Paint for a concrete swimming pool

Updated: 16.10.2026

You have a blue hole in the garden and a tin that looks as if it would stick to anything. Paint for a concrete swimming pool is narrower than that. SPATA keep immersion coatings on concrete-based shells, say they are unsuitable for liners, and say the film cannot ensure water tightness. A one-piece pool brings adhesion problems. This page is that eligibility test. Prices are on the [swimming pool paint comparison](/hub/pool-care/swimming-pool-paint). The Products Compared editorial team used SPATA’s factsheets and the substrates on the amazon.co.uk listings captured on 16 October 2026. There was no lab. Concrete is the shell this paint is for

A concrete or cement shell that has already held water is the surface these coatings are written for. The paint is colour and a wearing film. The structure is what keeps the water in. If the pool weeps at a crack, a pipe, or a skimmer, repair that path before you coat it. Groundwater behind the wall can still blister a careful film. New render and new screed need at least 28 days in the SPATA factsheet. TA Paints say new concrete should wait at least three months on their own range. Keep each figure on the source that printed it. After a water test, clean, name the old film, and wait out the tin. That order is on how to paint a swimming pool. Hollow render, found by a tap, will not hold the film.

Liners, including above-ground pools

If a vinyl sheet holds the water, you have a liner pool, and a paint tin is the wrong product. SPATA’s pool-types note says the PVC membrane is the waterproofing. Quoted liner life is often 10 to 12 years, and it varies with sunlight, chemistry, and fitting. A tired liner is replaced, patched by someone who does that work, or left alone. Above-ground pools sit in the same rule. SPATA’s finishes sheet treats them as liner pools, often with a thinner sheet. The frame does not turn that sheet into cement. If you can pinch a membrane off the wall, look at liner repair or a new sheet.

Fibreglass and one-piece shells

A one-piece fibreglass pool is a moulded shell, not a rendered tank. SPATA say these pools have adhesion problems, and that epoxy is the more likely route if fibreglass is painted at all, after a specialist has been asked. That is not a promise that any shop epoxy will stick, and it is not a reason to put ordinary acrylic on gelcoat. None of the five listings here is labelled as a two-pack epoxy for GRP. Technical Paint Services exclude GRP, glass fibre, Marbelite, and plastic liners from their acrylic. They say GRP with osmotic blisters is not paintable. Mollor’s surface field says concrete. Review text in that file mentions fibreglass. Follow the field. Titan’s bullets say cement or concrete and do not claim fibreglass.

Which kept listings name concrete

Three listings place themselves on cement or concrete, and two do not. Titan, about £51.15 for 4 litres, states cement or concrete. Mollor, about £89.99, has a surface recommendation of concrete. EPODEX, about £84.75 for 2 kg, states concrete basins and saltwater, as a 2K polyurethane. That is still a concrete product in this capture. It is not a GRP licence. Quimicamp at about £49 and CTX-141 Branca at about £80.25 do not state a substrate. A chlorinated-rubber word, or the words pool paint, does not prove cement, liner, or fibreglass. Leave both until a sheet names the shell. Old concrete that already carries a film has a second test: stay in the same family, set out on chlorinated rubber or epoxy pool paint.

Common questions

Will paint fix a leak?
No. SPATA say paint cannot ensure water tightness. A crack, a failed pipe, or a leaking fitting has to be repaired first. Coating over a weep traps water behind the film and is a common route to blisters. After the repair, test the shell again, then paint if the surface is sound, dry concrete.
Can I paint a vinyl liner, including an above-ground pool?
No. The membrane is the waterproofing, in the ground or above it. SPATA treat above-ground pools as liner pools. Paint for cement does not replace a tired sheet, and a thin above-ground liner is still a liner. Faded blue is a liner problem. A patch or a new membrane is the refresh.
What about a one-piece fibreglass pool?
Treat it as a specialist job, and often as a job you do not paint. SPATA cite adhesion problems and describe epoxy, after a specialist is consulted, as the more likely route. That wording is not a success guarantee. Blistered GRP is called unpaintable by Technical Paint Services. Do not use a concrete acrylic as a shortcut.
How long does new render have to cure?
SPATA say at least 28 days for new render and screed. TA Paints say at least three months for new concrete on their blog. Use the source that matches your material and your coating maker. Do not average those two waits into a six-week guess. Green render fails even a sound concrete product.
Who paints it if the render sounds hollow?
A contractor, after the loose render is removed and made good. SPATA’s tap test exists because hollow render will not hold a film. Painting over the drum wastes the tin and leaves flakes in the water. The same handoff applies to leaks, unknown shells, and blistered fibreglass.
