Trotec convector frost protection

Updated: October 2026

You are leaving a spare room, a garage or a holiday home empty, and a Trotec listing says frost. Trotec convector frost protection, on these four amazon.co.uk pages, is a word without a temperature. It does not tell you the air will stay above freezing, and it does not replace what you do to the water. The [Trotec convector comparison](/hub/portable-heaters/trotec-convector) holds the model fields. This page is the empty-building case. The Products Compared editorial team checked the listings, the manuals and the public UK notes on 16 October 2026. We did not test a setpoint in a cold house.

What the frost line actually says

Each of the four listings carries a frost claim, and none of them prints a degree. The TCH 1 E description says the heater suits small unheated rooms so water pipes do not freeze. The Trotec UK shop mentions a frost protection function on that model. Still no temperature. The TCH 18 E listing says frost control is claimed, with no degree. The TCH 23 E says frost-protection use is claimed, with no degree. The TCH 25 E names frost in the title, with no degree. A frost word on a product page is not a frost stat. Other brands sometimes print 5 °C. That figure is theirs. It is not printed on these Trotec listings, and this page will not borrow it. If a seller message or a review mentions 5 °C, that is still not the manual's setpoint unless the manual states it. The manuals we used say these heaters are only suitable for well insulated spaces or occasional use. That sentence limits where they belong. It does not state a frost temperature, and it does not say the heater was designed to be left in an empty house. A mechanical dial rarely shows degrees on cheaper convectors. Which? makes that point about dials in general, not as a Trotec score.

A small heater is a back-up

The TCH 1 E is the model the shop pairs with a small unheated room. It prints 450 W and up to 10 m² or 25 m³. On amazon.co.uk the heat field says 450 W and the description says 520 W, so even the small output is not agreed. At about 450 W it is a back-up for a small, insulated space you can check, not cover for every pipe in a house. A loft tank, a long unheated run under a floor, or a stone cottage with several outside walls is outside that 10 m² line. The shop's 10 m² figure is a claim, in the same way the TCH 18 E's 24 m² or 60 m³ line is a claim, not a measurement. The 2,000 W models do not become whole-home frost cover because the number is larger. The TCH 18 E, TCH 23 E and TCH 25 E can put more heat into one room. They still have no stated frost degree. They still do not watch the coldest pipe, which may be in a different room from the heater. A garage named in the TCH 25 E recommended-uses field is not an outdoor rating and not an unattended rating. The TCH 18 E manual forbids outdoor use. IP20 and IPX0 give no useful weather protection.

Empty house, garage and leaving it on

An empty house should have the water isolated and drained before you trust a heater with the pipes. That is the practical step from Water Regs UK guidance. The specific page URL returned 404 on 16 October 2026, so this article does not reconstruct a regulation or invent a protection temperature from it. If you are unsure how to isolate the stopcock and drain down, call a plumber rather than guessing with a heater left on low. Drain-down comes before any sentence about leaving the dial on. Electrical Safety First says not to leave a portable heater unattended while it is in use or while you are asleep. Switch off when you leave unless the heater was designed for unattended use. These manuals are not quoted here as unattended frost stats. A frost word on the listing is not that design statement. A holiday home you will not see for a fortnight is the case where drain-down matters more than the dial, because nobody is there to notice a cut-out, a tripped plug, or a heater that has been knocked over. A garage is not the garden. Do not put a TCH outside, in a porch open to rain, or beside a bath or shower.

A watched back-up is the narrow case

The narrow case that remains is a room you can check. You are in the building, or you are close enough to look, the space is small and insulated, the water is already isolated or you accept that the heater is not the protection for the pipes, and you have confirmed a UK plug using the Trotec convector buying guide. Cost shows the limit without proving the air stays above freezing. At Ofgem's average Direct Debit rate of 26.32 pence per kilowatt-hour from 1 October to 31 December 2026, for England, Scotland and Wales, full power is about 11.8 pence an hour at 450 W and 52.64 pence an hour at 2,000 W. A thermostat cuts on-time. Northern Ireland is outside this cap. Those pence are a bill, not a promise that a pipe in another room stayed above zero. If the cable is damaged, stop. If the overheat cut-out trips again after a cool-down, stop and get a competent person.

Common questions

Does a Trotec TCH hold the room at 5 °C?
These listings do not say that. None of the four prints a frost temperature. A 5 °C figure from another brand does not transfer to a Trotec TCH. The TCH 1 E text talks about small unheated rooms so pipes do not freeze, and it still gives no degree. A mechanical dial will not show a setpoint the manual has not stated. Do not set the knob and assume the room is held at 5 °C.
Which model actually states a frost temperature?
None of them, in the listings and manuals used here. The TCH 1 E, TCH 18 E, TCH 23 E and TCH 25 E all carry a frost claim or a frost word, and none prints a degree. The shop line for the TCH 1 E mentions a frost protection function and still does not add a temperature in the material we used. If a later listing prints a degree, that printed figure is the one to read, not a number borrowed from elsewhere.
Can the TCH 1 E protect a whole empty house?
No. The shop pairs it with up to 10 m² or 25 m³ at 450 W, and the amazon description also says 520 W. That is a small-room claim, not a house. A 2,000 W model heats one room harder and still has no stated frost degree. Pipes in another room are not watched by a heater on the landing. Isolate and drain the water before you go away. Treat any heater as a back-up you can check, not as the protection for the plumbing.
Should I leave it running while I am away?
Electrical Safety First says not to leave a portable heater unattended while it is in use or while you are asleep. Switch off when you leave unless the heater was designed for unattended use. These TCH pages are not quoted as that design. A frost word is not permission to leave the heater in an empty holiday home. Isolate and drain the water first. A fortnight away is the case where a cut-out or a failed plug would go unseen.
What should I do to the pipes first?
Isolate the water and drain down before you rely on a heater. That is the practical step. The Water Regs UK page cited for it returned 404 on 16 October 2026, so this is not a reconstructed legal text and it is not a temperature rule. If you cannot find the stopcock or you are unsure the system has drained, call a plumber. A convector left on low does not do that job for you.
Is a garage listing the same as an outdoor heater?
No. Garage appears in the TCH 25 E recommended-uses field. That field is not an IP rating and not a licence to use the heater in the rain. The TCH 18 E manual forbids outdoor use. IP20 and IPX0 do not give useful water protection. A closed, dry garage you can check is a different place from a driveway. Do not put the heater outside.
Will the thermostat stop it running all night?
A mechanical thermostat can cycle the element once the air at the heater reaches the dial position. Cheaper dials rarely show degrees, so you do not know that position as a temperature. Cycling is not the same as a stated frost setpoint, and it is not a reason to leave the heater unattended. At 2,000 W, full-power cost on the Ofgem cap used here is 52.64 pence an hour until the thermostat cuts the on-time. The bill is not proof the coldest pipe stayed above freezing.
When do I need a plumber or an electrician instead?
Call a plumber if you are unsure how to isolate and drain the water. Call an electrician if you need a fixed bathroom heater, if the cable is damaged, or if the overheat cut-out trips again after a cool-down with the clearances already correct. A portable TCH is not the product for a bathroom zone. IP20 and IPX0 are not those ratings, whatever the room-type field says.
