Self-watering hanging basket

Updated: October 2026

You are choosing between an open liner you water most days and a plastic bowl with a reservoir, because a hot week on a UK patio dries a hanging basket before you are home. A reservoir stores water under the compost. It does not water the basket for you, and it is heavier when the well is full. This page is that one choice, using the Royal Horticultural Society's Wisley trial and the listings in our [hanging basket comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/hanging-basket). What self-watering means on the listing

A self-watering hanging basket has a lower well, so the compost can draw water after you fill it. An open liner does the opposite. Hanging Basket Co says the reservoir lengthens the gap and is not fit-and-forget. A full well adds weight. SQOKHT's fortnight is the seller's sentence, not what Wisley recorded. ADEPTNA's 26 cm plug holds water in the compost. There is no separate well. Tosnail's coco liners are made to drain.

What the Wisley trial actually measured

At RHS Wisley, self-watering baskets wasted under 7 per cent of the water applied and used about a third less water for similar flowers. About 3.4 litres sat in a basket of about 5 litres of compost. Across nine weeks, daily use sat between 142 ml and 380 ml. Those figures are the trial baskets, not the SQOKHT well. Top the well up in a heatwave.

Reservoir, plug and coco in this set

SQOKHT is the reservoir in this set. The 30.48 cm pair and the 25.4 cm trio are both about £9.99 and share 4.6 from 48, so do not add the count twice. UK texts mention a few hot days, tumbling tomatoes and winter pansies. One review says the base came off in wind and heavy rain. Check the clip over a path. The empty pair is 1.41 kg and the trio is 1.31 kg. Neither states a well capacity, so do not copy Wisley's 3.4 litres onto them. ADEPTNA's 26 cm bowl is the plug, and one bowl cracked before soil went in. Tosnail is the open coco cup. Dearer Aqua Lock and Easy Fill pairs are price checks, not ASINs scored here. Types in general are on the hanging basket buying guide.

When an open basket is still the better buy

An open liner is the better basket when you want flowers through the sides. SQOKHT's solid walls cannot do that. Fyne-Finds or Kingfisher are the open bowls if you can water them. The top 2-3 cm test still applies. Skip the reservoir in a wet winter, and skip it in a high wind if you cannot see the base staying clipped. A UK seller's rule of thumb, not a measurement of SQOKHT, is about 5-7 kg for a planted 30 cm basket. A full well can sit at the top of that range. Weight and drip are on the hanging basket balcony page. Lining is on how to plant a hanging basket.

A well, a plug, or an open liner

If you miss waterings and you can accept a plastic bowl, SQOKHT is the reservoir in this set, and the two-week line is still a listing claim. If the page only offers a plug, you are holding water in the compost, not in a separate well. If you want a ball of flowers through the sides and you can water most days, an open liner is the better buy.

Common questions

Are self-watering hanging baskets worth it?
They are worth it when you miss waterings and you can accept a heavier basket and a plastic look. Wisley found reservoirs wasted under 7 per cent of water and used about a third less for similar flowers. They are a poor buy for side planting, a winter basket that must not sit wet, or a fortnight away with no check. In this set that is the two SQOKHT packs, with a shared 4.6 from 48.
Do they still need water in a heatwave?
Yes. The well runs down. UK reviews talk about a few hot days, not a month. Wisley's daily use moved between about 142 ml and 380 ml on the trial baskets. The SQOKHT two-week sentence is a listing claim. In a hot spell, look at the compost and refill the compartment. An open liner in the same weather often needs a daily check of the top 2-3 cm.
Can I grow tumbling tomatoes in one?
UK reviews on the shared SQOKHT file say people have used the bowls for tumbling tomatoes. The 30.48 cm pair gives a wider rim than the 25.4 cm trio. Tomatoes still need feed and a well you refill. A 13 cm Tosnail cup is a shallow place for a tomato. ADEPTNA's 26 cm plug bowl has also been used for tomatoes, beside the cracked-bowl complaint. Keep the reservoir topped up in July.
Will a reservoir stop drip on a balcony?
It catches a lot of what would have run through an open liner. It does not mean the basket never overflows. Overfill the well, or leave it in a downpour, and water still leaves. One UK review lost the SQOKHT base in wind and rain. A plug left in the ADEPTNA bowl reduces drip another way, and it can waterlog the compost. Neither is a guarantee for the flat below.
Is a drainage plug the same as a reservoir?
No. ADEPTNA's plug sits in the base of the compost space. Close it and water stays around the roots. Open it and the bowl drains. A reservoir is a separate store under the compost, which is what SQOKHT lists. If the page says drainage plug and never mentions a water compartment, you are not buying a self-watering basket.
What does the two-week claim mean?
It means the SQOKHT bullets say the baskets can be left for about two weeks. Wisley did not time that ASIN for a fortnight. The trial measured lower waste on its own reservoir baskets, with daily volumes in the hundreds of millilitres. Weather, compost and the plants decide the gap. Treat the claim as marketing, and use the finger test as the schedule.
