Yakitori grill indoors

Updated: 16.10.2026

The listing in your basket says indoor, or it mentions a balcony, and you want to know if a smaller charcoal box is the exception. A yakitori grill indoors is still a charcoal barbecue. UK fire guidance keeps that fuel out of the house, off the balcony, and out of a tent, including after the flames die. Models and prices stay on the [yakitori grill comparison](/hub/portable-grills/yakitori-grill). The Products Compared editorial team checked the eight cards on 16 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. If you still cook outdoors, the lighting sequence is [how to use a yakitori grill](/hub/portable-grills/yakitori-grill/sub/yakitori-grill-how-to-use).

What the listings claim

Five cards use indoor or balcony language, and the same files often say outdoor in another field. Tissting, at £72.99, puts Indoor in recommended uses, while the usage field says Outdoor. Amusingtao, at £29.99, has a bullet that mentions indoor cooking. HAOHIZE, at £35.99, includes Indoor in recommended uses. Yardwe, at £40.99, puts indoor hibachi in the title. Topiky, at £106.36, names balconies in a bullet. GiantexUK, the onlyfire, and the MG-168 are charcoal too. A title is a sales line, not a risk assessment. Grate and weight for a garden cook are on the yakitori grill buying guide. Ceramic and cast iron fail the same room test, which the konro vs hibachi page separates for the shop and not for the kitchen.

The outdoor rule

GOV.UK says never to use a barbecue indoors, in a tent, under an awning, or in a caravan. The rule is about the fuel, so it covers every body in this set. The London Fire Brigade says no balcony barbecues and not on decking. Charcoal keeps producing carbon monoxide after the fire looks out. Do not bring a cooling charcoal grill inside. An open window does not turn a kitchen into the open air. The Camping and Caravanning Club forbids a barbecue inside a tent, awning, or caravan, including while it cools. If the fire spreads, call 999. If anyone is unwell after charcoal in an enclosed space, get emergency help.

Size and fuel are not an exception

A smaller grill makes a smaller fire. It does not make a fire that is safe in a room. The Amusingtao’s grate is 24 × 12.5 cm and 300 cm². That is a portion limit. HAOHIZE at 1.73 kg and Yardwe at 1.61 kg are easier to carry into a kitchen, which is why the indoor wording is tempting. Binchotan is still charcoal. Ceramic and cast iron change how the heat sits in the body. They do not change the gas the coals give off. If the flat has no open ground that the guidance allows, you do not light this set at all.

Gardens and smoke control

A smoke control area is not a ban on a garden barbecue. GOV.UK’s smoke-control rules restrict what you burn in a chimney. Outdoor barbecues are allowed. In England the page sets a penalty of up to £300 for smoke from a chimney that breaks the rules. Neighbour nuisance is a separate problem. Keep the grill in the open, away from decking, and put cold ash on bare soil rather than in a wheelie bin. A Caravan and Motorhome Club pitch can forbid barbecues. When they are allowed, raise them off the grass. Do not carry the grill under an awning to finish the coals because a shower started. A listing that says indoor has not found a gap in the rule.

Common questions

Can I use it in the kitchen if the window is open?
No. GOV.UK says never to use a barbecue indoors. An open window is still a room, and charcoal produces carbon monoxide while it burns and while it cools. If someone feels unwell after charcoal has been in an enclosed space, get emergency help.
Is a balcony different from indoors?
London Fire Brigade barbecue advice says no balcony barbecues and not on decking. Topiky’s balcony bullet, and Yardwe’s indoor title, do not alter that. Cooling on the balcony is the same problem as cooking on it.
Does a smaller grill make less carbon monoxide?
The Amusingtao is only 24 × 12.5 cm. The guidance does not offer a size below which indoor use becomes acceptable. A lighter box, 1.61 kg or 1.73 kg, is easier to carry into a room. That is a reason to be stricter, not a clearance.
Is binchotan safe inside?
No. UK konro sellers recommend binchotan for a cleaner burn. Cleaner is a comparison between fuels in the open. Binchotan is still charcoal. Light it only where a barbecue is allowed, and leave it there until it is cold.
What about a smoke control area in the garden?
Outdoor barbecues are allowed under GOV.UK smoke-control rules. Those rules are about chimney smoke. In England the stated penalty for a chimney offence is up to £300. A garden hibachi is not a chimney. The balcony ban comes from the fire brigade.
Can I carry it into the tent to cool?
No. The Camping and Caravanning Club forbids barbecues in a tent, awning, caravan, or motorhome, and the ban includes the cooling period. Leave it in the open until the coals are cold, then empty ash on bare soil, not into a wheelie bin.
Which listings in this set say indoor or balcony?
Tissting, Amusingtao, and HAOHIZE put indoor in a recommended use or a bullet, often beside an outdoor usage field. Yardwe’s title says indoor hibachi. Topiky’s bullet names balconies. Those are five stored cards. A quiet listing is not an indoor licence.
