Cut skirting with a Bosch mitre saw

Updated: 21 October 2026

Most of these saws are bought for a hallway. To cut skirting with a Bosch mitre saw you need the board to fit at 45 degrees, an external corner that is a mitre, and an internal corner that is usually a scribe because the wall is not square. The six listings in the [Bosch Professional mitre saw comparison](/hub/power-saws/bosch-professional-mitre-saw) only do that when the stated capacity covers your moulding. This page assumes you already have a slider. It does not rank them. Peter F. compared amazon.co.uk listings and Bosch GB capacity rows. There was no lab test. Will the board fit

Blade diameter is not the cut. Stand the skirting on the fence and measure it at 45 degrees. Bosch states 70 x 190 mm at 45 degrees mitre for the GCM 800 SJ, and 70 x 215 mm for the GCM305-216S. The 254 mm D models state 90 x 215 mm. The compact amazon bullets only say 270 mm horizontal. Quote the 45 degree row from Bosch. A BuildWiz guide puts rough UK ogee or torus around 119–170 mm, which is a rule of thumb. A 150 mm torus can fit the 190 mm row. A 200 mm board will not. Measure the board, including any fillet on the wall. Capacities are in the buying guide.

External corners

An external corner is a 45 degree mitre on each piece when the walls are square. You swing the saw to 45, or you flip the board and keep a left-only head. The GCM 800 SJ is 45 degrees left only, so the flip cuts both sides of a bullnose. You do not need the second tilt if the board stands on the fence. British walls are often out by a degree or two, so two perfect 45s can still leave a gap. Test-fit before you pin. Keep the face the same way up for both halves. Architrave uses the same logic: the head is the short piece and the legs are the long ones. Square and dust are on how to use a Bosch mitre saw.

Internal corners

Two 45 degree mitres on an internal corner open up when the plaster is off 90 degrees. Mitre one piece so the cut face reveals the profile, then cope that profile with a coping saw over the piece that runs through square. Undercut slightly. The piece into the corner is cut square, not mitred. A gap on the top arris is the cope. Pare that with a knife. A joiner should take over if the profile is historic, listed, or a one-off you cannot buy again. A modern primed torus is a fair first cope. Practise on an offcut. Do not mitre both sides and hope the caulk looks deliberate.

When dual bevel does nothing for this job

Skirting stood on the fence does not use the second bevel. You flip the board, and a left-only saw is enough. The GCM 800 SJ is that saw. Paying £627.87 for the GCM 305-254 D, or £619.07 before packs for the GCM 18V-254 D, buys height and a tilt, not a better 45 degree method. Dual bevel earns its place when crown is cut flat, because flipping turns the face over. A tall architrave can still miss the 190 mm row. That is capacity, not bevel. The GCM305-216S row of 215 mm at 45 degrees is not printed on the amazon listing. The mitre saw reveals the line. The coping saw follows it.

Common questions

Can the GCM 800 SJ cut UK skirting?
Yes, when the board on the fence is inside Bosch’s 70 x 190 mm at 45 degrees mitre. UK reviews use this saw for skirting and architrave. A wider board will not fit, whatever the 216 mm blade suggests. The amazon bullet only says 270 mm horizontal.
Do I mitre both sides of an internal corner?
No, not when the wall is out of square, which is the ordinary room. Mitring both sides opens the joint. Cut one piece square, mitre the other to show the profile, and cope that profile over the square piece.
What is coping, in one pass?
Coping is sawing along the profile that a 45 degree mitre has revealed, with a coping saw, so the shaped edge fits the face of the next board. You undercut slightly. The mitre saw only makes the revealing cut.
Do I need dual bevel for architrave?
Not when the architrave stands on the fence and you can flip it. Dual bevel matters for mouldings cut flat, where flipping turns the face over. A tall architrave can still miss the GCM 800 SJ’s 190 mm at 45 degrees. That limit is height.
Which way does an external corner sit on the saw?
At 45 degrees, with the face kept the same way for both halves. On a left-only saw such as the GCM 800 SJ you flip the board for the matching piece. Test-fit, because the wall is rarely a true 90 degrees.
What if the wall is not 90 degrees?
For an external corner, open or close the stop a little and test on a scrap. For an internal corner, coping tolerates a wall that is out of square better than two mitres. If the stop will not move cleanly, go back to the square before you blame the timber.
Which listing prints a wide enough 45 degree cut?
None of the amazon bullets print the 45 degree width. They print 270 mm horizontal, or 90 x 305 mm on the 254 mm D models, or nothing numerical on the GCM305-216S. The 45 degree rows here are from Bosch: 190 mm, 215 mm, or 90 x 215 mm. Measure the board against that row.
