Best heater for under a desk

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are cold at a desk, and the rest of the house does not need to be warm. The best heater for under a desk, in this set, is a small cabled fan heater aimed at your feet, with the grille in open air and the plug in a wall socket you can reach. It is not a 3 kW box for one chair, and it is not a plug-in heater on a skirting socket. The wider table is our [mini fan heater comparison](/hub/portable-heaters/mini-fan-heater). Listings were read on 19 October 2026. These heaters were not tested under a desk. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What under-desk heat actually is

The job is one person, from the knees down. Five hundred watts can take the chill off the air beside you. It will not lift a room the way a 2 kW fan does. At Ofgem’s Direct Debit average of 26.32p per kWh, 500 W is about 13p an hour if the element stays on. Two kilowatts in a knee-hole is a lot of heat in a small volume of air. The Pro Breeze states 900 W, 1,300 W and 2,000 W, so try the low step first. The Dreo states 1,500 W. The Dimplex that states 3,000 W belongs in a cold garage, not under a chair. If you have not chosen the type, use the plug-in heater or 2 kW fan heater page first.

If the socket is on the skirting

The Russell Hobbs RHPH2001 is a 500 W plug-in with no lead, at about £25.99. Dunelm states 20 cm of clearance below the socket. Reviewers cite more than 30 cm from the floor, and many of the 6,510 reviews are returns from sockets that sat too low. A typical skirting socket fails both. Do not prop the heater on a book. The body is the plug. Buy a cabled heater instead. The Dimplex DEUF2N states a 1.8 m cable. The Dreo’s lead length is not stated, and a reviewer calls it short. Electrical Safety First says not to use an extension lead.

Cabled heaters that reviewers put by a desk

Choose the Dreo DR-HSH004, at about £62.71, if you want a remote. Reviewers use it under a desk. Skip it if fan noise on high will wreck a call. The Dimplex DEUF2N, at about £24.99, states that it can sit under the desk, with tip-over protection and a 1.8 m cable. The sample is 4.0 from 46 reviews. The Pro Breeze, at about £29.95, is the 900 W step. Some reviews say the heat does not switch off.

What still goes wrong under a desk

The grille still needs a metre from anything that can burn. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue uses that distance. A coat on the chair is the usual failure. A foot is not a metre. The Amazon Basics, the Dreo, the Pro Breeze and the Dimplex desk heater claim tip-over protection. The Warmlite WL44002 does not state a tilt switch, and UK reviews say there is none. If a claimed switch trips on a rug, move the heater. Do not defeat it. On a call, use the lower heat and put the heater on the floor. Switch it off when you leave the chair. The stop points are on the how to use a fan heater safely page.

Common questions

Is a 500 W plug-in heater enough under a desk?
It can be, for the air around your hands and feet, if the socket is high enough and you are not trying to warm the room. The listing claims up to 10 square metres. A cold kitchen with a draught will still feel cold a metre away. In that case a cabled heater on a lower setting does the job the plug-in heater cannot.
My sockets are at the skirting. What then?
Measure before you buy the Russell Hobbs. Dunelm wants 20 cm of clearance below the socket. Reviewers talk about more than 30 cm from the floor. A skirting socket usually fails. Use a cabled fan heater in the wall socket. The Dimplex desk model states a 1.8 m lead. Do not raise a plug-in heater on a box.
Can I push it against the modesty panel?
No. The grille needs open air, and Hertfordshire’s metre applies to a panel as well as to curtains. Pushing the heater back until it is out of the way of your feet blocks the inlet or the outlet. Sit it where you can see a clear gap around the case. If your feet then kick it, choose a model with a stated tip-over switch and keep the floor flat.
Which of these has a tip-over switch for a kicked heater?
The Amazon Basics, the Dreo, the Pro Breeze and the Dimplex DEUF2N all claim tip-over protection. The Warmlite WL44002 does not state a tilt switch, and reviews say there is none. A claim is not our test. It is still the line to read if the chair rolls into the heater. If the switch cuts out on a rug, move the heater rather than weighting the base.
Will it be too loud on a call?
It may be, on the high setting, close to the microphone. Dreo reviewers mention fan noise on high and quieter use on a lower setting. No listing here gives a lab decibel number. Put the heater on the floor, use the lower heat, and do not muffle it with a cloth. Switch it off when you leave the desk. A 12-hour timer does not make an empty room a reason to keep it running.
