Nylon or stainless cable tie gun

Updated: October 2026

You pick up a 12 mm gun because the bag of ties says 12 mm, then the channel will not take the nylon you actually own, or the stainless coil will not feed a plastic pistol. The useful split is nylon or stainless cable tie gun as two families, not one width number. A steel tool is also not an 18th Edition certificate. The full table sits on the [cable tie pliers comparison](/hub/pliers/cable-tie-pliers). The Products Compared editorial team used the amazon.co.uk listings and the review notes already in this set, checked on 19 October 2026. Two families, not one 12 mm gun

Nylon and stainless need different tools unless the listing you are reading says otherwise. On1shelf, a UK fixings seller, treats them as separate families and tells you not to cross materials. In this amazon.co.uk set the nylon pistols are the Flytuo HS-519 at £10.99, whose bullets claim plastic ties from 2.4 mm to 9 mm, and the StarTech N10MM-CABLE-TIE-GUN at £32.16, printed for nylon 2.4–4.8 mm wide and up to 1.6 mm thick. The C.K T3970 at £26.99 is a short flush-cut plier for plastic ties, not a tension gun. The stainless lever guns are the Dechengbao CT03 and the QWORK models, printed for steel up to 12 mm wide and 0.3 mm thick. A UK note on the tool-only Dechengbao treats it as thin metal only. A 12 mm Amazon width is not a promise that the same jaw will take 12 mm nylon. Width detail after the family is chosen sits on the buying guide.

Thickness is the tell

Read the thickness before you trust the width. On the Dechengbao and QWORK guns in this set the printed window is 12 mm by 0.3 mm. That 0.3 mm figure is a thin stainless cable-tie strap, not a heavy banding strap. Trade stainless tools are often limited to about 7.9 mm. Amazon’s 12 mm claim is wider. It is still a 0.3 mm cable-tie thickness. The LuLobtg set at £19.49 claims a dual-slot jaw for stainless straps from 0.3 mm to 1.2 mm thick. There is no star rating and no review text, so the 1.2 mm range stays seller copy. If your strap is thicker than 0.3 mm, the retained 0.3 mm guns are the wrong family. Nylon thickness is a different number. StarTech prints up to 1.6 mm on plastic 2.4–4.8 mm wide. Flytuo’s bullets go to 9 mm width and the Amazon material line says Nylon.

Fire support is about the tie, not the gun

BS 7671 regulation 521.10.202 is about how the wiring is supported, not about which gun you squeezed. Wiring must not collapse in a fire, and non-metallic ties must not be the sole support when cables are clipped direct or hung under tray. Steel or copper ties are examples of a metal support. Plastic ties are not banned. They must not be the only thing holding the cable where that rule applies. A stainless gun does not make the installation 18th Edition compliant. BSI 62275 is a tie standard. It does not rate the gun. No retained listing in this set prints BS EN IEC 60900, so the cushion grips are comfort, not insulation. Who should skip which listing sits on the best cable tie gun page. The squeeze order stays on the how to use page.

The plastic-tie split on QWORK

The listing that blurs the two families is the QWORK CA5078, ASIN B095RZ6NPH, at £14.85, printed for 12 mm by 0.3 mm stainless and ladder ties. Across 499 amazon.co.uk reviews it sits at 4.4. The listing FAQ asks whether it will take plastic nylon ties and does not answer. One UK sample says it was used on both. Other UK notes say the channel is too narrow for regular plastic ties. That split is not a certificate that one gun does both materials. The QWORK kit and the Dechengbao kit do not confirm nylon either. Flytuo and StarTech are the nylon pistols. If you need both families, budget for two tools.

Common questions

Why do trade stainless tools stop at 7.9 mm when Amazon says 12 mm?
Trade stainless tools often print about 7.9 mm by 0.25–0.3 mm. The Amazon guns in this set print 12 mm by 0.3 mm. The wider width is still a 0.3 mm cable-tie thickness. It does not turn the jaw into a nylon 12 mm tool, and it does not make the gun a banding tool.
Does a stainless gun make the installation 18th Edition compliant?
No. Regulation 521.10.202 is about the support, so cables do not collapse in a fire. Steel or copper ties are examples. The gun is not the certificate. None of these listings is an 18th Edition approval, and 62275 rates the tie, not the tool.
Is LuLobtg a cable-tie gun or a banding tool?
The listing claims a dual-slot jaw for 0.3–1.2 mm stainless straps, which is a banding range the 0.3 mm guns do not print. There is no star line and no review text. Treat it as seller copy for a thicker band, not as a scored cable-tie gun in this set.
Did any UK review use QWORK on plastic ties?
Yes, one UK note on the CA5078 says it was used on both. Other UK notes say the channel is too narrow for regular plastic ties. The listing FAQ asks the question and does not answer it. That split is not a reason to buy one gun for both materials.
When must I use metal ties as the sole support?
Where 521.10.202 applies, non-metallic ties must not be the sole support when cables are clipped direct or hung under tray. Plastic ties are not banned. They must not be the only thing holding the cable in a fire. Choose the metal tie first, then a tool that will take it.
Are cushion grips insulated?
No. No retained listing in this set prints BS EN IEC 60900. TPR or rubber handles are comfort. They are not a live-work rating. Do not treat a cushion grip as insulation.
