Circular saw guide rail for plywood sheets

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are breaking down plywood, MDF or chipboard, usually 2,440 mm by 1,220 mm, still called 8 ft by 4 ft. A 1,020 mm Evolution track, Bosch rails UK reviews put at about 70 cm, three 40 cm BlueMars sections, or a DEKOPRO fence will not rip 2,440 mm in one pass. Allow about 100 mm of rail past each end, BuildWiz’s rule of thumb, before you mark the board. Prices are on the [circular saw with guide rail comparison](/hub/power-saws/circular-saw-with-guide-rail). Products Compared used amazon.co.uk listings and UK pages on 20 October 2026. This is not a lab cut.

The sheet is longer than these guides

A full sheet is 2,440 mm by 1,220 mm. The Evolution at £116.00 lists a 1,020 mm track. UK reviews put the Bosch rails at about 70 cm. BlueMars lists three 40 cm rails, 1,200 mm before joints, which is arithmetic rather than an assembled length. Both DEKOPRO rails follow an edge, so they do not reference a pencil line. A 2,440 mm rip with about 100 mm past each end wants about 2,700 mm of rail. BuildWiz puts a one-pass rail at 2,700–2,800 mm. Support the sheet so the offcut cannot sag. The cut itself is on how to use a guide rail.

A cross-cut of the 1,220 mm side

The short side still needs overhang. About 100 mm past each end puts the rail near 1,420 mm for one pass. The included Evolution track at 1,020 mm is about 400 mm short of that rule of thumb, so you move the track and realign, or you step up to a rail in the ST1400 class. The Bosch rails at about 70 cm do not cross 1,220 mm even without overhang. Three BlueMars sections, 1,200 mm before joints, are marginal once the rail has to extend past the cut. The DEKOPRO fence can follow a factory edge only if the shoe is flat. A 165 mm review says a warped base stopped a full sheet staying straight. BlueMars depth is a second limit: 42 mm on the title and 0–45 mm in a bullet, on a 125 mm blade. An 18 mm sheet can sit in that window. A thick worktop often will not. Fence versus track is the buying guide.

A rip of the 2,440 mm side

A one-pass rip wants about 2.7–2.8 m. Toolstation lists the Evolution ST2800-G2 as two 1,400 mm tracks, 2.8 m assembled, for 8 ft by 4 ft boards, with the R185CCSX on the compatibility line. That page showed £94.99 (£79.16 ex VAT). It is an accessory, not the track in the £116.00 box, and the price will move. The kept listing does not show Festool, Makita or DeWalt fit. Joining shorter rails works when the joint is stiff and the sheet is supported, which is how Homebuilding describes 1.4 m sections. Three bolted BlueMars rails are not 2.8 m. Two careful moves of the 1,020 mm track are the method if you will not buy the extra rail.

Tear-out, MDF and dust

A 16-tooth blade, which is what the Evolution box includes, rips fast and tears veneer. A 24-tooth blade, on the DEKOPRO, Bosch and BlueMars TCT listings, is still coarse for a show face. Key Blades & Fixings, a UK seller, points track-saw users toward about 48 teeth for plywood, and 24 teeth for a faster rip. That is the seller’s advice, not a test of the Evolution blade. Face the show face down if the edge will be seen. The Evolution claims a dust-port adapter, and BlueMars lists an extractor. That port is a vacuum point, not the control system. A hob cut-out is the plunge saw comparison. If you buy through our amazon.co.uk links, tagged pcuk26-21, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

What length rips 2,440 mm in one pass?
BuildWiz’s rule of thumb is about 100 mm past each end, so a 2,440 mm rip wants about 2,700 mm. The Evolution ST2800-G2, two 1,400 mm tracks joined to 2.8 m, is named as compatible with the R185CCSX on Toolstation. It is not in the £116.00 kit. That page showed £94.99.
Can I join two shorter rails?
You can, if the joint stays straight and the sheet is supported under it. Homebuilding describes 1.4 m sections for a full sheet. Three BlueMars sections of 40 cm are 1,200 mm before joints. That is not a 2.8 m rip. Joining does not turn a DEKOPRO fence into a pencil-line guide.
Why does plywood tear with a coarse blade?
A 16-tooth or 24-tooth blade clears chips quickly and leaves a rough veneer edge. A UK blade seller suggests around 48 teeth for a plywood finish on a track saw. One Evolution user reported a clean 19 mm plywood cut with the supplied blade, and another upgraded for laminate. Put the show face down if the edge will be seen.
How do I stop the sheet sagging into the blade?
Support the middle as well as both ends, on horses, battens or foam on the floor, so the kerf cannot close as the offcut drops. A sagging sheet pinches the blade and burns the edge, which is the pattern in a BlueMars review of burned MDF.
Is MDF dust different from softwood?
At work, HSE’s limit is 5 mg/m³ for softwood dust and 3 mg/m³ for hardwood, and mixed dust uses 3 mg/m³. A dust port on the Evolution or BlueMars is only the connection for a vacuum. It does not, by itself, meet the APF 20 expectation in HSE sheet WD0.
