches the wood

Unplug the flex before you touch a plate. UK reviews say the Bosch plate change is straightforward once you have done it, and they say the DEKOPRO pad fit has a learning curve. Do the first change on the bench, with the tool cold. Use the detail or mouse plate on skirting, window stools and chair rails. Use the rectangular or sheet plate on a small flat such as a drawer front. Use the orbital disc, where the carton includes one, on a tabletop. The DEKOPRO bullets and the DOVAMAN listing describe those three shapes. The Bosch PSM 200 AES, in UK reviews of this ASIN, is two plates, rectangular and iron-shaped, not a 125 mm disc. Check that the abrasive holes line up with the dust ports.

Grit, speed and how hard to press

Start coarse enough to remove the old film, then leave that grit behind. A practical ladder for a small piece of furniture is 80, then 120, then 240. The DOVAMAN carton is fifteen sheets of 80-grit only. The DEKOPRO B0F66VRWPR carton is nine starter sheets. Neither pack is a finish kit. Change the sheet when it clogs or glazes. Both DEKOPRO listings state six steps from 7,000 to 13,000 rpm. The DOVAMAN states six speeds, with a 24,000 rpm maximum that is the seller’s claim, not a measurement. Use a lower step on softwood and between coats. The Bosch specification row prints 176 rpm. Ignore it. Let the weight of the tool do the work. Keep the pad flat and keep it moving. A dwell of a few seconds leaves a hollow. The Bosch at 1.43 kg is the lightest body in the set. The DOVAMAN is listed at 2.26 kg.

Dust while you are sanding

Empty the box before it is packed solid. Fine dust was already the weak point in DEKOPRO and DOVAMAN reviews. Bosch UK reviews are kinder about the microfilter, and even that is a convenience collector. If the listing includes an adapter, seat a household vacuum before you start. The port diameter is not stated on these listings, so test the cuff on the bench. HSE guidance in WD7 expects extraction where you can arrange it and respiratory protective equipment at assigned protection factor 20 when the dust is not controlled. Do not dry-sweep. The fuller set-up is on sander dust extraction. Pause if the motor smells hot. Unplug, let it cool, and shorten the next run. A burning smell, a shock, or a nicked flex is not a pause. Stop. The flex should end in a BS 1363 plug. One DEKOPRO specification row prints 220 V. If that is the unit that arrived, look at the plug before you assume the sibling’s 230 V AC line applies.

Mistakes that mark the work

The usual marks come from a short list. People sand a film with 80-grit and then stain it. People change plates with the plug in. People block the dust holes and then blame the pod. People press the nose of a detail pad into a corner. People walk a 3-in-1 across a floor. None of these four listings is a floor machine. Call in a professional for lead paint, for a coating you cannot identify, and for a workplace that should already have extraction and a hand-arm vibration assessment. A weekend job on a known domestic varnish is in scope. If you are still choosing the carton, the trade-offs are in the multi sander buying guide.

Common questions

Do I unplug to change the plate?
Yes. Unplug before you release an SDS catch or pull a hook-and-loop pad. The Bosch change is described as easy in UK reviews, and the DEKOPRO fit is described as something you learn. Either way, a live switch is a poor third hand. Do the first swap on a bench.
Which grit should I start with?
Start with 80-grit when you are cutting back old varnish or paint you know is safe to sand. Move to 120 and then 240 before a new finish. The sheets in the DOVAMAN box are 80-grit only, and the DEKOPRO starter packs are small, so buy the finer grits before you begin.
How hard should I press?
Press only enough to keep the pad flat. The tool’s own weight is the pressure on a horizontal top. White knuckles and a stalled feeling mean you are loading the motor and glazing the sheet. On the Bosch, extra pressure does not make up for a missing 125 mm disc. On the DEKOPRO, extra pressure is how a long pass runs the motor warm.
Can I sand a floor with these?
No. UK reviews of the Bosch say it is not for large floors, and the 125 mm pads on the DEKOPRO and DOVAMAN are furniture-scale discs. A floor wants a dedicated floor sander and a dust plan that these pods are not.
What do I do with the 176 rpm figure?
Ignore it. The Bosch PSM 200 AES specification row in this capture prints 176 rpm, which is not a believable orbital speed. Do not set another sander to match it, and do not conclude the Bosch is slow. The usable speed ranges in this set are the ones the DEKOPRO and DOVAMAN listings actually state.
When should I stop and get help?
Stop if the paint might contain lead, if you do not know the coating, if you feel a shock, or if the motor smells of burning rather than merely warm. Also stop if the work is for an employer who needs extraction and a vibration assessment. A hot smell after a long DIY pass is a cool-down. A burning smell is the end of the session.
Does the dust box replace a mask?
No. Empty it often, and use the vacuum adapter when the listing includes one, because that catches more than the pod. DEKOPRO and DOVAMAN reviews still describe fine dust escaping. HSE guidance points to RPE at APF 20 when dust is not controlled. The box is a helper for visible chips, not the control for an occupied room.
