Pool brush buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are choosing a first brush for an above-ground pool, or replacing a head that is already shedding, and the star rating is the only number that stands out. A pool brush buying guide for a UK garden pool puts the surface and the pole you already own ahead of that score. Width and firmness come next, then the price. The [pool brush comparison](/hub/pool-care/pool-brush) is the table of eleven amazon.co.uk listings, with shelf prices from those listings. This page is the order of the decisions. The Products Compared editorial team compared those listings on 19 October 2026. There is no lab test behind the order. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the pool surface

Vinyl and fibreglass are not a concrete shell you can scour. Certikin's liner-care sheet says not to use abrasive equipment, and that a brush head must have no sharp edges or corners that could puncture the PVC. Nylon on a rounded frame is the match. Stainless steel is a gunite or bare-plaster tool, and no steel head is in this comparison. The POOLAZA head at £10.52 states nylon and round edges. The Intex curved head at £8.99 states neither a bristle nor a liner claim. That silence is why the pool brush for a vinyl liner page comes before you treat a cheap curve as safe on PVC.

Then the pole you already own

Most heads arrive without a pole, even when the component line says Handle. Aquatix, POOLAZA, Lalapool, and MplehDa all do that. Trust the bullet that says the pole is extra. A common telescopic pole is 1.25 inch, about 31.8 mm. Unipool and MplehDa state a 1-1/4 inch clip. Intex's basic cleaning kit uses shaft 29054 at 26.2 mm. A UK review of the gohantee head measured about 2.8 cm, missed an Intex Basic pole, and suited the Deluxe. Part numbers are on the pool brush head or kit page. VEVOR's UK listing advertises a separate 1¼ inch connector at £13.90. These listings do not show it tried on these heads.

Width, ends, and how firm the bristles are

Heads here run from 40.6 cm to about 18 inches. That is a wall brush for an above-ground pool, and it is clumsy in a tight step corner. Rounded ends help on steps and the cove. The seller's curved sentence is still a claim. Certikin's test is whether you can feel a sharp corner. MplehDa's table says medium to firm nylon, a UK review calls the bristles too soft, and Spanish reviews in the same file call them rigid. Hard, on Aquatix and gohantee, means more scrub and more risk of marking a thin liner if you lean on the frame.

What the price bands on amazon.co.uk are telling you

Heavily reviewed heads here cost less than kits with a handful of reviews. Intex is £8.99 (4.4 from 2,472), POOLAZA is £10.52 (4.5 from 5,151), Lalapool is £13.68 (4.4 from 11,052), and Aquatix Pro is £14.95 (4.3 from 2,594). Kits sit higher, from a Solkraes at £19.99 (2.8 from 6) to Alyoen at £23.99 (4.0 from 2). A 4.8 from 15 reviews, the OUWEWIN kit at £17.98, is not stronger evidence than 4.4 from thousands. For POOLAZA, Unipool, and Lalapool, most written reviews in the files are from outside the UK. Who each listing is for is on the best pool brush page.

When the head is finished

Bristles in the pool, or a clip that drops the head, mean a new head. UK reviews of the Aquatix Pro describe bristles falling out after weeks or about a year. That is wear to budget for, not a clock every head follows. A pole that buckles on the first afternoon is different. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a 30-day short-term right to reject goods that are not of satisfactory quality. If the liner is split, stop and speak to a liner specialist before anyone drains the pool. Certikin says not to drain a liner pool without advice.

Common questions

Do I choose the bristle or the brand first?
Choose the surface, then the pole diameter, then the filament. On vinyl and fibreglass that means nylon or a similarly soft bristle and a frame without a sharp edge. A familiar brand on the wrong socket still will not fit. Steel is not in this comparison, and it is the wrong filament on PVC.
Is an 18 inch head too wide for an above-ground pool?
For a straight wall, 18 inches, or the 40.6 cm Intex head, is the width this comparison is built around. You will feel it on a narrow step, where a curved end helps. If the pole is short, reach matters more than width: you should not lean the frame onto the liner to gain the last few centimetres.
Why does the component line say Handle when the bullet says no pole?
Amazon often prints Handle for a head-only listing. On Aquatix, POOLAZA, Lalapool, and MplehDa the bullet still says the pole is not included. Trust the bullet. A UK reviewer of the MplehDa head said a handle was missing and kept the brush after a partial refund.
What is a 1.25 inch pole in millimetres?
About 31.8 mm. That is the size Unipool and MplehDa claim. It is not Intex's basic kit pole, listed at 26.2 mm (1-1/16 inch). A head made for the larger clip will not seat on the smaller tube, which is what the gohantee review described at about 2.8 cm.
When do shed bristles mean a new head?
When filaments are coming out into the water, or the clip no longer holds, replace the head. A year outdoors can be ordinary wear, and Aquatix UK reviews describe that. A head that arrives bent, or a pole that fails on day one, is a 30-day reject question rather than a reason to keep brushing.
Should I trust 4.8 stars from 15 reviews over 4.4 from thousands?
No. Fifteen reviews can sit at 4.8 because the failure has not been written yet. The OUWEWIN kit is that case. Intex, POOLAZA, and Lalapool are larger samples, and you still need to see whether the written texts are from the UK. Stars do not tell you the pole diameter.
Are stainless brushes in this buying guide?
They are not. This comparison is nylon and plastic-bristle heads, plus kits whose filament is sometimes unnamed. A stainless brush on a best-seller list is a plaster or gunite tool. Certikin's sheet rules out sharp, abrasive heads on PVC. Keep steel off a liner.
