How to connect a pool hose

Updated: 21 October 2026

The hose is already in the box, the pool is up, and the usual failures are an air-filled vacuum hose or a push-fit cuff with nothing holding it. How to connect a pool hose depends on which end you have. A clamp joint, a threaded Intex nut, and a spiral vacuum hose are three different fittings. This page is the sequence. Which hose to buy is on the [pool hose buying guide](/hub/pool-care/pool-hose/sub/pool-hose-buying-guide) and on the [pool hose comparison](/hub/pool-care/pool-hose). There was no lab test. Push-fit hose and a clip

Most short pairs are push-fit. Seat the cuff fully on the tail, then tighten a clamp over the cuff, not over bare plastic beyond it. QilaoBanboss, Qicveqic, Uryxery, and Ousinby claim four clamps. The 10 m lay-flat hoses include two clips that tighten by hand. Bestway 58369's contents line is one 3 m, 32 mm hose and no clip. One UK review wanted a clip, so you need one you already own before you start the pump. Automated Environmental Systems says push-fit tails need hose clips. If the cuff creeps off, check whether a clip was ever there. A cuff that fits the pool and misses the pump is often the wrong bore. One Bestway review was on at the pool and not on at the pump. Do not heat the hose to stretch it. If only one end starts, stop and measure both tails on 32 mm vs 38 mm pool hose.

A threaded Intex hose

Intex 29060 is not a push-fit spare. It states a 2 inch internal thread, 38 mm by 150 cm, at about £14.95. Offer the nut up square, turn it on by hand, and stop when it is seated. The listing states no torque. One UK review says the threads jumped when the nut was fully tightened. Driving it harder will not cut a new thread. Back it off and check for a cross-thread. The contents field does not list a clip. A UK review that added a clip on a Bestway setup is a different joint. If the nut will not start, do not assume every Intex pump is this thread. A 32 mm push-fit tail will not become a 2 inch thread because you persist.

Prime the vacuum hose

The Amazon Basics bullet is the only priming line here. Fill the hose with water and hold it underwater until it sinks. The swivel cuff is for a manual vacuum head, which is not in the box. If the open end rises into the air before it is on the suction port, you have lost the prime. Fit the head, feed the hose underwater from the head end until water leaves the open end, then connect that end without lifting it clear. Use the suction port you actually have, and keep the pump off until the open end is on it. Do not start suction on a hose that is still full of air. One UK reviewer found the cuff missed their Intex pumps and thought about reusing a cut Intex cuff. That is a report, not an instruction to make an adapter. Intex does not sell adapters for other manufacturers' sizes.

When fitting is not the problem

Some faults survive a careful joint. A UK review says the QilaoBanboss pipe works on a filter and then collapses under suction. A tighter clip does not keep a soft wall round. One Bestway review reported a split after about two months. Do not clamp a split shut. Stop if the port is cracked, the pump housing is damaged, or you are looking at the mains lead. A heat pump whose flow you do not know is the point to pause. A like-for-like swap on a sound tail is a domestic job. Forcing a 38 mm nut onto a 32 mm tail is not. A lay-flat fold that stops the flow belongs with the drain rules. If the bore is right and the hose still will not hold water or vacuum, replace it. Do not grade it in with heat, tape, or another turn on a jumped thread.

Common questions

How do I fill a vacuum hose before I connect it?
The Amazon Basics bullet says to fill the hose with water and hold it underwater until it sinks. Fit the head, feed from that end until water leaves the open end, and connect before you lift that end back into the air. Keep the pump off until the open end is on the suction port you actually have. A US skimmer plate is not assumed on a UK above-ground pool.
What if the Bestway box did not include a hose clip?
Bestway 58369's contents line is the hose only, and one UK review wanted a clip. Use a clip you already own, over the cuff, once the tail is fully home. Do not start the pump on a bare push-fit. If the cuff will not start on one end, the bore is wrong, and a tighter clip will not close that gap.
Do I tighten an Intex thread until it stops?
Turn the 29060 nut on by hand until it seats. The listing states a 2 inch internal thread and no torque. One UK review said the threads jumped when the nut was fully tightened. If that happens, back it off and check for a cross-thread. Forcing it does not cut a new thread, and the contents field does not include a clip.
The cuff fits the pool and not the pump. Is that a fitting fault?
Usually the two tails differ. One Bestway review fitted the pool side and missed the pump. Measure both ports before you pull harder, and do not heat the hose to stretch it. Heat can oval a polyethylene end and still leave the wrong diameter. If only one end starts, check 32 mm against 38 mm, and push-fit against a thread.
When should I stop forcing the joint?
Stop if the thread jumps, if one end will not start, if the wall has split, or if the pump housing or the mains lead is the damaged part. A like-for-like swap on a sound tail is a domestic job. A cracked vessel, a damaged supply, or a heat pump whose flow you do not know is the point to get a fitter. Tape is not a repair.
