Hanging basket for a balcony

Updated: October 2026

You have a railing, a neighbour underneath, and a wall you may not be allowed to drill. A hanging basket on a balcony fails when the fixing was sized for the empty grams on the listing, or when the liner drips onto the flat below. Planting steps are on [how to plant a hanging basket](/hub/plant-accessories/hanging-basket/sub/hanging-basket-how-to-plant). The bowls are in our [hanging basket comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/hanging-basket). Peter F., editor, 22 October 2026. Wet weight, not the listing grams

The number on the amazon.co.uk page is the empty product. Kingfisher's 14 inch bowl is listed at 580 g, Fyne-Finds' pair at 900 g, and SQOKHT's 30 cm pair at 1.41 kg. CKUO's 1 g is not a load. Water changes it. Hanging Basket Co uses a rule of thumb of about 5-7 kg for a planted 30 cm basket and more than 10 kg for 40 cm. That is bracket guidance, not a laboratory weight. A full reservoir sits at the heavy end. A bracket sold for a dry wreath is the wrong bracket.

Brick, timber, railing and a rented wall

Fix into brick or structural timber, not the mortar joint and not a fence panel. A railing can take a basket when the rail is yours to load and the hook is made for it. Adhesive hooks are the least trusted option. On a rented flat, ask before you drill. The building's load rating, if it has one, overrides a shopping guess. General product safety rules do not authorise a hole in a wall you do not own. That seller suggests 25-30 cm baskets for balconies. Kingfisher's 14 inch title is larger. Fyne-Finds and the SQOKHT 30 cm pair sit on the edge of that suggestion.

Drip, wind and the neighbour below

Open coir drips, and Tosnail is meant to drain. The extra fabric liner is not in the box. Pierced rattan on Fyne-Finds also lets water through. Water when the top 2-3 cm are dry, and stop before you rinse the basket for the sake of it. ADEPTNA's plug, left in, sends less water downstairs and can leave the compost sodden. SQOKHT's well can still overflow, and one UK review lost the base in wind and rain. A cotton holder is not the answer if you plant into it. The cone pair's chain was shorter than listed in one UK review, which matters at a balcony door. The reservoir in more detail is on the self-watering hanging basket page.

When to stop and ask

Stop if you do not have permission to drill, if the render is blowing, or if the hanging point is over a public pavement. Stop if the only plan is a 14 inch basket plus a full reservoir on a sticky hook. Section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 still gives you 30 days from the day after delivery to reject a cracked bowl or a missing hook. It does not insure the railing. If you have not chosen the type yet, start with the hanging basket buying guide.

Wet load, then the neighbour

If the listing weight is a few hundred grams, that is the empty basket, not the one you will hang after rain. If the rail or the wall is not yours, ask before you drill. If someone lives underneath, an open coco liner will drip, and a reservoir or a plug only slows that if you do not overfill it.

Common questions

How heavy is a planted hanging basket?
Treat about 5-7 kg as a UK seller's rule of thumb for a planted 30 cm basket, and more than 10 kg for 40 cm. Those figures are from Hanging Basket Co's fixing guide. They are not a weighing of these listings. The page grams are empty weights, from 180 g for a Dveezull pair up to 1.41 kg for a SQOKHT 30 cm pair. A full reservoir adds water on top of compost.
Can I hang one from a fence or a railing?
A fence panel is what UK bracket sellers tell you to avoid. A balcony railing can work when it is a real rail you may load, with a hook made for it. A glass-balustrade handrail is a question for the building. Adhesive hooks are the least trusted option in the same guidance. If the lease forbids drilling, a railing hook still needs permission when the rail is not yours to alter.
How do I stop drip on the neighbour?
Use a bowl that holds water, and water to the compost rather than to runoff. SQOKHT's reservoir is built to catch what an open liner would lose. ADEPTNA's plug, left in, slows drip and can waterlog the roots if you keep watering. Open coco, such as Tosnail, drains by design. The RHS would rather you water when the top 2-3 cm are dry. Re-wet a wilted basket in a bucket on the floor, then drain it.
Do I need the landlord's permission?
Ask before you drill a wall, soffit or railing that is not yours. Written consent is the useful kind in a block with a management company. The building's own load rating, if one exists, overrides a kilogram guess in a shopping guide. A pot that only sits on the floor is a different object, and it is not a hanging basket.
Is a 14 inch basket too big for a balcony?
It is larger than the 25-30 cm size a UK seller suggests for balconies. Kingfisher's 14 inch title can still work on a deep balcony with a bracket into sound masonry and room to clear the wall. On a narrow rail, a 30 cm Fyne-Finds bowl or a 25.4 cm SQOKHT is the easier fit. Measure the reach, including a chain that may be shorter than the photo.
Are adhesive hooks enough?
Treat them as the weakest option, below screws into brick or structural timber. A planted basket is several kilograms by the seller's rule of thumb, and wind adds a sideways pull. A hook rated for a light ornament is not that job. If you cannot drill, use an over-rail bracket the lease allows, or do not hang the basket.
