OptiGrill vs SuperGrill

Updated: 16 October 2026

You are down to two Tefal names and the basket still shows both. OptiGrill vs SuperGrill is a fork between a sensor grill that shows a doneness colour and a manual grill whose plate opens flat. The [Tefal tabletop grill comparison](/hub/portable-grills/tefal-tabletop-grill) lists the other six rows, including the plancha and the EasyGrill, which stay out of this verdict. The Products Compared editorial team compared the amazon.co.uk files for the OptiGrill+ XL and the SuperGrill 3-in-1 XL on 16 October 2026, plus Tefal’s shop pages and two UK reviews of the machines. No lab cook was run. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two machines under one brand

An OptiGrill senses thickness, runs named programmes, and steps a light from rare toward well-done. The SuperGrill 3-in-1 XL is a dial with three temperatures and three positions: closed contact, a 180° barbecue opening, and a raised oven. Tefal’s comparator never puts a SuperGrill in the table. On file the XL is £129.99 with 4.7 from 2,766 reviews, and the SuperGrill is £114.99 with 4.4 from 146 UK reviews. The XL area field says 800 cm² and about 650 cm². The SuperGrill shop page says 800 cm² closed and 1,600 cm² open. The plancha and the EasyGrill stay on the buying guide.

Steak and weeknight meat

For a repeat steak, the OptiGrill is the clearer buy, if you still watch the colour. Nine programmes and a thickness sensor are on the XL bullets. UK reviews praise the steak and also say the cord is short. The sensor fails its start if the lid was not opened fully. That step is on the how to use page. The SuperGrill can cook a steak on the dial you set. There is no beep. Choose the OptiGrill when the household wants the same cue. Choose the SuperGrill when someone will stand there.

A larger open plate

The SuperGrill’s advantage is the open plate. The shop page says 800 cm² closed and 1,600 cm² at 180°. Good Housekeeping wrote “up to 800 cm² when opened flat”, which clashes with the shop. The body is 37.8 x 43.7 x 17.5 cm. UK reviews like the opening and describe a lid that sits to one side, a plate that would not clip, and one early failure. The OptiGrill+ XL does not open into a flat plate. The shop price beside “6–8 people” was £224.99, not the £129.99 in the file.

Which one, on what condition

Buy the OptiGrill+ XL when you want a doneness cue for repeat cuts and you will wash the ridges. Buy the SuperGrill when you want the plate open and you will watch the food. On the prices in the file, the XL is £129.99 and the SuperGrill is £114.99, so the sensor costs about £15 more in this snapshot, not the gap when the Tefal shop showed the XL at £224.99. Where those two sit in the full set of eight is on the best Tefal tabletop grill page. If you need both a sensor and a flat open plate, neither listing is that product.

Common questions

When is an OptiGrill the better buy?
An OptiGrill is the better buy when you want a thickness sensor and a colour from rare to well-done. In this folder the OptiGrill+ XL is £129.99 with 4.7 from 2,766 reviews and nine programmes. You still choose the colour. It is the worse buy if you need the plate to lie open.
When is the SuperGrill the better buy?
The SuperGrill 3-in-1 XL is the better buy when you want closed contact, a 180° open plate, or the raised oven, and you will time the food. The file price is £114.99, with 4.4 from 146 UK reviews. It has no doneness beep. If the hinge notes worry you more than the missing sensor, take the OptiGrill.
Does the SuperGrill open fully flat?
The shop page says it opens to 180°, with 1,600 cm² stated open and 800 cm² closed. Good Housekeeping wrote “up to 800 cm² when opened flat”, so the open area is not agreed. If it will not hold 180° on the worktop, that is a return.
Which one is better for steak?
The OptiGrill+ XL is the better steak grill if you want colour steps and you will look at them. Yellow is rare and red is well-done on Tefal’s FAQ. The SuperGrill sears on the dial, with no cue for when to stop. For a crowd, the shop states 1,600 cm² on the open SuperGrill, if the hinge holds.
Why is the shop XL dearer than the amazon.co.uk XL?
The Tefal shop page for the OptiGrill+ XL showed £224.99. The amazon.co.uk file shows £129.99. The SuperGrill was £114.99 on both. This fork uses the file prices. Read the live basket, because a price can move after 16 October 2026.
Can I get OptiGrill programmes on the SuperGrill?
The SuperGrill is three positions and three temperatures. It does not run nine or twelve OptiGrill programmes, and it has no rare-to-well-done light. Waiting for a beep will burn the food. The Elite’s 12 programmes are not a setting you can add to the SuperGrill.
What is the one condition on the recommendation?
Choose the OptiGrill+ XL if you want a doneness cue and you will clean the ridges. Choose the SuperGrill if you want the plate open and you will watch the food. The file prices are £129.99 and £114.99. A hinge that will not hold removes the SuperGrill’s advantage.
