What you actually pay for

The PST 700 E at £44.99 is 500 W, a blade and a case, and it runs from a BS 1363 socket. The PST 800 PEL at £59.00 adds pendulum and a splinter guard, at 80 mm. Those prices are a saw that cuts today. Cordless prices are bodies, from the EasySaw at £57.99 to the GST 18V-125 S at £207.12. Wickes listed the GST 18V-95 bare at £119, battery and charger separate. This set has no pack price to add. The PST 800 PEL page says a lithium battery is required, and UK reviews say there is no battery bay. Depth is on the Bosch jigsaw buying guide.

When the lead is the better Bosch jigsaw

Buy the corded PST when you have no matching battery and the work is beside a socket. You pay £44.99 or £59.00 and you are not waiting on a charger. One PST 800 PEL review put the cable at about 2.5 metres. The lead does not make the jigsaw a rip saw. The PST 700 E manual says a long straight cut in wood thicker than 40 mm may not stay accurate, and it points to a circular saw.

When the bare tool is the better buy

Buy the cordless body when the pack it uses is already charged and the socket is the awkward part. A loft, a fence and a repair away from an extension are the usual cases. Owners of the GST 18V-95 B say it fitted batteries they already had. That is one job, not a runtime for every pack size. Blue 18 V packs point at the GST 18V-95 B or a GST 18V-125. A 12 V pack points at the GST 12V-70 only. Green packs do not run a blue GST. If you own nothing, the bare sticker is the worse buy. Picks by job are on the best Bosch jigsaw page.

Green batteries and blue batteries

Home and Garden 18 V and Professional 18 V are different systems. A green battery does not fit a GST, and a blue battery does not run an EasySaw. The 12 V GST is a third system, still listed as 10.8 V. A UK review of the GST 18V-125 B says an existing Bosch charger was not compatible. Cordless does not mean less dust or less vibration. Declared figures, from 4.1 m/s² in wood on the bow-handle body to ah 10.0 m/s² on the PST 700 E, are not a daily dose. Amazon wattage rows of 90 W, 125 W or one AAAA cell do not compare with the PST at 500 W or 530 W. The cut is on how to use a Bosch jigsaw.

Common questions

Is a cordless Bosch jigsaw as powerful as the PST?
Bosch says the brushless GST 18V-125 motor is at the same performance level as corded tools. That is the maker's claim about the motor. It still needs the right battery. The PST 700 E is 500 W from the plug, listed to 70 mm.
Why is an 18 V body a similar price and still not ready to cut?
Because the price is the body. The EasySaw at £57.99 is one T 144 D blade and a carton. The PST 700 E at £44.99 includes the means to run it. The UniversalSaw item type says without battery while another field says Battery, so you cannot treat that clash as a free pack.
Can I use my green Bosch batteries on a blue GST?
No. Green 18 V and blue Professional 18 V are different systems in Bosch's ranges. A green pack does not power a GST 18V-95 or a GST 18V-125, and a blue pack does not power an EasySaw or an AdvancedSaw. The GST 12V-70 takes neither.
What if I only own 12 V packs?
The GST 12V-70 at £106.99 is the body in this set that matches them. The item type still says 10.8 V, which is the older name for that family. It is bare, listed to 70 mm in wood, and review titles say this version has no variable trigger. An 18 V pack will not fit it.
Does cordless mean less dust and less vibration?
No. Cordless changes the power source. Dust still needs the blower, a nozzle or a vacuum, and HSE still wants wood dust captured at work rather than swept. Declared vibration on these pages runs from 4.1 m/s² in wood on the bow-handle GST to 10.0 m/s² on the PST 700 E bullets. Those numbers are not a daily exposure.
When is the lead the better buy?
When you have no battery that fits, and the cut is near a socket. The PST 700 E at £44.99 or the PST 800 PEL at £59.00 is then the whole price. The lead is the worse buy when you are in a loft or a garden with no sensible extension, and a matching pack is already charged.
