What the compound KS 216 M can cross-cut

Compound here means the head tilts and the turntable swings, without a rail that pulls the blade towards you. Part 610216380 at £139.00 is 216 mm, 240 V, with an 1100 W row, PCL, and bevel from -2° to 47°. The bullets do not mention a slide, and the kit reviews say there is no pull function. Listed weight is 8.7 kg. A 69 mm architrave is a chop-saw job if the height clears the blade. The raw files do not publish a depth for the KS 216 M, so unplug the saw, lower the blade, and see whether the offcut sits in the fence. The Lasercut at £129.82 and the £224.99 kit are the same class. Neither grows a pull stroke because you paid more.

What the KGS 254 M slide changes

The KGS 254 M, part 613254000, at £279.98 has the clearest capacity copy. Bullets describe a pull, 92 mm at 90° and 47 mm at 45°. Metabo UK publishes 305 × 92 mm at 90° for that family. That 305 mm figure is cross-cut width, not the blade diameter. The blade in the box is 254×30 mm with 48 teeth. On a 244 mm shelf, the KS 216 M means cutting from both sides and hoping the kerfs meet. The KGS bullets say the slide takes that piece in one pass if you support both ends. PCL does not add millimetres of capacity. One UK review, inside 4.6 from 198 ratings, mentions a Euro plug and a weak depth stop. The weight row says 17 g. The title says 1800 W and the power row says 1450 W, in line with Metabo UK's S1 figure.

Bench space, mass, and the price difference

The KS 216 M listing is 8.7 kg and about 52 cm long. The KGS 254 M needs room behind the fence for the rails to travel. A slider that cannot pull fully is a compound saw you paid slider money for. The price gap is £139.00 against £279.98, about £141. That premium buys the pull, the larger blade, the quoted 92 mm depth, and a review sample the compact PCL listing does not have. It does not promise a BS 1363 plug in every carton. If every board fits under a 216 mm chop, the compact saw is the coherent choice. If one regular job is a wide panel, the £141 is cheaper than a second saw later.

Choose the slider when the board exceeds one chop

Buy the KGS 254 M when a piece you cut often is wider than one pass of the 216 mm blade. Buy the KS 216 M part 610216380 at £139.00 when the offcut fits under the parked blade. Tall skirting is a depth problem, on the skirting guide. The best Metabo mitre saw page names one saw per job.

Common questions

Is the KS 216 M a sliding mitre saw?
The bullets describe a compact chop and mitre saw. They do not describe a pull or a slide. Reviews on the kit version say there is no pull function. Treat every KS 216 M in this set, including the Lasercut and the kit, as a compound chop saw. Width beyond one chop needs a different saw.
When is the KGS 254 M the one to buy?
When the board is too wide for that single chop, or when you want a listed depth of 92 mm at 90° and 47 mm at 45°. The amazon.co.uk price in this file is £279.98, with 4.6 from 198 ratings. You still inspect the plug and you still prove the depth stop, because a UK review flagged both.
Can I just cut wide boards from both sides on the compact saw?
You can turn a narrow piece and meet in the middle. On a wide shelf the two kerfs often step. That is reasonable for a one-off offcut, and a poor plan if wide boards are the normal job.
Does the extra money change the plug or the dust?
The slider costs about £141 more in these shelf prices. Both families have had non-UK plug comments on at least one listing, and both rely on a chip bag rather than a factory extraction system that would settle a COSHH assessment. Pay the difference for width and the quoted depth, then check the carton.
Where does the KGS 305 M fit?
It is a larger blade class, listed at 18.6 kg, and it is outside this either-or. The 230 V version is £312.88. Its bullets do not quote the 92 mm depth and do not describe the pull as clearly as the KGS 254 M. Confirm those points on Metabo UK if 305 mm is what you need. The 110 V version is a site saw.
Will PCL on the compact saw match the slider's accuracy?
PCL is a shadow of the blade on both the current KS 216 M and the KGS 254 M. It helps you place the cut. Square still comes from the fence and the stops. A compact saw with a true 0° will mitre trim cleanly. It will not cross-cut a wider board because the shadow is easy to see.
