Security safe buying guide UK

Updated: October 2026

You are about to sort home safes on amazon.co.uk by price, and the cheapest box may still be the wrong one for a passport wallet, a lever-arch file, or a claim. This security safe buying guide UK is the order of questions. The [security safe comparison](/hub/safes-and-secure-storage/security-safe) lists twelve cabinets, from about £19.99 to £169.99. None names EN 14450 or EN 1143-1. A low price is what you pay for a lock and some privacy, not what an insurer will accept. The Products Compared editorial team checked the listings and public UK guidance on 16 October 2026. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the insurer's grade, not the litres

Ask what the policy will accept before you measure the cavity. UK guides publish the same ladder and still treat the figures as guidelines. EN 14450 S1 is commonly quoted around £2,000 cash and £20,000 of valuables. S2 is commonly quoted around £4,000 cash and £40,000 of valuables. EN 1143-1 grade 0, Eurograde 0, is commonly quoted around £6,000 cash and £60,000 of valuables. London Safes and Secured by Design both say the insurer decides. Which standard does the policy name, what cash and valuables limits sit on it, and does cover depend on fixing? If the answer names S2 or a Eurograde, use the guide to security safes for home insurance. A NALULI cabinet here is about 22 kg and still names no grade. A certificate is a test, not a shipping weight.

Match the inside of the safe to the paper, not the title litres

Passports and a few cards need a shallow tray. An 8.6 litre Yale YSV/200/DB2, around £30.43, can hold that pile if you are not also storing folders. A4 paper is 210 mm by 297 mm, and a lever-arch file is larger than the sheet. SimplySafes uses a rule of thumb of about 32 cm in one direction and about 29 cm of depth before a folder is comfortable. Title litres ignore door thickness, hinges, and the shelf. Shelves steal depth. A WASJOYE model titled around 67 litres drew a UK review saying lever-arch files do not fit. The same family also disagrees between about 67 litres and about 60 litres. Trust the millimetres. The 43 litre Amazon Basics cabinet, around £75.25, is a larger uncertified cavity.

Lock, fixing, and fire are three different tests

A keypad, a key, and a fingerprint reader change who can open the door. They do not change the steel. If several adults need a code, start with the keypad or key comparison and keep an override key outside the cabinet. A key-only lock avoids batteries and leaves you with copies, a lost key, or a light mechanism one owner reported picking. Preference is not a grade. Fixing is the second test. An unbolted light box can leave with the contents. Concrete, brick, or a joist is the surface UK fixing guides describe. Plasterboard, loose floorboards, and a rented wall you must not drill are reasons to pause. Fire is the third test. De Raat treats fire testing as separate from a burglary grade. EN 15659 is a fire standard. Fireproof on AltiKeep and Aprxuvot titles is not that standard. One AltiKeep buyer reported accessories missing from the parcel.

What the amazon.co.uk price bands are buying

Each band is still an uncertified keypad or key cabinet. About £20 to £58 buys the small end, including the 8.6 litre Yale at £30.43. About £75 to £122 buys mid-size boxes such as the 43 litre Amazon Basics at £75.25, where you pay for more cavity, a heavier door claim, and a large review count. About £144 to £170 reaches the 52 litre NALULI biometric cabinet at £169.99. The extra money buys a fingerprint claim, more litres, and more mass. It does not buy a named EN plate. If the insurer has named a standard, the map points off this uncertified shelf. If the insurer is silent and you want a place for passports that visitors cannot open, the bands are what this set actually sells.

Common questions

What should I decide before I look at safes on amazon.co.uk?
Decide the insurer's standard, the cash and valuables limits, and whether the safe must be fixed, then the internal size of the thickest item, then the lock. Price comes after those three. Sorting by price first answers a different question from the one a claim will ask.
Is EN 14450 S2 enough, or do I need a Eurograde?
S2 is enough only when your policy says S2. UK guides often quote it around £4,000 cash and £40,000 valuables. Eurograde 0 is EN 1143-1, often quoted around £6,000 cash and £60,000 valuables. If the wording names a Eurograde, S2 is the wrong document. The published bands are guidelines.
How big a safe do I need for passports versus A4?
Passports and a few cards fit a small cavity such as the 8.6 litre Yale. A4 is 210 mm by 297 mm, and a folder needs more room than the sheet. SimplySafes suggests about 32 cm in one direction and about 29 cm of depth. Read the internal millimetres and allow for a shelf.
Does a heavier box mean a higher grade?
No. Mass makes a cabinet harder to walk off with, and a grade is a named test. The NALULI is about 22 kg and the listing still does not show EN 14450 or EN 1143-1. A Yale at 3.6 kg is easier to carry, which is why fixing matters. Ask for the standard, not the shipping weight.
Do I have to bolt it down if I only want privacy from children?
A bolted floor is more than that job requires, though an unbolted light safe can still be carried out of the house. UK fixing advice treats concrete, brick, or a joist as the surfaces that hold. Plasterboard does not. If a policy later depends on fixing, ask before you rely on the box.
