How to join PVC pipe: waste, a duct, or clear tube

Updated: October 2026

The cement tin is the first thing you reached for, and it may be the wrong joint. How to join PVC pipe depends on the object you bought: rigid solvent-weld waste, a 100 mm duct with female ends, or clear flexible tube. Cement, a male duct connector, and a hose barb do not substitute for one another. Sizes are on the [PVC pipe comparison](/hub/rods-and-pipes/pvc-pipe). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. If you are still choosing the pipe, use the [PVC pipe buying guide](/hub/rods-and-pipes/pvc-pipe/sub/pvc-pipe-buying-guide) first.

Identify the pipe before you open the cement

eco-filtration is the only waste length here: black, 25 mm outside, wall about 2.5 mm, 1 m, cement not included. It is not a licence to cement it into a 32 mm or 40 mm socket. JDP's examples for those nominal sizes are about 36 mm, 43 mm, and 56 mm outside. The size check stays on solvent weld waste pipe. Kair and Fantronix are 100 mm inside, 350 mm, 1 mm wall, with female ends. A male fitting pushes in. Kesote, Dcizlont, and TA-VIGOR are 7 mm, 8 mm, and 9 mm inside, and they go on a barb of that bore. BroLuka's title reads as a short rigid stick, and the components line says natural latex rubber tubing. Do not cement that parcel.

Cut square, then solvent-weld only a rigid system

Cut the rigid waste square. Deburr the inside and chamfer the outer edge so the pipe enters without scraping the cement away. Dry-fit first. If it will not go home, the diameters do not match, and more cement will not fix that. Kalsi's sequence for solvent-weld waste is to clean pipe and socket, cement both, push home with about a quarter turn, and hold so the pipe does not creep out. Match the cement to the plastic. PVC-U and ABS are not the same tin. Kayflow says you can handle a joint after about five minutes. Kalsi says follow the tin, and water is often hours away. Do not merge those into one number. At work, solvent cement sits under COSHH. HSE CIS27 says ventilate and do not spray if a brush will do. This set has no WRAS number.

Push the duct, do not glue the sleeve

Kair's bullet says both ends are female and that you cut the 350 mm length with a hacksaw. Fantronix is the same nominal sleeve. A male connector or the fan spigot pushes into that female end. If the pipe arrived oval, which UK reviews report on both brands, ease it round before you force it. Gluing a 1 mm wall is how the sleeve splits. Do not claim an extract rate because the sleeve went on. Approved Document F wants rigid duct kept to 2.0 m where practical, and a 350 mm offcut does not prove that rate. If the run has to meet that document, use a ventilation fitter.

Barb and clamp the clear tube

Cut the clear tube square. A crushed end will not pass the barb. Match the inside diameter: 7 mm on Kesote, 8 mm on Dcizlont, 9 mm on TA-VIGOR. An outside-diameter reading chooses the wrong tail. ILS's sequence is a square cut, no petroleum lubricant, warm water if the tube is tight, then a clamp on the smooth wall about 3 mm to 5 mm behind the last barb. Do not solvent-weld the coil into a 25 mm socket. If the fitting is rigid, the other pipe here is the black 1 m length, compared on flexible or rigid PVC pipe.

Common questions

Do I use the same cement on waste pipe, duct, and clear tube?
No. Solvent cement is for rigid PVC of one system, such as the 25 mm eco-filtration waste into a matching socket, with cement matched to that plastic. The 100 mm ducts join by pushing a male fitting into the female end. The clear tubes go on a barb. Cement on flexible vinyl or on a 1 mm duct is the wrong joint, not a stronger one.
How do I cut the pipe square?
Mark the cut and keep the blade square to the pipe so the end sits fully in the socket or over the barb. A hacksaw is what Kair's duct bullet names. On a soft coil, scissors are what Kesote buyers use, but a crushed end will not pass a barb until you recut it square.
How do the female ends on the 100 mm ducts join?
A male connector or the fan spigot pushes into the female end. Kair and Fantronix both state that arrangement on a 350 mm pipe with a 1 mm wall. If the pipe arrived oval, ease it round before you force it. Screws are a merchant method and are not in these boxes. Do not cement the sleeve.
How do I get a small tube onto a barb?
Match the barb to the inside diameter, cut square, and soften a tight tube with warm water rather than oil. Push past the barbs and clamp on the smooth wall just behind the last barb, about 3 mm to 5 mm, which is the spacing ILS describes. Kesote is the 7 mm bore, Dcizlont the 8 mm, and TA-VIGOR the 9 mm. A kink at the tail still leaks.
Is solvent cement a COSHH issue at work?
Yes, when you use it at work. HSE CIS27 tells you to ventilate and not to spray if a brush will do. At home the same habits apply: a small brush, the lid on, and no cement near food or drinking water. Cure time stays on the tin. Do not treat one brand’s five-minute handling note as permission to run water.
When should a plumber or a fitter take over?
When the joint is part of a soil stack, a buried drain, a sewer connection, a wholesome supply, a condensate line the boiler maker specifies, or an extract that has to meet Approved Document F. A single 25 mm waste joint or a 350 mm fan sleeve is a short piece. It does not prove the rest of the run.
