Active oxygen vs chlorine pool

Updated: 21 October 2026

The children come out with red eyes, the shed smells of chlorine, and someone has suggested you switch the season to oxygen. Active oxygen vs chlorine pool care is a real trade, and it is not a free upgrade. Oxygen can be sold as odourless, and it does not leave the residual you can read all week. Chlorine is what UK shops still reach for when algae wins. Bayrol’s Soft & Easy page, PoolStore’s notes, and the amazon.co.uk review files were compared on 19 October 2026. There was no lab test. Packs are on the [active oxygen pool comparison](/hub/pool-care/active-oxygen-pool). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The three jobs, and which one oxygen is weak at

PoolStore splits sanitation into three jobs: killing bacteria, killing algae, and breaking down bather waste. Chlorine is sold to do all three. Persulphate, the oxidiser PoolStore names inside a system like Soft & Easy, is described as weaker on algae. The fix in that system is a quat in the other chamber of the pouch, not a hope that oxygen covers algae on its own. A non-chlorine shock is persulphate beside a chlorine or bromine residual. Soft & Easy is sold as the weekly treatment, with the algaecide in the sachet. Hydrogen peroxide, as on the AquaCare bottle, is another oxidiser, named with silver. Smell is why households start this search. It is not the same thing as algae control.

Smell, skin, and what the reviews actually say

Bayrol describes Soft & Easy water as odourless and gentle on skin, with no chlorine. The Amazon bullets repeat that. On the 4.48 kg file, texts from Germany, France, and Italy often praise the lack of a chlorine smell, and an Italian reviewer mentions a child who reacts to chlorine if the pH is watched. One UK reviewer with a 15 ft steel frame said one sachet a week kept the water clear. On AquaCare, which is entirely UK text, reviewers mention little smell, and one says bromine made their legs itch while this liquid did not. The same files carry the limit: oxygen gone in about an hour, then algae, milky water, and a return to chlorine. A kinder-skin comment is that person’s report, not proof the pool stays disinfected all day. Only three texts on the 4.48 kg file, and one on the 5.04 kg file, were written in the United Kingdom.

When chlorine comes back

Bayrol says a chlorine shock is still possible with Soft & Easy. PoolStore says keep unstabilised chlorine in reserve, because a green pool is not another oxygen pouch. That is one retailer’s experience, not a trial. This page will not give a mixing recipe. A consumer site suggests waiting 24–48 hours between oxygen and chlorine. That wait is not UK law and it is not Bayrol’s sentence. Follow the label you are holding. Public pools are a poor analogy. PWTAG and HSE HSG179 describe operator pools around chlorine. They do not publish a domestic oxygen residual. HSE product type 2 is the biocide category, not a certificate for one Amazon listing. Bayrol says to double the weekly pouch when it is hot or busy, because the oxidiser is short-lived. The weekly order, if you switch, is how to dose active oxygen.

Cost and who it fits

PoolStore says persulphate costs more by weight than chlorine. This page will not invent a chlorine basket. On the oxygen side the shelves run from £13.99 for 1 litre to £116.27 for tablets that still need partner products. One pouch a week is a rule of thumb, and heat can double it, so a box is not a priced summer. UK shops were about £67 to £75 for Soft & Easy when checked. That gap is between shops and Amazon, not a comparison with chlorine. This system fits a private pool around 20–30 m³ if you will test every week and keep a shock for the week the water turns. Chlorine fits better if you want a residual on ordinary strips, you travel, or algae already wins. A hot tub you let to guests is a different rule. East Renfrewshire says peroxide alone is not the residual they want for a let, and that sentence is about lets, not your paddling pool.

Common questions

Is it kinder on skin?
Reviewers say so, including a non-UK note about a child who reacts to chlorine, and a UK ice-bath review that preferred this liquid to bromine. The bullets say gentle on skin and no eye irritation. That is a comfort report, not a medical clearance. The pool still needs the pH and the oxygen test.
Will it stop algae?
It is the weak job. PoolStore says persulphate needs a second chemical against algae, which is why Soft & Easy puts a quat in the other chamber. Reviews still describe algae, milky water, and a return to chlorine, including after a double dose in one German report. Keep an unstabilised chlorine shock, as Bayrol and PoolStore both describe, and follow the label.
Do I still need chlorine in the shed?
Bayrol still allows a chlorine shock with Soft & Easy, and PoolStore suggests unstabilised chlorine for a green pool. You can run ordinary weeks on the pouch. You should keep a shock rather than throw the chlorine away on day one. Read the shock label before you combine them. A consumer waiting-time is not the manufacturer’s instruction.
Can I tip chlorine in on the same day?
Only if the label allows it. Bayrol says shock chlorination is possible with Soft & Easy. A consumer site says to wait a day or two. Do not mix chlorine tablets into a skimmer with oxidiser. If the water is green and you are unsure, a pool engineer is the safer call.
What about a hot tub I let to guests?
East Renfrewshire says peroxide alone is not enough for that kind of spa and wants chlorine or bromine. That line is about holiday lets, not a family frame pool. AquaCare’s title includes hot tubs, and UK reviews describe home tubs. A guest let needs the local expectation and a residual you can show.
