Rope saw for high branches

Updated: 16.10.2026

A limb over the lawn is why people look up a rope saw for high branches. A throw-line and a pocket chain can keep you on the ground for a small limb you can see, or leave the wood hung up if you pull from the wrong place. The reachable stroke is on [how to use a wire saw](/hub/power-saws/wire-saw/sub/wire-saw-how-to-use). Lengths and prices are on the [wire saw comparison](/hub/power-saws/wire-saw). What cutting from the ground actually means

From the ground means you stay on the path, the chain meets a small limb you can see, and the fall misses your head, glass and the neighbour’s car. UK reviews of the longer pocket chain describe a weighted line thrown over a limb, then a pull from below. The branch may swing, hang in a fork, or drop straight. The Health and Safety Executive treats aerial tree work as hazardous and points to the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and to LOLER where lifting equipment is used. A powered chainsaw off the ground needs training, with two people and rescue cover. An 8 inch cable cannot do this job. Who each pick is for is on best wire saw.

The chain in this set, and the rope the box leaves out

Skyocean’s specification row says 158 g, while a bullet says 0.44 lb, about 200 g, so do not average the two. The included line is a pouch, not a rope. Reviewers who cut overhead added their own cord. HJUWANG’s named sizes are branches around 75 mm, rose bushes, and allotment stems around 8 inches as a struggle. Keep that 24 inch pair for wood you can walk up to. FamilyMall’s 8 inch blade row, and the 70 cm cables at about £3.39–£5.99, do not leave you handles on the ground under a high limb. Wire saw or pocket chainsaw separates cable from chain.

Jams, one-sided teeth, and where you stand

In the first 50 Skyocean UK reviews, people jammed the chain, used two operators, or had not tried the tool. More than one review says the teeth are on one side. Fallen wood in those notes is about 6–8 inches. Electrical Safety First’s pole-saw page says to keep people clear, stay off lines, and avoid wet or wind. That 15 metres is their figure for powered pole saws. A hand chain is not a reason to go closer.

When you stop and hire someone

HSE’s chainsaw pages cover training and protective equipment for a powered saw. They are not a certificate for a hand chain in your garden. PUWER 1998 can apply to work equipment, including handsaws, at work. HSE describes a domestic-household exception. This is not legal advice. Paid work is that duty, not a pouch at about £18. A protected tree, or one in a conservation area, is a planning question this page does not answer. If the limb is small, live and clear, and you can throw a line then stand aside, the 36 inch chain is the listing reviewers used that way. Otherwise hire someone who does tree work.

Common questions

Can you cut a high branch without a ladder?
You can stay on the ground for a small limb if a thrown line seats a chain and you pull from outside the drop zone. UK reviews of the 36 inch Skyocean chain describe that, with cord the pouch did not include. It is not a method for a large, dead, or hung-up limb, and the wood may not fall cleanly. If you need a ladder, stop and hire.
Which listing in this set is long enough?
The Skyocean chain, B075JFPZZY, has a 36 inch row, about £17.99, and 4.3 from 4,178 reviews on the stored listing. The HJUWANG 24 inch pair at about £8.99 has weaker high-limb evidence. FamilyMall’s 8 inch cable and the 70 cm cables are the wrong length for a limb you cannot reach from the path.
What do you have to add that the box does not include?
The Skyocean included line is a pouch, not a rope that will reach a high limb. Reviewers added their own cord, and some threw a weighted line over the branch. You also need a clear drop zone, gloves, and eye protection. The 158 g row is the tool’s weight, not a throwing weight.
Why do one-sided teeth matter overhead?
More than one Skyocean review says the teeth are on one side, so the chain cuts only when that face is on the wood. Overhead you often cannot see which face meets the bark. The smooth side skates, or the teeth stand up and jam. Light pressure is what finished cuts in those reviews describe. A hard yank closes the kerf.
Where should you stand when the limb comes down?
Stand where the limb cannot swing or drop onto you, and keep people, pets, and glass out of that area before you pull. Do not stand under the cut to keep the chain moving. Two people, which some reviews used to steady the angle, both need an agreed step-back. If you cannot see the fall, stop.
When is a pole saw or a tree surgeon the better idea?
A pole saw is a different tool. Electrical Safety First’s page for powered pole saws says to keep people clear, stay away from power lines, and avoid wet or windy weather. That 15 metres is from that page, not a hand-chain test. Hire a tree surgeon for a large, dead, cracked, or hung-up limb, or for wood over a building, a road, or a line.
