Cable tie gun buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are at the bench with 4.8 mm nylon ties for a loft trunking tidy, or thin stainless ties for an exhaust wrap, and ordinary side cutters have already left a tail that snags. A cable tie gun buying guide is the order of the decision: match the material of the tie you already own, then the printed width and thickness, then the price. This page does not rank stars, and it does not walk through the squeeze. Those sit on the [cable tie pliers comparison](/hub/pliers/cable-tie-pliers). These amazon.co.uk listings were checked on 19 October 2026, not in a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the tie, not the brand

Nylon and stainless need different tools unless the listing you are reading says otherwise. On1shelf, a UK fixings seller, treats them as separate families. In this amazon.co.uk set the nylon pistols are the Flytuo HS-519 at £10.99, whose bullets claim plastic ties from 2.4 mm to 9 mm, and the StarTech gun at £32.16, printed for nylon 2.4–4.8 mm wide and up to 1.6 mm thick. The stainless lever guns are the Dechengbao CT03 and the QWORK models, printed for steel up to 12 mm wide and 0.3 mm thick. If you own both materials, you own two jobs. The split is set out on the nylon or stainless page.

Width and thickness on the listing

Read both numbers. A stainless bullet that says 12 mm is a width. On the Dechengbao CT03 and the QWORK guns the thickness beside it is 0.3 mm. That is a thin cable-tie strap, not a heavy banding band. UK trade stainless tools are often limited further, commonly to about 7.9 mm wide. A wider Amazon claim does not turn the same gun into a nylon tool. Everyday nylon guns cluster at 2.4–4.8 mm. StarTech prints that window and adds 1.6 mm thickness. Flytuo’s bullets go up to 9 mm. The LuLobtg set at £19.49 claims steel straps from 0.3 mm to 1.2 mm thick, with no star line, so the range stays seller copy. If the listing prints no width, as on the C.K T3970, do not invent one.

A dial is not a force

A numbered knob on a budget gun is a stop you can turn down, not a table of newtons. HellermannTyton’s EVO7 instructions, for that maker’s own tool, list settings 0 to 8 as about 20 N to 165 N. RS showed an EVO7i at £349.82 including VAT on 19 October 2026. BS EN IEC 62275 rates the tie. It does not rate the gun. StarTech is the retained nylon gun with a tension wheel, at £32.16, with 3.6 from 31 amazon.co.uk reviews. Only two of those texts are from the United Kingdom, and both want more pull than the dial gives. If the job needs a written tension and the gun publishes no scale, stop. The hand-off is on the how to use a cable tie gun page.

Kit, tool-only, and the shelf bands

Flytuo starts at £10.99. StarTech at £32.16 buys a named compact gun and a dial, not a larger tie. Stainless tool-only listings are the QWORK CA5078 at £14.85 and the Dechengbao CT03 at £17.99, with no ties in the box. Kits sit at £19.98 for the QWORK WD10734, printed 4.6 × 250 mm, and £27.99 for the Dechengbao kit, printed 4.6 × 270 mm. Buy the kit when that length is what you will fit, and buy the gun alone when you already have a coil. Who should skip each listing is on the best cable tie gun page.

Common questions

What width and thickness should be printed?
Look for both figures on the amazon.co.uk listing. Everyday nylon is often 2.4–4.8 mm wide. StarTech also prints up to 1.6 mm thick. Flytuo’s bullets claim up to 9 mm. The stainless guns here print 12 mm wide and 0.3 mm thick. A width with no thickness, or a thickness claim with no reviews, is not a measured jaw.
Is a tension dial the same as newtons?
No. A budget dial is a stop you can reduce. HellermannTyton’s EVO7 manual, for that tool only, maps settings 0–8 to about 20–165 N. BS EN IEC 62275 describes the tie, not the gun. Do not treat a knob as a calibrated force.
Should I buy a kit with 200 ties or the tool only?
Buy the kit when the printed ties are the size you will use. The QWORK WD10734 at £19.98 includes 200 stainless ties at 4.6 × 250 mm. The Dechengbao kit at £27.99 includes 200 at 4.6 × 270 mm. The tool-only Dechengbao CT03 at £17.99 and the QWORK CA5078 at £14.85 leave you to supply the coil. A heavy box is mostly the ties.
Why is StarTech dearer than Flytuo if both are nylon?
Flytuo is £10.99, 290 g, with bullets up to 9 mm and 4.3 from 31 reviews. StarTech is £32.16, 254 g, limited to 2.4–4.8 mm nylon and 1.6 mm thick, with a tension dial and 3.6 from 31 reviews. You pay for a named compact gun and a dial, not for a wider tie. The UK file on StarTech is two short notes.
Is a 12 mm stainless gun a 12 mm nylon gun?
No. On these Dechengbao and QWORK listings, 12 mm is the stainless width and 0.3 mm is the thickness. It is not a claim that the same jaw takes 12 mm nylon. Trade stainless tools are often closer to 7.9 mm wide. If you need a heavy nylon tie, that is a different pistol, and it is not one of these stainless guns.
When is an EVO-class tool the right buy instead?
When the job needs a published force, not a guess. The EVO7 instructions quote about 20–165 N on that maker’s nylon ties, and the RS shelf for an EVO7i was about £350 including VAT on 19 October 2026. None of the guns in this set print that scale. A £11 pistol is for an occasional nylon bundle you can judge by eye.
