Waterproof gloves for wet work

Updated: 17 October 2026

The pair says waterproof, and the job might be a wet border, a jerry can, or cement wash. Waterproof gloves for wet work, as the Health and Safety Executive uses the phrase, are a skin question first. This page says when you can stay with the latex gloves in our set and when you should leave. It does not rank them. Listings are on our [waterproof work gloves](/hub/protective-clothing/waterproof-work-gloves) comparison. The Products Compared editorial team used HSE guidance and amazon.co.uk fields from 15 October 2026. This is not a chemical test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Wet work is a skin risk, not a product type

HSE describes wet work as prolonged or frequent water contact, often with soaps and detergents, and treats it as a cause of dermatitis. HSG262 pictures risky wet work as more than about two hours' contact, or about 20 to 40 hand washes a day. That is a description, not a statutory number. The waterproofing standard HSE cites is EN 374-2. A title that says waterproof is not that sentence. These tables print neither EN 374-2 nor EN 511. EN 511's water result is pass (1) or fail (0). Cromwell's guide describes about 30 minutes submerged. SATRA describes the ISO 15383 check as about five minutes. Neither time appears here. KAYGO KG150, at £7.98, is the listing that limits itself: full immersion is not required. That is ordinary wet handling, not EN 374-2. The missing-code check is on the waterproof work gloves buying guide.

Chemicals, cement, fuel, and solvent are a different glove

Chemicals need EN 374-3, plus breakthrough time for that substance. EN 374-2 and EN 374-3 are not two names for one mark. A waterproof title does not supply a breakthrough time. Wet cement is its own hazard. HSE puts it at about pH 12 to 13, able to burn and to cause dermatitis. Gloves for long contact should suit high pH and should not sit loose, where cement is trapped at the wrist. None of these spec tables show a high-pH claim or an EN 374 chemical code. Baratec reviews that mention concreting are wear comments, not cement PPE. If there is a safety data sheet, or the liquid is fuel, solvent, oil, or wet cement, stop. A blade, a chainsaw, or electricity is outside this category too.

This set is latex, and allergy is a reason to leave

These gloves are natural rubber latex, not a nitrile range. HSE says an existing latex allergy means no latex gloves, single-use or reusable. Proteins can cause dermatitis and asthma, and, more rarely, anaphylaxis. Do not trial a pair from this capture to see if the coating is mild. KAYGO says nitrile free and powder free. One buyer with eczema reports a strong skin reaction. That is one review, and it is enough to leave. This set does not contain a non-latex alternative. Do not claim these gloves prevent dermatitis. If skin reacts, see a GP or occupational health, and tell the employer when the gloves are work PPE. Wash steps and liner choice will not make an allergy safe. Those sit on waterproof work glove size and care and thermal or unlined waterproof work gloves.

When you can stay with these gloves

Stay for rain, wet tools, garden water, car washing, and light building if you respect the listing's limit. KAYGO's line is the clearest: not a full dunk. You are trusting a product field, not an EN 374-2 or EN 511 pass. Leave if the task has a safety data sheet, the liquid is fuel, solvent, or cement, or the hazard is a blade, a chainsaw, or electricity. Leave if the site must document a code these tables do not print, if your skin reacts, or if you have a latex allergy. Where PPE is still required, the employer supplies it free, including for limb (b) workers under the 2022 amendment. These tables show no UKCA field. If you are on the exit, do not call this category chemical protection.

Common questions

What does HSE mean by wet work?
Prolonged or frequent water contact, often with soaps, which can cause dermatitis. HSG262 describes more than about two hours, or about 20 to 40 hand washes a day. That is not a statutory number. The standard HSE cites is EN 374-2.
Is a waterproof work glove automatically EN 374-2?
No. These tables print neither EN 374-2 nor an EN 511 water digit. KAYGO at £7.98 says full immersion is not required. You may buy a pair for ordinary rain if you accept an uncertified claim. You cannot tell a site the glove meets a code that is absent.
Can I use them for solvent, fuel, or wet cement?
No. Those need data for the substance. Wet cement is about pH 12 to 13, and the glove should suit that and should not trap slurry at a loose wrist. A concreting review is not a chemical test. EN 374-3, not a rain title, is the chemical side of the standard.
What if I have a latex allergy?
Do not wear these gloves. HSE rules out latex if you are already allergic. This set is latex, and KAYGO's nitrile-free line confirms the material. Choose a non-latex glove for the job.
Do these gloves prevent dermatitis?
No. Wet work can cause it, and nothing here claims prevention. The glove can be part of the problem if it leaks, traps cement, or is latex and you react. Stop if your skin reacts, and see a GP or occupational health.
Why mention EN 511 if I only want rain kept out?
Because a waterproof field is not a penetration test. EN 511 is pass or fail, and guides describe about five minutes or about 30 minutes of soaking. These listings show no digit. Do not call an uncertified rain pair EN 511.
Does my employer have to pay for gloves?
Where the assessment still requires PPE, the employer supplies it free, including for limb (b) workers. Most new workplace PPE needs UKCA or CE marking and English instructions. These tables show no UKCA field. A gardening pair you buy yourself is not that duty.
