How to use a 2000W fan heater

Updated: October 2026

It is easy to treat a 2 kW fan as if it were a radiator you can leave. How to use a fan heater safely starts with where it stands, which socket it uses, and when you unplug it. A fan heater blows air over a hot element. It is not a panel that stays warm after you switch it off. The ten listings are on the [2000W fan heater comparison](/hub/portable-heaters/2000w-fan-heater). Peter F. used Electrical Safety First, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue, and Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue, plus the review notes on hot plugs. This is not a lab test. Put it on a clear floor

Stand it on a level floor, not on a chair, a bed, or a pile of clothes. Electrical Safety First and the fire services ask for about one metre from curtains, furniture and bedding. If you can touch the grille and the bedding in the same reach, it is too close. Keep the inlet and the outlet clear. Do not dry washing on it, and do not hang a towel over the top. Do not move it while it is running. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue say to switch off before you pick it up. A tip-over line, where a listing even prints one, is not a reason to slide the heater across the carpet with the fan still on. Once the chill is off, use the lower setting if the page prints one near 1000 W.

One plug, one socket

Put the UK 3-pin plug straight into the wall. Electrical Safety First says not to use an extension lead, and not to leave a cable coiled on a reel under this load. One heater per socket. A kettle, a toaster or a second heater on the same outlet is already another heavy draw. Scottish Fire and Rescue places heaters in the 13 A fuse column. Follow the plate if it differs. One Russell Hobbs review in this set says the fitted fuse is 10 A and that the plug and socket got hot. The hot plug is the problem. If the only comfortable spot needs a reel across the room, move the heater closer to the socket or leave it off. Status reviews describe a 13 A plug that melted at the fuse or tripped an RCD. Abode reviews describe hot pins. Warmlite WL44001 reviews say the cable near the plug becomes very hot on high.

Not a bathroom heater

None of these ten files states an IP rating. Do not call any of them bathroom-safe. DAHTEC bullets name bathrooms anyway. That line, without an IP rating, is not permission to stand the yellow steel heater beside a bath. Electrical Safety First says a normal socket is not allowed within 2.5 m of bathroom zone 1, the area around the bath or shower. Do not bring a mains heater in on an extension lead to dodge that distance. A 2025 home note from the same charity says not to bring a portable heater into a bathroom at all. A question on an amazon.co.uk page is not a yes. Heat in a bathroom is a fixed appliance on a proper circuit, which is an electrician’s job.

When you unplug it

Unplug it when you leave the room and when you go to bed. Electrical Safety First advises against overnight use. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue says the same: off when you leave or sleep. A thermostat that cycles, even on the Midea where reviews say it does, is not an overnight permit. Switch off, let the fan stop, then take the plug out. Do not tidy the lead by wrapping it around a hot case. Stop and call an electrician if the plug is hot, burnt or buzzing, if you smell scorched plastic, or if an RCD trips. Do not open the case. Recall model codes BB-FH200 and CX-QNQ-20-10 are not in this folder. Check the plate on the unit you own against any current recall.

Common questions

How far from curtains should a fan heater stand?
About one metre from curtains, furniture and bedding. Electrical Safety First, Devon and Somerset, and Hertfordshire all use that gap. If the curtain can blow onto the grille, move the heater, not the curtain hem. The same gap applies whether the listing says wire, ceramic or Radiant. A tip-over switch, where it is printed, does not shrink the metre.
Can I dry washing near it?
No. Do not put clothes, towels or bedding on the heater, and do not use it as a drying rack a hand’s width away. The air is hot and the grille blocks easily. Fire-service advice treats fabrics on a portable heater as a reason the fire starts, not as a handy extra. Dry washing somewhere else.
Can I use an extension reel?
No. Use the wall socket. A coiled reel under a 2 kW load is the lead the safety pages tell you to avoid. If the socket is too far, move the heater. One heater per outlet. A second heavy appliance on that socket is already too much, even with a 13 A fuse in the column Scottish Fire and Rescue uses for heaters.
Should I leave it on overnight?
No. Unplug it when you go to bed. Electrical Safety First advises against overnight use, and Hertfordshire says switch it off when you sleep. A timer on the Midea, or a dial that sometimes cycles, is not a substitute for being out of the room with the plug removed. The lower setting is for when you are still there and the chill is already off.
Can I use one of these in a bathroom?
No. None of these files states an IP rating. DAHTEC bullets name bathrooms, and that still is not an IP rating. A normal 13 A socket is not allowed within 2.5 m of bathroom zone 1. Do not run an extension lead in from the landing. A bathroom heater that is allowed to be there is a fixed installation, which means an electrician.
What do I do if the plug is hot?
Switch off, unplug if you can do that safely, and do not use it again until an electrician has looked at the plug and the socket. Reviews in this set describe melted plug plastic, hot pins and RCDs that trip. Do not open the case. A hot plug is the end of the session, not a running-in smell you wait out.
Should I move it while it is running?
No. Switch it off first. Devon and Somerset say not to move a heater while it is on. A spring-loaded tip switch on a model that has one can cut power if you lift it, and it can also fail to, which Status reviews show. Either way, you move it cold. Check the plate if you are worried about a recall code. BB-FH200 and CX-QNQ-20-10 are not among these ten files.
