How to paint a swimming pool

Updated: 16.10.2026

You have chosen the tin, the concrete shell is empty, and a dry weekend looks long enough. How to paint a swimming pool is mostly the days you are not rolling. Touch-dry is not cured, and Titan’s 7 or 8 days must not be copied onto another tin. This page is the sequence for a watertight concrete bowl. The [swimming pool paint comparison](/hub/pool-care/swimming-pool-paint) holds the five prices. The Products Compared editorial team used SPATA, HSE guidance, and the waits on the captured listings. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before you pull the plug

An empty pool is a pit. Groundwater can push the shell once the water that was balancing it has gone. Technical Paint Services tell you to check the water table and the hydrostatic relief valve before you empty. If the valve is missing, seized, or the ground is charged, do not drain against that pressure. Paint will not put the structure back. Confirm the bowl is concrete and already holds water. SPATA are plain that paint cannot ensure water tightness, so a weeping crack or a leaking skimmer has to be repaired first. New render needs at least 28 days in their factsheet. TA Paints say at least three months for new concrete on their own products. Do not average the two. Liner and fibreglass questions belong on paint for a concrete swimming pool. If the water test fails, stop.

Clean, dry, and identify the old film

Prep takes longer than the painting. Technical Paint Services describe a jet-wash, an acid wash in small sections, then two even coats, at about 10°C or warmer, and a refill in one go after their cure. That routine is theirs. Use the etch your coating maker names. On old render, tap the wall. A hollow sound means loose render. Sandblasting, which SPATA call the ideal prep, is a contractor’s job in most gardens. Coo-Var want moisture below 7% before their coating. Your tin may forbid thinning. Rubber, acrylic, and epoxy do not swap. Families are set out on chlorinated rubber or epoxy pool paint.

Coats, then the wait that belongs to your tin

Roll or brush two thin coats rather than one heavy one. Titan’s bullets say brush or roller, dry in 30–60 minutes, recoat after 18–24 hours, and fill after 7 or 8 days. EPODEX’s cure field reads 6 hours. Mollor prints no fill wait. Quimicamp and CTX have no method in the capture. Coo-Var’s guide uses 14 days. TA Paints say their rubber fills after 7 days. Those clocks stay with those products. If your tin says nothing, do not borrow a neighbour’s number. Fill in one go when the cure on your label is finished. A coat that feels dry by evening can still be unfit for water.

Vapour, rain, and when to stop

Solvent vapour collects in a bowl. HSE’s INDG273 treats a pit or tank as a place you ventilate, and you do not enter a space still full of vapour. HSE prefer a brush or roller to spraying high-solvent paint, and Coo-Var say not to spray theirs. A long spell on the floor of an unventilated bowl belongs to a contractor. Rain on a wet film is a reason to stop. Do not refill to protect a soft coat. Air below about 10°C, the floor Technical Paint Services give, slows the cure. Nights near freezing are not days at 20°C. Call a professional when the shell leaks, the render sounds hollow, you cannot name the old paint, or the structure is GRP with blisters. Paint does not stop leaks.

Common questions

How do I know the old paint is rubber and not epoxy?
Colour will not tell you. SPATA point at a thinner rub as a maker’s hint for chlorinated rubber. Use the product that maker names. Do not rub petrol across the floor as a home test. If the film might be epoxy, or you do not know, stripping or a contractor is safer than overcoating. Switching families is a known failure.
Whose day count do I use before I refill?
Use the number on the tin you opened. Titan’s bullets say 7 or 8 days. Coo-Var say 14 for their paint. EPODEX’s listing field says 6 hours, and that cell is not a universal fill time. Quimicamp and CTX state no wait in this capture. A coat that feels dry in an hour can still be unfit for water.
Can I spray the paint?
Prefer a brush or a short-pile roller. HSE treat spraying as the higher-exposure method for high-solvent coatings, and Coo-Var tell you not to spray theirs. Titan specifies brush or roller. A mist in an empty pool is hard to keep off your lungs and the far wall. Absent a data sheet that allows spray and names the protection, roll.
What if it rains during the cure?
Stop and read the tin. Rain on an uncured film can pit it or wash it thin. Do not refill to protect a soft coat. If the surface has cratered or turned milky, let it dry, prepare again, and recoat, which may mean more paint. Days spent under rain do not count as a cure at the maker’s stated temperature.
When do I stop and call a contractor?
Stop if the pool leaks, the render drums hollow, the old coating is unknown, or you face fibreglass with blisters. Stop if the work means hours in an unventilated bowl with solvent, which HSE treat as a pit hazard. Sandblasting, structural cracks, and a dead hydrostatic valve are the same handoff. Sound concrete and a printed fill wait are the conditions for doing the coats yourself.
