How to use a disc sander

Updated: 21 October 2026

The first pass is where most damage happens: a disc fed the wrong way, or a pad stuck on crooked. This is how to use a disc sander as two jobs. A bench disc wants the wood fed into the table. A handheld orbital wants the pad flat on a panel. The [disc sander comparison](/hub/sanders/disc-sander) holds the ten amazon.co.uk listings. Peter F. used those listings and HSE’s sander page. There was no lab test. Dust limits are on the [sanding dust extraction](/hub/sanders/disc-sander/sub/disc-sander-dust-extraction) page.

Before you switch on

Put on eye protection and a mask, and decide where the dust will go. A box catches some of it. A port with no hose catches none. Keep the table close to the disc, clamp a portable machine, and do not start with a loose offcut in your fingers. UK mains are 230 V, and a 240 Volt listing still needs a BS 1363 plug. The capture does not confirm plug shape. On the KATSU, one machine did not start out of the box. If the switch is intermittent, stop and return it. Do not bypass it.

Bench disc and combo disc stations

Clamp a portable bench disc before you sand. The KATSU 101720 includes a screw clamp, a 125 mm disc and a table from −10° to +50°. Keep the gap to the disc small. HSE says to sand on the side where rotation pushes the wood down onto the table, usually the right-hand side of a clockwise disc. Check the arrow on the guard, and feed with light pressure. At 140 W the disc slows if you lean on it. Take the table off, with the plug out, to change the disc. On the Bucktool, keep work moving on the 100 × 915 mm belt so you do not cut a groove. If you are still choosing, the bench versus handheld page separates them.

Handheld orbital

Fit the disc with the plug out, or with the battery off on the Lnopever, and line any dust holes up with the pad. Place the pad on the wood before you start if the tool has a soft start. One PEX 220 A reviewer says this model does. Keep the pad flat. Tipping the rim digs a crescent. Black+Decker reviewers who pressed hard, or left the bag full, had the pad come apart. DEKOPRO bullets describe a pad brake when you lift off. Use that lift to move. The PEX 220 A has no dial, so grit choice does that job. The MAXXT title states a 5.0 mm orbit. The cheaper orbitals do not. Pad size is in the buying guide.

Finishing and stopping

Work from coarse to fine. A rule of thumb for thick paint on wood is about 80 grit, then 120, then 180 or 240. The DEKOPRO pack runs 60, 80, 120, 240 and 400. The KATSU pack is 80, 150 and 240. Stop a grade when the previous scratches are gone, or sooner if you smell scorching or the hook-and-loop face is bald. A glazed disc will not cut. On a bench disc, a black smear is the cue to ease off. Unplug and empty the box outside.

When to hand the job over

Stop and get a professional when the bench machine has no guard, a broken switch, or an emergency stop that does not work. Stop if the job is production sanding for employees. HSE expects extraction and respiratory protection there, not a domestic bag. A palm orbital is a poor tool for a whole floor. Do not keep going on a tool that has shocked you. The MAXXT capture includes that report. Unplug it and return it.

Common questions

Which side of the table do I use on a clockwise disc?
Use the side where the disc is travelling down onto the table, so the wood is pressed into the rest rather than lifted off it. HSE describes that feed direction for disc sanders. On a clockwise disc it is usually the right-hand side as you look at the disc. Confirm the arrow on your guard.
How do I line up a hook-and-loop disc?
Unplug first. Set the disc on the pad so any dust holes overlap the holes in the pad, then press from the centre outwards so you do not trap a crease. A disc that overhangs on one side will grab. On the KATSU you remove the table to change the disc, which reviewers find fiddly.
When should I replace the backing pad?
Replace it when discs no longer grip, or when the hooks are bald or melted. Bosch PEX 220 A reviewers lost grip after heavy pressure, and Black+Decker reviewers had discs fall off within minutes when the pad was poor. A new disc on a dead pad will not stay. If the pad is coming apart from the tool, stop using it.
Can I sand metal on the same orbital?
The Black+Decker title lists metal as well as wood. If you do sand metal, empty and clean the dust box before you go back to bare timber. Metal particles and wood dust are a bad mix in one bag, and a bench disc can throw sparks into a wood-dust system. HSE warns about that mix on woodworking sanders. Clean between a rusty hinge and an oak top.
How do I clamp a mini bench disc?
Use the screw clamp in the KATSU box, or a proper bench mount, so the machine cannot walk when the disc grabs. HSE’s advice for a portable bench disc is to clamp it. A small offcut needs the table or a jig, not a pinch grip. If the switch does not stay on, or the machine is dead on arrival, return it.
