How to use a Rowenta fan heater

Updated: 21 October 2026

How to use a Rowenta fan heater, for one of the five models in this amazon.co.uk set, is a short sequence: a clear level surface, a wall socket, the lower power first, and a switch-off when you leave or sleep. The Products Compared editorial team did not run these heaters in a lab. The steps follow Electrical Safety First, the London Fire Brigade, GOV.UK’s winter note, and the listing notes dated 19 October 2026. Which model states a thermostat or a cut-out is on the [Rowenta fan heater comparison](/hub/portable-heaters/rowenta-fan-heater). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Put it down before you plug it in

Stand it on a flat floor, grille clear, about one metre from bedding, curtains and furniture. A tip-over switch is not stated on any of these five. The SO9266 title says automatic shutdown and the SO9265 states overheat protection. The others do not state a cut-out. The checks before you buy are on the Rowenta fan heater buying guide.

Wall socket only

Plug it into a wall socket. Electrical Safety First’s advice is no extension lead. A 2,400 W setting is about 10 A. Regulation 35 of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 expects a BS 1363 plug and a BS 1362 fuse. None of these five states the plug standard. If the plug is not a UK 3-pin plug, do not force it with a travel adaptor. GOV.UK’s winter note says unplug when you go out or go to bed. None of the five attribute tables states a timer.

Start on the lower power

Begin on the lower step, then use the boost for a short warm-up. The SO9266 prints 1000 W and 2000 W. The Vectissimo prints 1200 W and 2400 W. The tower prints 1000 W, 1400 W and 2400 W. Eco is a lower step, not a discount on the unit rate. At Ofgem’s 26.32 p/kWh for 1 October to 31 December 2026, 2.4 kW is about 63 pence an hour while the element is on. The cap does not apply in Northern Ireland or on a fixed tariff.

When it stops by itself

Switching off and on can be the thermostat doing what you asked. If it stays dead, with no heat and a warning light, stop. On the SO2330, reviews describe a red LED and no heat after months of use. A new element can smell on first use, and that smell should fade. A burning smell that continues is a fault. Unplug it.

When you stop and get help

Unplug and do not open the case if the lead is nicked, the plug is warm, or the consumer unit trips again. Another attempt on an extension lead is not the fix. A damaged lead is a repair-centre job, or a return if the heater is new. None of these five states an IP rating. The zone rules, and the Aqua model which is not in this set, are on the Rowenta fan heater bathroom page.

Common questions

Where do I put it?
On a level surface, about one metre from bedding, curtains and furniture, with nothing on the grille. Electrical Safety First and the London Fire Brigade both use that clearance. Let it cool before you move it or wind the cable. A tip-over switch is not stated on these five listings, so a stable spot is part of the setup.
Can I plug it into an extension lead?
No. Electrical Safety First advises a wall socket for a portable heater. A 2,400 W setting is about 10 A. A coiled extension reel is the wrong place for that load. If the only socket is in another room, move the heater. Do not run a lead from the hall into a bathroom.
Which setting should I start on?
The lower printed step: 1000 W on the SO9266, 1200 W on the Vectissimo, or the minimum on the tower. Use 2000 W or 2400 W for a short warm-up, then drop back. The Instant Comfort family manual describes silence around 1200 W and high at 2400 W. At 26.32 p/kWh the boost is about 63 pence an hour while the element is on.
Why does it smell?
A new element can smell for the first uses. The Instant Comfort Compact instructions say so, and SO9265 reviews say the smell fades over the first days. A smell that becomes burning, or a unit that smokes, is a fault. Unplug it. Do not keep it running to burn the smell off.
Why did it switch itself off?
On a model with a thermostat, cycling off at the set temperature is the control working. The minis print a band, 10–21°C or 10.5–21°C. If it stays off, shows a warning light and gives no heat, treat it as a fault. SO2330 reviews include that pattern after months of use. Do not bypass a cut-out.
Can I leave it on overnight?
No. GOV.UK’s winter note says unplug when you go to bed or go out. A thermostat, an eco mode or a frost setting is not an overnight permit. None of these five states a timer on the attribute table. Switch it off and unplug it.
What if the lead is damaged or the breaker trips?
Unplug and stop. A damaged lead goes to an approved repair centre, or back to the retailer if the heater is new. A consumer unit that trips again needs an electrician, not another socket. Do not open the case or replace an internal fuse yourself.
