Makita cordless saw buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You already own a Makita pack, and amazon.co.uk is showing blue saws that are not all Makita. Some are 165 mm circular bodies, two are reciprocating saws, and one is a 15 cm pruning head. This Makita cordless saw buying guide is the order to use before you sort that grid by stars or by the £39.99 price. The [Makita cordless saw comparison](/hub/power-saws/makita-cordless-saw) holds the eleven listings checked on 20 October 2026. Here you decide the cut, the platform and the box. Peter F. used those listings and Makita UK figures, not a lab cut. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Sort the cut before you sort the price

A circular saw cuts a straight line in sheet, decking or studs. A reciprocating saw plunges through pallets and pipe. A mini chainsaw is a third tool: the KIESBOHR CSE002 is a 15 cm head at £54.99, 4.5 from 393 reviews, for branch piles, not plywood. Makita UK states 57 mm at 90° for the 165 mm DSS610. A notch around a fixed post is a reciprocating cut. The OHAISFELA states a 20 mm stroke. The Builrand does not. Awards sit on the best Makita cordless saw page.

Match the pack, then the name on the housing

The DSS610Z is an 18 V LXT bare body. The HS301DZ is a 12 V CXT bare body, and older UK reviews still call that platform 10.8 V. An LXT pack does not fit the HS301DZ. A title that says Makita 18 V names the pack the seller hopes you own, not a Makita warranty. Makita is the brand on two circular bodies only. A panthem review at £79.99 mentions two batteries the components row omits. Amazon calls both genuine saws brushless. Makita UK does not. The warranty gap is on the compatible versus genuine page.

Treat depth, speed and the box as claims

Makita UK states 57 mm at 90° and 40 mm at 45° for the DSS610, at 3,700 revolutions per minute, with a rip fence and no battery. The HS301D is 25.5 mm at 90° on an 85 mm blade. The HS301DZ bullets print the 45° figure and omit the 90° figure. A sleeper will not fall in one pass. CISSIYOG cells claim 11,500 rpm and 8,000 rpm. That is not a UK test here. A luolety review says the saw struggled with 12 mm MDF, and that the safety switch failed. A LengSuaa review records a burn-out within four months. The £39.99 row only says Attachments.

When the cheap body stops being a saving

A compatible body is reasonable when you already own the named 18 V packs. It stops being a saving when the work needs a noise figure. Makita UK lists 94 dB(A) for the DSS610 and 86 dB(A) for the HS301D. HSE action values sit at 80 and 85 dB(A). Wood-dust limits are 5 mg/m³ for softwood and 3 mg/m³ for hardwood. Structural timber, or a wall that may hide services, belongs with someone who does that work. The circular or reciprocating saw page takes that fork.

Common questions

Is a Makita title always a Makita tool?
No. In this amazon.co.uk set only the DSS610Z and the HS301DZ carry Makita as the brand. The other nine name Makita packs, or in the HS301DZ’s case a different voltage, and they are sold under other brand fields. A blue housing and a pack code are not a Makita warranty. Check the brand line on the listing you are about to open, then decide whether a published noise figure matters for the job.
Which pack fits the DSS610Z, and which fits the HS301DZ?
The DSS610Z takes 18 V LXT packs and does not include a battery or a charger at £119.00. The HS301DZ takes 12 V CXT packs, listed at £99.95, and UK reviews warn that an 18 V LXT pack does not fit. Older reviews may still say 10.8 V for the same CXT platform. If you only own one of those systems, the other saw is the wrong card even when the two prices look close.
What depth do I need for decking?
Measure the board. Makita UK states 57 mm at 90° for the 165 mm DSS610, which covers a lot of decking and studs and does not cover a sleeper in one pass. The 85 mm HS301D is stated at 25.5 mm at 90°, so it is for thinner flooring, MDF and trim. A compatible line that prints 50 mm or 33–55 mm without a UK source should be tried on a scrap before you trust it.
Does brushless on the Amazon row mean the motor is brushless?
Not on the two genuine saws here. Makita UK does not claim a brushless motor for the DSS610 or the HS301D, and UK reviews of the DSS610Z describe a brushed motor, including a brake when you release the trigger. A brushless cell on those rows conflicts with the maker. On a third-party title the word is listing copy until you have something better than the bullet.
When should I leave this set for another Makita model?
Leave when you need a brushless 165 mm factory saw, a published reciprocating stroke around 32 mm, or vibration data for paid work. Makita UK documents the DHS680 and the DJR187 for those jobs. Neither is in this eleven-listing comparison, so this guide does not invent a shop price for them. Check the current Makita UK page and the live amazon.co.uk price before you switch.
