Drywall sander buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are looking at a freshly skimmed bedroom, the ceiling is about 2.4 m, and the amazon.co.uk results all look like the same white pole with an LED ring. This drywall sander buying guide is the order of checks that change the job: pad diameter, how far the pole reaches, whether the dust path is a bag or a hose, and whether the listing shows a UK mains fit. Prices in this captured set, on 19 October 2026, run from £62.99 to £179.97. The [drywall sander comparison](/hub/sanders/drywall-sander) holds those shelf prices and star lines. Peter F. compared amazon.co.uk listings and public UK guidance. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Pad and disc size

Most kits sit near a 225 mm round head, the size of hook-and-loop plaster discs in UK trade aisles. Evolution R225DWS-T at £131.00 states a 225 mm orbital head and an 180 mm triangle, though the title also says 255 mm, so trust the table and the discs in the box. ZHJAN DMJF7238B at £109.99 prints 215 mm. A 215 mm plate with 225 mm paper leaves the rim unsupported. CUBEWAY CWS180L at £62.99 is the 180 mm tool, and its own bullet sends ceilings to a different model. If the disc holes miss the pad, extraction stops, which one Evolution reviewer saw after a few minutes. Keep the first disc as the template. Grit, once the diameter is settled, is on how to use a drywall sander.

Pole reach and weight

A typical UK ceiling is about 2.4 m. You need a pole you can still control when your arms are tired, not a 2.4 m shaft. HYCHIKA at £86.40 prints about 1.30–2.00 m. Evolution describes its pole for ceiling heights of 1.75 m and above. Weight is handled badly. ZHJAN lists 8.05 kg. Evolution lists 4.3 kg and reviewers still call it heavy because the motor sits at the head. AYAJEK lists 3.5 kg with the same fatigue note. HYCHIKA’s 1.6 kg does not match reviewers who found it awkward, so doubt that row. Only Evolution gives a triangle for internal corners, and reviewers have failed to fit it or to buy replacements.

Dust bag, hose or extractor

Every kept listing mentions a bag, a hose or vacuum compatibility. That sentence is not a dust result. HSE treats sanding taped plasterboard joints as high gypsum dust work and expects on-tool extraction, secure hoses, maintained filters and respiratory protection when exposure is not controlled. A cloth bag clogs on fresh compound. HYCHIKA mentions about 2 m of hose. CUBEWAY lists a 2 m hose plus cone and straight adaptors. Evolution names M-class compatibility and does not include the extractor. DEKOPRO’s only UK review, 1.0 from 1, says the vacuum collected almost nothing. GOEHNER'S “99%” title and CUBEWAY’s “95%” line have no test method. Class letters are on drywall sander dust extraction.

Power, speed and the listing rows

Titles in this set run from about 710 W to 1,050 W. More watts do not repair a loose shroud. Variable speed does help, because a fresh skim cuts differently from old paint. ZHJAN offers 1,000 to 2,100 rpm. AYAJEK’s bullets claim 900–2,600 rpm while the table stops at 1,800 rpm. Prefer a 230 V table and a UK 13 A plug you can see. CUBEWAY names a 4 m UK plug cable and its table still says 220 V. HYCHIKA’s bullet says 220 V and the table says 230 V AC. Cutforge, DEKOPRO and GOEHNER'S print no voltage. The two ZHJAN ASINs share 4.2 from 78, so that is one sample, not 156 ratings. Named picks are on the best drywall sander page.

Common questions

Do I need 225 mm discs?
You need discs that match the pad you receive. Evolution’s table and ZHJAN’s 215 mm row are the figures to shop against, and CUBEWAY is an 180 mm pad. A 225 mm disc on a smaller plate overhangs. Where Evolution’s title says 255 mm and the table says 225 mm, match the disc to the pad in the box.
Will a drywall sander reach a 2.4 m ceiling?
Often yes, if the pole extends towards 1.8–2.0 m and you can hold it up, which is what HYCHIKA’s range describes. Evolution states ceiling heights of 1.75 m and above. Reach is not comfort. Reviewers report shoulder fatigue because the motor is at the head. CUBEWAY at £62.99 tells you to use a different model for ceilings.
Is the dust bag enough, or do I need a vacuum?
The bag is a start, and UK reviews keep saying it is not the whole job. AYAJEK owners report better capture with a wet-and-dry vacuum. DEKOPRO’s only review says capture was poor even with the vacuum path. HSE expects on-tool extraction for taped joints. A household vacuum is not that unit. Budget the hose and the adaptor with the sander.
Does it have a UK plug?
Only when the listing says so. CUBEWAY names a 4 m UK plug cable, while the voltage table says 220 V, so you still check the rating plate. Cutforge, DEKOPRO and GOEHNER'S leave voltage blank. Electrical Safety First expects a UK 3-pin plug on a mains sander. A model code that ends in UK is not a plug.
Is a dual head worth it for corners?
Only Evolution offers a 225 mm round head and an 180 mm triangle. That suits ceiling edges and reveals if the head fits and you can buy more triangles. UK reviews include a triangle that would not connect and replacements that were unavailable. On open walls, a single round head is simpler.
