150mm random orbital sander buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to buy a 150 mm random-orbit sander for a door, a tabletop or a run of filler, and the listings lead with 350 W or 450 W. This 150mm random orbital sander buying guide puts the stroke, the volts and the dust port ahead of that wattage. The model table, with amazon.co.uk prices on 19 October 2026, stays on the [150 mm orbital sander comparison](/hub/sanders/150mm-orbital-sander). Peter F. read the UK listings and public guidance. There was no lab test. A qualifying amazon.co.uk purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Pad size and orbit are different numbers

A 150 mm pad is the disc diameter, about 6 inches. The orbit is how far the pad swings off centre while it also spins, and that figure is a separate millimetre count. A title that only says 150 mm has not told you which job the machine is built for. In this set the orbit is not stated on the TEENO, the Ezzylife, the MAXXT R7308, the Anesty or the VeftBltrem. If you only buy one corded machine for mixed flats, a stated 5 mm orbit is the more useful stroke. Use 5 mm vs 2.5 mm orbit before you pay extra for a 2.5 mm listing.

Mains, site voltage, and air

UK domestic mains are 230 V. Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, regulation 35, requires a BS 1363 plug and a BS 1362 fuse on domestic flex meant for a UK socket. Read the technical table, not only the title. The ONEMANA R7303-4, the RAYBAO 3801-N and three MAXXT brushless models print 230 V. The MAXXT R7308 table prints 110 V, at £158.99. That is a transformer tool until the rating plate shows otherwise. The TEENO table says 220 V. The Anesty at £27.90 is air-powered, and its written reviews are not from the United Kingdom.

Dust port, brake, and discs

HSE guidance in WD7 wants on-tool extraction for powered sanding of wood, through a proper adaptor, with the disc holes lined up. Class M and class H belong on orbital sander dust extraction. ONEMANA’s bullets claim 27 mm and 35 mm connections. The RAYBAO includes a dust bag. The TEENO includes a dust collector. A brake matters when you lift the pad. The TEENO, the Ezzylife, the R7308, the Anesty and the VeftBltrem do not name one. Several bullets claim a body around 1.27 kg while Amazon’s item weight is over 2 kg.

What the price bands are buying

Under £60 you are buying a corded body, not a stated orbit. From about £125 to £180 the listings claim a brushless motor around 350 W, sometimes with UK reviews that mention electric shocks on MAXXT models. Who each band suits is on the best 150 mm orbital sander page. If a tool shocks you, stop, unplug it, and use the seller under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Common questions

Is 150 mm the right pad if I mostly do furniture?
For tabletops, doors and wide panels, a 150 mm pad covers the flat faster than a 125 mm pad. On chair rails, narrow edges and veneer, the larger pad is easier to tip, and a tipped pad rounds the corner. If the kit includes a 125 mm pad, use that for small faces and keep the 150 mm pad for open timber. Pad diameter still does not tell you the orbit.
What does a 5 mm orbit mean if the title already says 150 mm?
The 150 mm is the disc. The 5 mm is the stroke, the distance the pad orbits while it spins. Makers such as 3M describe about 5 mm as general-purpose sanding and about 2.5 mm as a finer finish stroke. A listing that never prints an orbit has not made that choice for you. Compare the strokes before you assume every 150 mm machine cuts the same way.
How do I tell a 110 V tool from a 230 V tool?
Open the technical details, not only the title. The MAXXT R7308 table says 110 V, which means a site transformer until the plate shows otherwise. Several brushless listings say 230 V. The ONEMANA 2.5 mm model, the TurboVolt, the Ezzylife and the VeftBltrem do not state a voltage. When the box arrives, read the rating plate and look for a BS 1363 plug if the flex is meant for a UK wall socket.
Do I need variable speed?
You need it if you sand filler, softwood and old varnish on the same afternoon. A high speed clears stock and leaves deeper scratches. A lower speed is the usual way to keep a fine grit from burning a film coat. Six steps are common on the brushless listings here. A single-speed tool can still sand, with less control when the surface changes.
Is a second 125 mm pad worth it?
It is worth it when the job mixes wide panels and edges. The TEENO, the TurboVolt and the MAXXT R7303-UK-50 include both sizes. You still buy discs to match each pad, including the hole pattern. A second pad does not repair a missing orbit, a 110 V table, or reviews that mention shocks. If you only sand large flats, one 150 mm pad is enough.
What should I check on the day it arrives?
Confirm the orbit on the tool if the listing stated one, the voltage on the plate, and whether the plug is a UK 13 A type. Fit a disc, look through the holes, and see that a hose adaptor pushes on without tape. Run it on scrap before you sand a finished face. If it shocks you, or if it smells of burning and stops, unplug it and contact the seller. Do not take the housing apart.
