Grade 0 gun safe: what the name should mean before you pay

Updated: 16 October 2026

You are looking at a grade 0 gun safe because a listing, a dealer, or a certificate conversation used three names as if they were the same object. They are not. Grade 0 is a burglary grade on EN 1143-1. The cabinet the Firearms Security Handbook usually names for a new home is BS 7558, fixed to the building. The five rows on our [grade 0 gun safe comparison](/hub/safes-and-secure-storage/grade-0-gun-safe) are pistol boxes and one time-lock safe from £133.98 to £280, and none cites either standard. The Products Compared editorial team read the listings on 16 October 2026 and did not run an attack test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What Grade 0 actually certifies

Grade 0 is the entry grade on the public tables of BS EN 1143-1:2019, at 30 resistance units. That figure is the tool attack in the standard, not a cash sum. The certificate belongs to a tested model. Certified examples are often 60 kg and up. Burton’s page states about 65 kg and a seller line of £6,000 cash or £60,000 valuables. That line is not a statute and not your policy. Outside this set, the Burg-Wächter Magno-Safe M 540 E listing text says EN 1143-1 grade 0 at £735.11.

The cabinet the handbook names

BS 7558:1992 is the cabinet the handbook points to for a new cabinet, fixed and out of easy view. Secured by Design describes Sold Secure SS302 Bronze as meeting that standard. Bronze is not Grade 0. EN 14450 S1 or S2 is a lighter scale. A Ranger listing that states 105 kg and grade 0 beside German weapons-law wording is not the Firearms Act 1968. The two tests are on the Grade 0 versus gun cabinet page. The Brattonsound ST5, at £270.55, carries a BS 7558-style claim and is outside this set. For a certificate, use the certificate storage page and phone the force.

What these boxes are

Prices on 15 October 2026 run from the TOPMEDA GS202 at £133.98 and the BILLCONCH BG-J11 at £134.43, through the TOPINCN box at £143.66 and the KEhtu case at £192.82, to the Genie Hand W90 at £280. Three pistol boxes are about 8 cm high. The TOPINCN is 41 × 25 × 14 cm and is labelled both as a portable box and as Cabinet Safes. The W90 is a free-standing time-lock safe of 25 litres and 10.6 kg. Gun Safes rank is a shop position, not a grade. Two rows have no review line.

The five checks before you pay

If the listing does not name EN 1143-1 Grade 0 or BS 7558, it has failed this page’s test. A fingerprint is not a resistance grade. These boxes are 3.32 kg to 10.6 kg, against Grade 0 examples often at 60 kg and up. The BILLCONCH has a cable, the TOPMEDA a cable and four screws, and the W90 is free standing. Flat-battery methods are USB-C and a key, a 9 V port, or, on the KEhtu, a claim that names no port. England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland do not share one air-weapon rule. Phone licensing if the gun is on a certificate, and the insurer if Grade 0 was for cash cover. Bolts are on the anchoring page.

Common questions

What does Grade 0 mean on a UK safe?
On the public tables of BS EN 1143-1:2019, Grade 0 is 30 resistance units. That is the entry burglary grade on that safe standard. It is not a cash sum, and it is not the handbook’s usual name for a new gun cabinet. A product title that says gun safe does not award the grade. You need the standard named for the model, and a certificate you can tie to that model, before you treat the box as Grade 0.
Is Grade 0 the standard on a firearm certificate?
The handbook does not set EN 1143-1 Grade 0 as the house standard. For a new cabinet it points to BS 7558:1992, fixed and discreet. A force can still accept a graded safe in a particular case. That is a question for licensing, not a rule this page can print as universal. If you are buying for a certificate, phone the force before you treat a Grade 0 headline as the condition.
What is BS 7558, and how is Sold Secure Bronze related?
BS 7558:1992 is the cabinet standard the handbook names for a new cabinet. Secured by Design describes Sold Secure SS302 Bronze as meeting that standard. Bronze is a route written against the cabinet test, not another name for EN 1143-1 Grade 0. If one page says Bronze and another says eurograde, you are being offered two different tests. Ask which document the model was assessed to, and keep the answer with the receipt.
Why are the amazon.co.uk boxes in this set about £130 to £280?
Because they are pistol boxes and one time-lock safe, not certified Grade 0 units. Prices on 15 October 2026 run from £133.98 to £192.82 for the boxes and £280 for the Genie Hand W90. Certified examples are often 60 kg and up, and a named grade 0 listing outside this set, the Magno-Safe M 540 E, is at £735.11. The low price is a clue that the standard was never claimed.
When should you phone licensing or the insurer?
Phone firearms licensing when the firearm or shotgun is on a certificate, or when you are about to apply, and ask what that force expects to see. Phone the insurer when you wanted Grade 0 for cash or valuables cover, because the £6,000 and £60,000 lines in dealer copy are seller statements, not your policy. The boxes in this set cite neither EN 1143-1 nor BS 7558. A fingerprint will not answer either call.
