Konro vs hibachi

Updated: 16.10.2026

You have seen both names on amazon.co.uk and on a UK cookshop site. Konro vs hibachi is a material question and a shape question. A konro, in the shops that specialise in them, is a narrow insulated body for skewers. A hibachi, in the Western listings in this set, is a metal firebox. The full price table stays on the [yakitori grill comparison](/hub/portable-grills/yakitori-grill). The eight stored listings were compared with UK shop descriptions on 16 October 2026. The Wasabi Company describes a konro as diatomaceous earth, narrow, for skewers over binchotan. In that shop’s wording, hibachi is the looser Western label. Flamery treats a konro as an insulated rectangle and a hibachi as a metal fire bowl. Flamery sells a konro, so use the split and do not import their ranking. Serious Eats treats konro, shichirin, and yakitori grill as one diatomaceous-earth object. That is a US use of the words, not a UK shop. An earth or ceramic body in a narrow bed is the konro side. A cast-iron, iron-alloy, aluminium, or stainless box is the hibachi side, even when the title says yakitori or Japanese. Where this set fills in an origin line, it says China. The MG-168 origin field is empty.

What you can buy in this set

None of the eight listings says diatomaceous earth. The closest outline is the onlyfire, at £134.99, ceramic clay, 10.5 kg. UK reviews report a bowl that cracked after one use. The bullet says two bottom vents, and one UK review found one slider. The Wasabi 31 cm set at £299 remains a different shop. GiantexUK at £69.99 is cast iron at 9.5 kg. Yardwe at £40.99 is iron alloy at 1.61 kg. The MG-168 at £334.91 is stainless, and skewer bars are not included. Its stored review texts are labelled United States. The set cannot sell you a named diatomite konro under these ASINs.

When to pick which

Choose the onlyfire if you want the narrow ceramic look and you accept the crack reports. You are buying ceramic clay at £134.99, not the £299 earth set. Choose cast iron when you want a UK-reviewed air door and a stated grate. The GiantexUK is 4.4 from 42 UK-labelled reviews, 32 × 22 cm and 704 cm², and 9.5 kg. The best yakitori grill page explains why that listing is the top pick, and why the Yardwe is the best value if you check the mesh. Yardwe at 1.61 kg is the carry. If you want the earth konro the specialist page describes, leave this ASIN set.

What the name will not change

Charcoal stays outdoors whichever word is on the box. GOV.UK and the London Fire Brigade do not allow that in a house, a tent, a caravan, or on a balcony, including while the coals cool. The full constraint is on yakitori grill indoors. Binchotan is still charcoal. The MG-168 includes a grate and states that skewer bars are not included. The onlyfire does not state a cooking area, so a konro-shaped photo is not a skewer count. Smoke control areas restrict chimney smoke, with a penalty up to £300. They do not ban an outdoor barbecue.

Common questions

Is a hibachi a konro?
Serious Eats treats konro, shichirin, and yakitori grill as one earth stove. The Wasabi Company and Flamery keep an insulated konro apart from a Western metal hibachi. In this set the metal boxes are hibachi-style fireboxes. None of the eight says diatomaceous earth.
What is the body of a traditional konro made of?
UK specialist pages describe diatomaceous earth, a narrow bed, and binchotan. The Wasabi Company sells a 31 cm set at £299. Ceramic clay on the onlyfire is a different material line. Cast iron, iron alloy, aluminium, and stainless are the hibachi side of this folder.
Which listing in this set is closest to that shape?
The onlyfire ceramic tabletop, at £134.99 and 10.5 kg. The material line says ceramic, not diatomaceous earth. UK reviews include a cracked bowl after one use. The £299 Wasabi earth set is not an ASIN here.
When is cast iron the better buy?
When you want a stated grate, a listed air control, and UK-labelled reviews, and you can lift about 9.5 kg. The GiantexUK at £69.99 is 4.4 from 42, with a sliding air door and no lid. The onlyfire is the alternative when the insulated shape matters more than the air door.
Does Japanese on the title mean made in Japan?
No. Origin lines in this set that are filled in say China. The MG-168 leaves origin blank. Japanese on an amazon title does not prove a diatomaceous-earth konro.
Where do skewer bars fit?
Across the top of a narrow grill, which is how konro shops describe sticks over the coals. In this set the MG-168 states that skewer bars are not included. The GiantexUK includes a grate, a lifter, and a hook, not a set of restaurant bars.
What should I buy if I only have these amazon.co.uk listings?
If you want the specialist earth konro, none of these eight is that grill. The GiantexUK is the metal top pick, at £69.99. The Yardwe at £40.99 is the best value if you check the mesh. The fire stays outdoors.
