How to use a circular saw guide rail

Updated: 21 October 2026

You already have a kit and you want one straight cut, not a ranking. The cut goes wrong when the board sags, the guide creeps, or the depth is taken from the wrong figure. Clamp the guide, support the whole board, start with the teeth clear, and stop if the plug, cable or guard is wrong. The kits and the shelf prices are on the [circular saw with guide rail comparison](/hub/power-saws/circular-saw-with-guide-rail). The Products Compared editorial team used the listings, the Bosch manual for one model, and UK safety sources on 20 October 2026. This is not a lab cut.

Set the guide and the support before you start

Put the guide where the shoe will run, and keep the blade out of the wood until that position is fixed. On a fence kit, which is what both DEKOPRO boxes describe, the straight guide follows the edge of the timber. On a track or a short rail, clamp the guide so it cannot walk, then bring the saw to it. Evolution reviewers say clamps were often bought separately, and that ordinary clamps can foul the saw, so do a dry pass with the saw unplugged. Support the keep and the offcut on saw horses. If the offcut drops, it can close on the blade. The Bosch manual for the UniversalCirc plastic rail says not to rest the saw on a rail that hangs past the board, because the plastic cannot hold the saw. Do not paste that warning onto an Evolution track. Which box you bought is the buying guide.

Depth, bevel and the first millimetres

Set the 90° depth from the listing for the saw in your hands, with a small bite past the underside so the teeth clear the face. The Evolution lists 0–64 mm. The DEKOPRO 185 mm lists 65 mm at 90° and 43 mm at 45°. The DEKOPRO 165 mm lists 55 mm at 90° and 33 mm at 45°. The Bosch title says 53 mm, and bevel is only “Bevel capability”, so there is no second number to copy. BlueMars says 42 mm on the title and 0–45 mm in a bullet. Use the lower figure if you are unsure. Do not copy a 90° number onto a 45° cut. Start with the teeth clear of the edge, at full speed, with both hands on the saw. None of these five listings states a riving knife.

One pass along the guide

Feed steadily. If the saw labours, the depth is too ambitious for that blade, or the guide is pinching. Trim a splinter lip on the first pass only where the rail has one. The Bosch manual tells you to trim the rubber lip on the first cut of that plastic guide. That instruction is for the UniversalCirc, not the DEKOPRO fence or the Evolution track. A 16-tooth or 24-tooth blade will still mark veneer. Tooth count sits on the sheet-goods page. The Evolution claims a dust-port adapter, and BlueMars lists an extractor. Connect a vacuum if you have one. At work, sheet WD0 expects respiratory protection of at least APF 20. A port is not that system. When the offcut is free, wait until the blade stops before you lift the saw.

Stop the cut

Stop if the guard sticks. A DEKOPRO 165 mm review says the guard needed a push to close, another describes kickback, and another says the saw smoked. Unplug, or remove the Bosch battery, before you touch it. Stop for sparks, a hot smell, or a damaged plug or cable. The Evolution bullet says EU plug, so do not use an unapproved adapter. Call a professional for a structural cut, a site under PUWER or COSHH, or a hob cut-out you cannot scrap. A centre cut is the plunge saw comparison. Amazon.co.uk links use the tag pcuk26-21.

Common questions

Where do I put the guide before the blade touches?
Fix the guide, and support both pieces, before the teeth meet the wood. A DEKOPRO straight guide follows the timber edge. A track is clamped, or on the BlueMars bolted, so it cannot creep. Do an unplugged pass if ordinary clamps might foul the shoe.
What changes at 45°?
Vertical depth gets shorter. The DEKOPRO 185 mm lists 43 mm at 45° against 65 mm at 90°, and the 165 mm lists 33 mm against 55 mm. Evolution lists a 0–45° bevel beside 0–64 mm, without a separate 45° depth in our file, so read the scale on the saw. Bosch does not state the angle.
Do I trim a splinter strip on the first pass?
Trim a lip only when that rail has one. The Bosch manual for the UniversalCirc 18V-53 says to trim the rubber lip on the first cut. It does not describe the DEKOPRO fence or prove the Evolution track has the same strip.
How do I support the offcut?
Support the keep and the waste. An Evolution reviewer describes saw horses under both sides, because the blade feels exposed. If the offcut can pinch the blade, stop it dropping, and keep any second pair of hands on the waste, clear of the line. Sag in the middle of a sheet burns the cut.
What if the guard sticks or the saw sparks?
Stop and disconnect the power before you touch the guard. DEKOPRO 165 mm reviews include a guard that needed a push to close, kickback, and a saw that smoked and came apart. Do not finish the cut first. An EU plug on the Evolution listing is not something to force with a loose adapter.
When should I stop and get a professional?
Call a professional for a structural member, for a site under your employer’s PUWER and COSHH duties, and for a sink or hob cut-out you cannot scrap. These listings do not establish a plunge in the middle of a panel.
