How to use a drywall sander

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have the pole out of the box, the skim looks dry enough, and the first pass will either flatten the joints or cut a groove you then have to fill again. This is how to use a drywall sander on plasterboard in a UK house: set the dust path and the room up before the motor runs, keep the pressure light, and stop when the surface is flat rather than when the disc looks worn. Models and prices sit on the [drywall sander comparison](/hub/sanders/drywall-sander). Peter F. used amazon.co.uk listing details and public UK guidance. We did not sand a test wall. Prep and cure time

Read the tub. Sanding soft mud rolls it into pills and leaves a low spot under paint. There is no single hour-count for a cold UK bedroom: the maker’s drying time is the rule, and a thumb-nail that does not dent the surface is the check. Kits in this set, including CUBEWAY and the Cutforge powered-model bullets, ship grits from about 80 to 240. As a rule of thumb, start around 80–120 on a proud joint, move to about 150–180 for ordinary compound, and finish around 220–240 only when the wall is already flat. Electrical Safety First says to unplug before you change a pad, and not to sand paint you suspect contains lead.

Connect the dust path

Put the hose on before the first metre of wall, and align the disc holes with the pad. HSE’s WD7 note makes the same point for on-tool extraction: if the holes do not meet, the airflow has nowhere to go. An Evolution reviewer saw the holes block after a few minutes, then the dust stopped and the switch stuck. Empty the bag before it is packed. A household vacuum is not an M-class extractor. Evolution says the tool suits an M-class unit, and that unit is a separate purchase. If you only have a wet-and-dry, connect it for a short DIY job and wear respiratory protection. HSE treats taped plasterboard sanding as high gypsum dust. Seal the doorway. Class letters are on drywall sander dust extraction. Reviews in this set still describe cuff leaks and, on DEKOPRO, almost no capture.

Walls, joints and ceilings

Hold the head flat and let the tool’s weight do the work. Pressing harder dishes the joint and burns the plasterboard paper. Start low. ZHJAN’s dial runs from 1,000 to 2,100 rpm, and reviewers who liked it used the lower steps on new plaster. Overlap along the joint, then across it, and keep the head moving. The round head will not finish an internal corner. That is the Evolution triangle, or a hand block. If the triangle will not lock, which one UK buyer reported, finish that edge by hand. Route the cable behind you. Use a fully unwound extension and an RCD. A ZHJAN review describes a home RCD tripping after about an hour, and another a switch that was hard to stop. If it will not switch off, unplug it. Work the ceiling in bands. CUBEWAY’s own text says it is not the long-handle ceiling tool. Do not strip a popcorn-style ceiling that might date from before 2000 until you know it is not asbestos.

Inspect and clear the floor

Unplug, then look along the wall with a work light or the tool’s LED at a shallow angle. Circle high spots and hit them with the finer disc, still with light pressure. If you can see the brown face of the plasterboard, you need filler, not more sanding. Vacuum the floor and the ledges before you open the door. Call a plasterer for a commercial ceiling, if you suspect asbestos or lead, or when a second pass still will not meet a flatness you can paint. If the job is a patch a block could finish, read drywall sander versus hand sanding before you start.

Common questions

What grit sequence should I use?
As a rule of thumb from the discs in these kits, use about 80–120 on proud joints, about 150–180 on ordinary compound, and about 220–240 only when the wall is already flat. CUBEWAY and Cutforge’s powered bullets both span 80 to 240. Starting too fine polishes ridges. Starting too coarse on a thin skim can cut the paper face.
How long should I wait after a skim?
Wait until the compound maker says it is dry, and until a thumb-nail does not dent it. A cold or damp UK room takes longer than the shortest time on the tub. Sanding early rolls the mud, clogs the disc and leaves hollows. There is no honest single number of hours for every filler.
How much pressure should I use?
Enough to keep the pad in contact, and no more. The head’s own weight is usually sufficient on a skim. Pressing to speed the job dishes the filler and burns plasterboard paper. If nothing comes off, drop a grit. A Bluebow buyer spent about three hours on old paint and then cleared it faster by hand.
When do I change discs?
Change the disc when it clogs, glazes, or when extraction falls away because the holes are packed. Do not wait until the grit is bald if the face is loaded. Unplug first. The 80–240 sheets in these kits are consumables. A blocked disc was part of the Evolution review in which extraction stopped after a few minutes.
Can I sand painted walls?
You can scuff sound modern paint on a low speed, with a finer disc, once you know it is not lead. Electrical Safety First says not to sand suspected lead paint. Old paint that will not cut, as in the Bluebow review, may need a scraper. If the paint is on a textured ceiling of unknown age, stop and identify the coating.
