Security safe for home insurance

Updated: October 2026

You can order a safe tonight and still find, after a burglary, that the policy wanted a named grade, a plate inside the door, and a fixing you never made. A security safe for home insurance is that evidence. The [security safe comparison](/hub/safes-and-secure-storage/security-safe) covers twelve amazon.co.uk cabinets. None shows EN 14450, EN 1143-1, Sold Secure, or an AiS mark. Published cash bands are guidelines, not a promise that your policy will pay those sums for a box in this set. The Products Compared editorial team took the bands from public UK guides on 16 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The bands insurers usually quote

UK sellers and crime-prevention pages repeat a ladder. EN 14450 S1 is often quoted around £2,000 cash and £20,000 valuables. S2 is often quoted around £4,000 cash and £40,000 valuables. EN 1143-1 grade 0, Eurograde 0, is often quoted around £6,000 cash and £60,000 valuables. Lock & Key publishes the S2 pair and says the insurer must accept the model, the lock, the fixing, and the values together. NFU Mutual has used Eurograde 0 as an example. Which? and Secured by Design still tell you to ask. Jewellery is often talked about as ten times the cash figure. The National Association of Jewellers says that ten-times multiple is common and that it can move. If your schedule states a lower valuables limit, that figure is the one that matters. The security safe buying guide puts this question first: litres and a keypad come after the clause.

What the insurer actually accepts

Howden's home-safe note says a claim can fail if the safe is the wrong rating or poorly installed. The check they describe is a plate inside the door from a body such as AiS, VdS, ECB-S, or LPCB. A sentence on a product page is weaker than a plate. AiS approval, in the way Safe Fortress describes it, is a stamp tied to safes tested by bodies such as ECB-S, VdS, SBSC, CNPP/A2P, and LPCB. The AiS list is not a public catalogue you can download as a shopper. Burton's own S2 material says the rating depends on the safe being bolted. An unfixed certified safe can lose the rating the brochure printed. Some insurers also want a professional install. A 4.6-star Amazon Basics cabinet is a popular listing, not an AiS plate. If the claim depends on the safe, the plate and the fixing are the documents.

Why this comparison's safes are not a cash rating

A cash rating is what an insurer may pay for a named, fixed, certified safe. These twelve listings do not show that certificate. Bolting an uncertified safe to a concrete floor makes it harder to carry away, and it does not create EN 14450. A keypad, a fingerprint reader, or a thicker advertised door does not create it either. The NALULI at about £169.99 has a spec weight of 21.4 kg and still names no grade. A best-buy page can still name an Amazon Basics or a small Yale for someone who does not need cover. This page is where that recommendation fails. If you need the policy to respond, buy the certified model the insurer will name, then keep the invoice, the plate, and the fixing evidence.

What to ask before you order

Ask which standard they accept, such as EN 14450 S2 or a Eurograde. Ask the cash limit and the valuables limit, including whether jewellery is capped below the ten-times idea. Ask whether the lock type is restricted, whether the safe must be bolted, and whether a fitter has to do it. Ask what evidence they want with a claim: the certificate, a photo of the plate, the fixing, the receipt. A published band is not that answer. If they require bolting, follow a method that matches the surface, which is what the install guide is for, and stop if the wall is hollow or the floor hides heating you must not drill. Firearms sit outside this page. A firearm licence and a gun cabinet are a different product, so use the licensing guidance that applies to you if that is the job.

Common questions

Will my insurer accept one of these amazon.co.uk safes?
We cannot see your schedule, so we cannot say yes. None of the twelve listings shows EN 14450, EN 1143-1, Sold Secure, or AiS. Howden warns that the wrong rating or a poor install can mean no claim. If they accept an uncertified box for a low cash sum, get that in writing.
Is jewellery always ten times the cash figure?
Often, and not always. The NAJ, citing an insurance surveyor, says jewellery is frequently ten times the cash rating and that the multiple can move. Lock & Key says the ten-times idea is not automatic. If your schedule names a lower limit, plan around that limit.
What is AiS approval?
AiS is the Association of Insurance Surveyors' route that many insurers use when they decide which safes they will accept. Safe Fortress describes it as a stamp on safes tested by bodies such as ECB-S, VdS, SBSC, CNPP/A2P, and LPCB. It is not a public shop. A product title on amazon.co.uk is not a plate inside the door.
What should I have ready before I phone the insurer?
Have the standard you hope to buy, or admit you have not chosen one, plus the cash and valuables you actually keep, the lock, and the floor or wall you can drill. Ask them to confirm the standard, the limits, the lock, the fixing, and the evidence. Write the reply. Dealer tables are the prompt, not the answer.
Where do firearms sit in this?
Firearms storage follows the licence and the cabinet rules that apply to certificate holders. A jewellery safe in this comparison is not that product. This page does not set out a gun-cabinet specification. If the licence names a cabinet, use that guidance and a specialist fitter.
