Lotus grill on a balcony

Updated: 16.10.2026

You live in a flat, the listing says low smoke, and a bullet has already put balcony next to camping and a boat. A Lotus grill balcony search usually asks whether “smokeless” is permission. It is a claim about a fan and a closed canister. Fire England and the London Fire Brigade still say not to barbecue on a balcony, indoors, or in a tent. The nine listings, from £129.00 to £250.00, are on the [Lotus grill comparison](/hub/portable-grills/lotus-grill). We did not light a grill on a balcony. What the listing means by smokeless

The bullets describe fat missing the coals, a fan or a bellows, and an outer shell. The maker’s FAQ still says fatty food can puff, so the plume is smaller than an open tray on that account, and it is not zero. Classic United Kingdom reviews praise little smoke. A United Kingdom review of the anthracite XL says it was not smokeless. Motor Boat & Yachting found a standard grill struggled in wind, which is a cooking limit, not a balcony clearance. The indoor/outdoor field says Outdoor. Neighbours can still smell a fatty puff.

A balcony is not cleared by a fan

Fire England says never indoors, in a tent, or on a balcony. The London Fire Brigade says not to barbecue on a balcony, because flames and embers spread, and it warns on carbon monoxide from ashes. Neither page excepts a low-smoke brand. The sources here do not show one statute that bans every balcony, so this page does not call it a general criminal offence. The fire-service advice still says do not light one. An S at 3 kg and an XL at 6.5 kg are the same fire on the same deck. If someone is overcome by fumes, that is the emergency in carbon monoxide and a camping stove.

Indoors, tents and caravans

The England leaflet of 25 May 2022 says never indoors, in a tent, under an awning or in a caravan, and it says cool the barbecue before you move it. Tangerine and deep-blue S listings say Innenbereich, and anthracite S says Indoor, while the indoor/outdoor field says Outdoor. Those are sales fields. The United Kingdom review that used an XL indoors and got heavy smoke is what the clash looks like in a room. A double wall the bullets say never gets hot is a handling claim. Lighting, once you have a garden table, is on how to use a Lotus grill.

A garden table is a different place

GOV.UK allows outdoor barbecues in a smoke control area. Chimney smoke is the restricted part. In England the page states up to £300 for chimney smoke and up to £1,000 for unauthorised fuel. Drifting smoke can still be a nuisance. A garden table, where charcoal is allowed, is what these grills are built for. Bradford’s moorland order bans barbecues on the mapped moor until 30 June 2028. The leaflet’s 5 cm bed is for an open barbecue. On a LotusGrill the measure is the canister: 120 g, up to 250 g, or about 400 g. If the balcony is your only spot, do not light this grill there, and do not light a folding tray there either.

Common questions

Is a Lotus grill smokeless?
The bullets say low smoke or smokeless because fat is meant to miss the coals and a fan feeds the canister. The maker’s FAQ still says fatty food can puff. Classic United Kingdom reviews praise little smoke. A United Kingdom review of the anthracite XL says it was not smokeless, and one that used that XL indoors reported a lot of smoke. A German review of the XL starter, not marked United Kingdom, reported strong smoke on a balcony with the brand’s paste. Read “smokeless” beside those reviews.
Can you use a Lotus grill on a balcony in the UK?
Fire England says never on a balcony. The London Fire Brigade says not to, because flames and embers spread. A fan and a low-smoke bullet are not an exception. This research does not call that a general criminal offence. Leases are often stricter, and a silent lease still leaves the fire-service advice. A German review of the XL starter reported strong balcony smoke with the brand’s charcoal and paste.
Can you use a Lotus grill indoors?
The England leaflet of 25 May 2022 says never indoors, in a tent, under an awning or in a caravan. Tangerine and deep-blue S listings say Innenbereich in recommended uses, and anthracite S says Indoor, while the indoor/outdoor field says Outdoor. A United Kingdom review of the XL used it inside and reported heavy smoke. That review describes the risk. It is not a method.
Does a smoke control area ban a garden barbecue?
GOV.UK allows outdoor barbecues in a smoke control area. Chimney smoke is the restricted part. In England the stated penalties are up to £300 for chimney smoke and up to £1,000 for unauthorised fuel in a non-approved appliance. Drifting garden smoke can still be a nuisance. Fire England’s balcony line is a different rule. Bradford’s mapped moor is a further ban until 30 June 2028.
What if the lease says nothing about barbecues?
A silent lease is not a yes from the fire service. Fire England and the London Fire Brigade still say not to barbecue on a balcony, and the Brigade points to flames, embers and carbon monoxide from ashes. Many leases ban it in their own words, which is a contract point. Neighbours can still smell fatty smoke, which the maker’s FAQ already allows as a puff. A garden table is the setting these listings are built for.
Is a boat the same rule as a balcony?
The S titles mention a boat beside campers and hikers. That is a product sentence. Fire England’s balcony line is about balconies, and the indoor, tent and caravan bans are their own list. Motor Boat & Yachting found a standard grill struggled in wind, which is a cooking limit, not permission for a block balcony. A cabin is the indoor case the leaflet already bars.
