How to use a scroll saw

Updated: 16 October 2026

You have a new scroll saw on a UK bench, and the first cut is the one that usually snaps the blade. Unplug, fit the blade with the teeth pointing down, tension it until the side flex is small, then start the motor before the wood touches the blade. This page, from the Products Compared editorial team on 16 October 2026, is that everyday setup for the listings in our [scroll saw comparison](/hub/power-saws/scroll-saw). We did not run a lab test. A qualifying amazon.co.uk purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. What follows is one outline cut, and the point where you return the saw.

Unplug and fit the blade

Unplug before you touch the blade, including when the listing mentions a foot switch. A foot pedal on the Einhell Vario is an extra socket, not a reason to leave the plug in. PUWER 1998 applies when the saw is work equipment. It does not automatically apply to a householder. Fit the teeth pointing down. The saw cuts on the downstroke and holds the work on the table. Teeth up lift the wood. On the Dremel MS20 the blade is the maker’s own, about 4 inches, not a standard 5 inch plain-end. On the TC-SS 406E, Einhell’s UK page allows cross-pin and pinless. Seat the blade, then check tension with the power off.

Tension and how hard to feed

Tension until side flex is small. A loose blade wanders, then snaps. About 1–2 mm of sideways flex, or a plucked high note, is a teaching rule of thumb, not a figure on these listings. If the Einhell tension screw does nothing, stop. That fault is in the UK returns for the TC-SS 406E. Feed so the teeth cut. You steer the wood. Start the motor first, then bring the wood to the blade. Starting with the wood already forced in is how blades kink. On a tight curve, cut into the scrap, then come back to the line. Twisting the blade to make the corner snaps it. Eye protection stays on. If the curve is an internal opening, follow the rethread on scroll saw internal cuts.

Hold-down, blower, and dust

The hold-down keeps thin stock from lifting on the upstroke. Set it so it touches the wood lightly and still lets you turn. Einhell’s UK description of the TC-SS 406E includes one. Clamp or bolt a light saw first. The Dremel is 1.75 kg. A table that walks will snap a blade even when the tension was right. Use the blower to see the line, and a port when you have one. The TC-SS 406E states a 36 mm port. Dremel reviews mention a vacuum underneath. HSE WIS23 sets workplace limits of 3 mg/m³ for hardwood and 5 mg/m³ for softwood. A householder is not that duty-holder. Extract the dust in a flat anyway.

Speed, practice, and when to stop

Where a range is stated, use a slower speed for plastic and thin cuts. Katsu prints 400 to 1,600 strokes a minute. The Bucktool bullet prints 550 to 1,600. The TC-SS row states no range. Do not use the Dremel’s 2.25 RPM row as a setting. Practise the first lines on scrap of the same thickness. Stop when the motor is dead or the tension screw does nothing. On the Katsu 100149, one of two UK reviews says the motor died on the third use. On the TC-SS 406E, one saw failed within 45 minutes. On the Bucktool, threads stripped after 23 days. Those are returns under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. A sheet or a worktop is the wrong tool, on scroll saw or jigsaw. Throat and blades are on the scroll saw buying guide.

Common questions

Which way do the teeth point?
Point the teeth down, towards the table. The blade then cuts on the downstroke and helps hold the wood down. Teeth upwards lift the work. Check the direction with the saw unplugged, before you set the tension. The same rule applies on the Dremel pin-end blades and on a plain-end blade in the Einhell or the Bucktool.
How tight should the blade be?
Tight enough that side flex is small. A loose blade wanders and snaps. So does a blade you twist through a tight curve. About 1–2 mm of flex, or a high note when the blade is plucked, is a workshop rule of thumb, not a figure from these listings. If the tension screw does not change the flex, stop and return the saw.
Do I unplug the saw to change a blade if it has a switch?
Yes. A switch, or a foot-pedal socket, can be left on by mistake. Pull the plug before you release the clamps, including every later blade change. Put the plug back in only when the teeth point down, the tension is set, and your hands are off the blade.
How hard should I push the wood?
Let the teeth cut. Start the motor, then bring the wood to the blade. Forcing the wood into a stopped blade bends and snaps it. On a tight corner, cut into the waste first, then follow the line. UK reviews of the Dremel describe blades bending when a tight turn is forced. Steer the wood. Do not twist the blade.
When is a fault a return rather than a home repair?
A dead motor, or a tension screw that does not tension the blade, is a return under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. In this set that includes a Katsu motor dead on the third use, an Einhell screw that did nothing, and Bucktool threads stripped after 23 days. A blade you snapped by twisting a corner is a technique fault. Correct that one on scrap.
