EN 1143-1 Grade 0 vs BS 7558: two tests, two objects

Updated: 16 October 2026

You are choosing between a eurograde safe and a gun cabinet, and EN 1143-1 Grade 0 vs BS 7558 is the comparison that decides it. Grade 0 is a burglary grade on a safe standard. BS 7558 is the cabinet the Firearms Security Handbook names for a new cabinet in a dwelling. A pistol box is neither. Our [grade 0 gun safe comparison](/hub/safes-and-secure-storage/grade-0-gun-safe) holds five amazon.co.uk rows that cite neither standard. The Products Compared editorial team used the public Grade 0 figure, the handbook, and Secured by Design’s note on Sold Secure. We did not attack-test a safe. Two different objects

A eurograde safe is graded for resistance to attack. A gun cabinet is firearm storage, with a construction and a fixing the handbook can point at. Shops put both under gun safe. You can keep a firearm in a graded safe if the force and the insurer accept that safe. You do not get a Grade 0 result from a cabinet standard alone. Better for a tool attack is a eurograde question. Better as the handbook’s usual new cabinet is a BS 7558 question. The buying order is on the buying guide. A £134 pistol box and a £735 safe that names a grade do not share a test.

What Grade 0 is for

On the public tables of BS EN 1143-1:2019, Grade 0 sits at 30 resistance units. That is the tool attack, not a cash limit and not a time in minutes. A public table is not the certificate for the safe in your basket. An indicative seller line is £6,000 cash or £60,000 valuables. Burton states about 65 kg, and the Ranger N5 snippet states 105 kg and grade 0. The cash line is the seller’s statement, not your policy. The Magno-Safe M 540 E listing text says EN 1143-1 grade 0 at £735.11, and it is not a row in this set.

What a gun cabinet is for

For a new cabinet, the handbook points to BS 7558:1992, fixed and out of easy view. That does not mean the cabinet scored 30 resistance units. Sold Secure SS302 Bronze is described by Secured by Design as meeting BS 7558:1992. Bronze is not a nickname for Grade 0. A Brattonsound ST5 at £270.55 with a BS 7558-style claim can sit near pistol-box money. The claim is what you verify. In a mobile home or caravan, paragraphs 2.25 to 2.28 name a BS 7558 cabinet or EN 1143-1 Grade 1, 2 or 3. Grade 0 is not in that list. Bolts and cables are on the anchoring page.

Labels that are not either standard

EN 14450 S1 or S2 is a lighter scale, not EN 1143-1 Grade 0. S2 is not a translation of 30 resistance units. The Ranger N5 snippet cites German weapons law beside 105 kg and grade 0. That is not approval under the Firearms Act 1968. UK certificate storage is on the certificate page. Gun Safes rank and a fingerprint are not either standard. The five listings cite neither. The W90’s UK review is about habits.

Common questions

What does EN 1143-1 Grade 0 test?
It is the entry burglary grade on that safe standard. Public tables of the 2019 edition put Grade 0 at 30 resistance units, from the standard’s tool attack. It is not a cash limit and not a gun-cabinet specification. A shop that prints a number without the standard has not shown you the test. You need the certificate for the model, not a header that says grade.
What does BS 7558 require of a new cabinet?
The Firearms Security Handbook points new cabinets to BS 7558:1992, fixed to the building and sited out of easy view. That is a construction and fixing standard for firearm storage. It does not mean the cabinet scored 30 resistance units on EN 1143-1. If you need the handbook’s usual new cabinet, this is the name to look for. If you need a graded safe for an insurer’s cash line, you are on the other test.
Is Sold Secure Bronze a route to BS 7558?
Secured by Design describes Sold Secure SS302 Bronze as meeting BS 7558:1992. Read it as a route written against the cabinet standard, not as a second name for Grade 0. Bronze on one page and eurograde on another are two offers. Ask which standard the model was assessed to. A Bronze label does not by itself put 30 resistance units on the safe.
Is EN 14450 S1 or S2 the same as Grade 0?
No. EN 14450 S1 and S2 sit on a lighter standard. Grade 0 sits on EN 1143-1. A seller who treats S2 as the same as Grade 0 is mixing the documents. Ask for the standard number. If the answer is only a shop grade or a star rating, you do not yet know which test was done. The five boxes in this set cite neither standard.
Why do dealers talk about £6,000 cash cover?
Some sellers state an indicative line beside a Grade 0 safe. The line used here is £6,000 cash or £60,000 valuables, and it is a seller statement. The handbook does not publish it. Your insurer’s policy is what would pay, and it may say something else, or nothing. Do not turn 30 resistance units into that cash figure. They are not the same measurement.
Does a German weapons-law sentence approve a cabinet in the UK?
No. A Ranger listing that states 105 kg and grade 0 and cites German weapons law is not citing the Firearms Act 1968. The citation does not approve the cabinet for a force in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. UK certificate storage is the condition on your certificate and the handbook’s cabinet line. Treat the German sentence as a claim about another country’s rules.
