Sanding dust extraction UK

Updated: 21 October 2026

Fine sanding dust hangs in the air after the noise stops, and a small bag does not end that. Sanding dust extraction, indoors in the UK, is the difference between a tidy bench and a room you keep breathing. This page is what the ten amazon.co.uk listings ship with, and where HSE’s rules sit if you employ people. It does not pick a brand. The machines are on the [disc sander comparison](/hub/sanders/disc-sander). Peter F. read those listings on 19 October 2026 and HSE’s wood-dust sheets. We did not measure exposure. What the listings actually put in the box

Palm orbitals here arrive with a box or bag, not a vacuum. The Bosch PEX 220 A includes a microfilter box and three sheets. The PEX 400 AE uses a plastic shell. Black+Decker, both DEKOPRO pages and the Yunirvana list a bag or box. The MAXXT bullets claim Ø 35 mm vacuum compatibility, which is a hose size, not a vacuum in the box. The KATSU includes a dust adapter and no extractor. The Bucktool row is a port only. Which tool you should be holding is on the buying guide.

Handheld orbitals at home

Treat the bag as a first catch and assume it leaks. On the PEX 220 A the filter can take as long to clear as the sanding. On the PEX 400 AE the shell falls off. Black+Decker and DEKOPRO bags draw the same complaint. A household vacuum is a fair next step for your own DIY, and it is not local exhaust ventilation. One Yunirvana owner adapted a Henry. The MAXXT’s Ø 35 mm claim only helps if your hose is that size.

Bench and combo machines

A fixed disc throws dust off a spinning face, and the port only helps with a hose on it. HSE’s sheet WD13 describes an annular hood around a fixed disc. The KATSU and the Bucktool ship a port, not that hood. Do not mix metal dust into a wood-dust hose. The Bucktool’s belt makes dust along 915 mm as well as at the 150 mm disc. Table and feed are on the how to use a disc sander page.

Workplace COSHH, briefly

If you employ people, a domestic bag is not your COSHH assessment. HSE’s WD0 sheet expects extraction and respiratory protection together when exposure stays high. WD7 covers hand-held sanders, and INDG408 is the leaflet for buying local exhaust ventilation. None of these ten ASINs is compliant because a bullet mentions a dust box. MDF dust is still wood dust, and it is often finer.

A short checklist before an indoor job

Know whether you have a bag or a port only. Empty the bag, and line the disc holes up, before you start. Fit a hose if the listing gave you a port, and do not point the exhaust at your face. Wear eye protection and a close-fitting mask. Empty the waste outside. The best disc sander page can wait until the dust path is real.

Common questions

Do I need a mask if the bag is on?
Yes for fine wood dust indoors. The bag or microfilter box on these orbitals catches a share of the dust, and UK reviews on the Bosch and Black+Decker tools say plenty still escapes or the box clogs. HSE’s woodworking guidance points to a close-fitting FFP3 when a disposable mask is the respiratory protection for wood dust.
Can I use a household vacuum on the port?
You can, on a palm sander, for your own DIY, and it usually beats a loose bag. One Yunirvana review did that with a Henry. It is not the same as local exhaust ventilation on a fixed bench machine, and a domestic filter can clog and blow fine dust back. Match the hose to the port. The MAXXT listing claims Ø 35 mm compatibility, which only helps if your hose is that size.
What about MDF dust?
Treat it as wood dust that stays airborne easily. A bag that already leaks on softwood will not suddenly be enough for MDF. HSE still expects extraction and suitable RPE where exposure remains high, and that bar is easier to hit with MDF than with a few passes on pine. None of these listings is a licence to sand sheets of MDF in a closed room.
Does the Bosch microfilter count as extraction?
It counts as an on-tool box, which is what the PEX 220 A ships with. Reviewers both praise it and complain that it clogs. It is not an annular hood, and it is not a COSHH sign-off. Use it, empty it, and still wear a mask indoors. The PEX 400 AE’s plastic shell is a weaker version of the same idea: owners report it falling off.
What hood does a bench disc need?
In a workplace, HSE’s WD13 sheet describes an annular hood around a fixed disc, ducted to proper extraction. The KATSU and the Bucktool do not include that hood. They include a port or an adapter. At home, put a hose on that port before you sand, clamp the machine, and keep the table close to the disc. An open port does not extract.
When do employer rules replace this advice?
As soon as someone else is at work, COSHH applies and this page’s bag-and-mask notes are only a warning, not the assessment. HSE’s WD0 sheet expects extraction and RPE together for woodworking, and INDG408 covers buying local exhaust ventilation. A product title that says “dust removal” is not that assessment. For employed work, follow the HSE sheets and a competent supplier. For your own furniture, the checklist above is the practical bar.
