How to use a robotic pool cleaner

Updated: 21 October 2026

The first cycle usually fails for a dull reason: a damp charge port, no pole on the deck, or a basket tipped back into the water you just cleaned. How to use a robotic pool cleaner, for these eight battery robots on amazon.co.uk, is a short routine. Charge it dry, put it in, stay out of the water, lift it without swimming, and empty it on the side. Charge times and retrieval lines are from the listings on 19 October 2026. This is not a lab test. The rows are on the [pool robot comparison](/hub/pool-care/pool-robot). If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Charge it dry, back from the water

Charge on the adaptor from the box, port dry, charger back from the water, on a 30 mA RCD. Electrical Safety First treats that trip as personal protection outdoors. BS 7671 section 702 makes the water zone 0. These listings do not say you may swim beside the machine. POOLPURE bullets say 2.5–3 hours. Bestway bullets say 2.5–4.5 hours. The U8-2026 states 4.5 hours. The WYBOT states 3 hours. The U8-UK3 and B0DP6JFJPV do not state a charge time. A full bar is not a second runtime. If the WYBOT title says cordless and the power field says ac, do not invent a step. A hot pack is a stop.

Sink it and leave the water

Put the robot in once people are out of the pool. Assembly is required on the Bestway, which claims quick-click buckles, and not required on several other rows. One UK review says the white POOLPURE filter orientation is not obvious, so check the basket before it goes under. Switching off out of the water is not a promise the robot will park at the side. Watch from the deck. A POOLPURE reverse every 30 seconds is not a climb. If it meets a heavy wrinkle those bullets already exclude, take it out. Stated runs are 30, 100, 120, 150 and 180 minutes depending on the row. Three Bestway uses in a day, which one UK review describes, are three charges.

Get it out and empty it

Have a pole on the deck before you start. Bestway reviews often finish in the middle, and one says the hook came without a pole. POOLPURE claims a park at 5%, and UK reviews still describe a cut-out in open water. The U8-UK3 does not state a retrieval method. Wet weight is not stated. Let it drain before you open the basket. Do not tip that water back into the pool. Empty on the side. If the pole cannot reach the middle, do not swim out.

When it is a fault, not a technique

A wheel off, a button that needs many hard presses, or a half-minute run with the battery still full is a return, not a technique. Shaking it helped one reviewer only briefly. A Bestway pack that dies within a month is a fault. Finishing in the middle is a different problem. Missing Bluetooth on the U8-2026, or a WYBOT that stops after about a year with support declined because the purchase was on Amazon, is not cured by another cycle. Keep the order number. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a short-term right to reject, generally 30 days. After that the route is repair or replacement. If the floor was the wrong match, the robotic pool cleaner buying guide is the next page.

Common questions

Do I charge it before the first swim session?
Charge it before you expect a clean, and keep people out of the water for the run. Stated charges are 2.5–3 hours on the POOLPURE bullets, up to 4.5 hours on the Bestway, 4.5 hours on the U8-2026, and 3 hours on the WYBOT. The U8-UK3 and the AIPER row do not state a charge time. These listings do not say it is safe to share the water with the robot, so a swim and a cleaning cycle are not the same slot.
How do I get it out if it stops in the middle?
Use a pole from the deck. Bestway reviews often end in the middle, and one says the hook came without a pole. POOLPURE claims a park at 5% battery, and UK reviews still describe a mid-pool cut-out. The U8-2026 claims a hook and auto-edge docking. The U8-UK3 does not state a retrieval method. Do not make swimming out the method. Wet weight is not stated, so the lift is at least the dry weight and heavier with a full basket.
How do I empty it without dumping dirt back?
Lift it, let it drain at the surface, and empty the basket on the side. A Bestway UK review says tipping the water back into the pool brings the dirt with it. Rinse the mesh there, then leave the port uncovered and facing away from the pool. The printed baskets are 1.5 litres on the Bestway and 6 litres on the EVERCROSS rows. Other volumes are not stated.
What do I do if it runs for half a minute and dies?
Stop and use the returns route. UK reviews on the POOLPURE rows describe a half-minute run with the battery still full, a 20-second cut-out, and a wheel off. Shaking it is not a repair. If this is inside the first 30 days and the robot is not doing the job the listing described, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 short-term right to reject is the path to read. Do not keep charging a hot or swollen pack.
How many charges does a 30-minute robot need in a day?
Each Bestway run is a stated 30 minutes, then a charge of 2.5–4.5 hours in the bullets or 4.5 hours in the table. One UK review used it up to three times a day. That is three charges, not three back-to-back cycles. A pool that needs two passes is an afternoon.
