Pool brush for a vinyl liner

Updated: 21.10.2026

The liner on an above-ground pool is a PVC sheet held by water, and a brush that is normal on concrete can nick it in one pass along the cove. A pool brush for a vinyl liner has to be a soft filament, usually nylon, on a frame with no sharp edge. Steel bristles and abrasive pads are the wrong tools even if you press lightly. The [pool brush comparison](/hub/pool-care/pool-brush) lists the heads. This page is the constraint, not a ranking and not a pole guide. Certikin's UK liner-care sheet and the amazon.co.uk bullets were read on 19 October 2026. None of these heads was lab-tested on PVC. A purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Why the liner changes the brush

Gunite and bare plaster can take a stainless algae brush. A vinyl liner cannot. A wire tip, a rough pad, or a square corner can cut the sheet. Inflatable pools are the same class of surface. Fibreglass sits with vinyl: nylon on the gel coat, steel kept for plaster. Certikin's sheet says not to use abrasive equipment, and that a brush must have no sharp edges or corners that could puncture the PVC. It does not name nylon and it does not review an amazon ASIN. Width and pole size come next, on the pool brush buying guide. They do not override the filament.

Nylon, rounded ends, no steel

US liner notes from Pool Warehouse, Terra Hills, and retailers repeating Pentair say nylon on vinyl and steel on plaster. Those pages are not UK law. They match Certikin, which is the UK sheet this comparison uses. Light pressure does not make steel acceptable. If a listing's bristles are unnamed, do not guess they are nylon because the photo is blue. The Intex curved head in this comparison does not state a filament. That is a gap, not a hidden nylon claim. Rounded ends matter on the cove and the steps. A moulding seam can still be sharp on a head whose bullet says round. How hard to press, once the head is the right kind, is on the how to brush a swimming pool page.

What these listings actually say

Several bullets claim liner care, and none is a test. POOLAZA says nylon and round edges suit any liner, including vinyl. Unipool says round edges and nylon are gentle on vinyl. Both Solkraes kits say soft or gentle bristles for vinyl. Aquatix says it will not damage the lining, and lists firmness as Hard without naming the plastic. Alyoen and MplehDa also print a no-scratch line. Intex's curved head and the OUWEWIN kit have no liner sentence and do not name a bristle. MplehDa's table says medium to firm nylon, a UK review says the bristles are too soft, and Spanish reviews in the same file call them rigid. A vinyl sentence is not by itself a top pick.

An aluminium back is not a steel bristle

Lalapool, Aquatix, Unipool, and MplehDa use an aluminium back or top with a plastic frame. Aluminium in the spine is not stainless wire. Certikin's test is the edge that touches the PVC, not the metal inside the moulding. A sharp end cap or a proud screw can cut a liner on an otherwise nylon head. Run a finger around the frame before it goes in the water. If a Unipool end cap arrives separate, as US reviews describe, fit it so the screw is not proud of the curve. A stainless listing outside this comparison can still say it will not damage the pool. That sentence contradicts Certikin. Steel stays off vinyl.

What else damages a liner while you clean

Dry chlorine left on the PVC bleaches it. Move granules only in the way the label allows. Abrasive pads and steel wool are the same mistake as a wire brush. Do not drain the pool to scrub a stain. Certikin says a liner pool should not be drained without advice, because the sheet can shrink. If you can see a split, stop and call a liner specialist. Water above 30°C, on the same sheet, is a reason for a cover, not for scouring. Fibreglass gets the same soft head. Gunite can take steel, and it is not what this page is for.

Common questions

Can I use a stainless brush if I press lightly?
No. Light pressure does not change a wire tip. Certikin forbids abrasive tools and sharp edges on PVC, and liner guides say the same about stainless brushes. One nick at the waterline is a leak. Keep steel for plaster or gunite, which are not this comparison.
Is an aluminium back safe on vinyl?
The back can be, because it is the spine, not the bristle. Lalapool and Aquatix are aluminium-backed heads with a plastic frame. You still check the ends, the screws, and the clip. A smooth nylon face with a sharp corner fails the liner test.
Which listings claim liner safety?
POOLAZA, Unipool, both Solkraes kits, Alyoen, MplehDa, and Aquatix print a liner or lining sentence. They are bullets, not a certificate. Intex and OUWEWIN print no liner sentence and do not name a bristle. The edge in your hand is the check.
Will nylon still scratch if the frame corner is sharp?
Yes. The filament can be soft and the frame can still cut, especially on the cove and on steps. That is why Certikin talks about edges and corners, not only about the word nylon. Rounded ends reduce the chance. They do not replace a look around the moulding.
What about fibreglass?
Use the same soft head. Trade notes put nylon on fibreglass and painted surfaces, and they keep stainless brushes for plaster. A steel brush that says it does not damage the pool on an amazon title is not evidence for a gel coat.
Should I drain the pool to scrub it?
Not as a first step. Brush what you can reach with the water in, and follow the chemical label for growth on the walls. Certikin says not to drain a liner pool without advice, because the sheet can shrink. Ask a specialist if you think the pool has to come empty.
A steel brush on Amazon says it will not damage the liner. Is that true?
Do not rely on that sentence. It conflicts with Certikin and with the usual split between nylon for vinyl and steel for plaster. A stainless head can rank on a best-seller list because people buy it, not because it is safe on PVC.
